It's also from the novel as well, he was already researching the dark arts, the spells he cast upon himself + drinking blood + dying + rejected by god = vampire

I know Dracula is an old as hell and well respected piece of literature but its poor form on Hellsing's author to assume everybody had read the original book. A lot of the points it calls back to aren't commonly know parts of the Dracula lore unless you've read the actual book :/
