This has always felt like the biggest potential for a DBZ movie, showing what triggered Goku to reach Super Saiyan 2 and 3.

It wasn't even what stopped Buu. It was a massive Spirit Bomb. I guess it's why future power-ups are just recolors of the base Super Saiyan

That's how Toriyama rolls with character designs. Freeza, Cell, and Buu at their strongest and most dangerous actually got smaller and slimmer.

A scene much later in Super pretty much confirms it with Vegeta calling it a waste of a form. And Goku doesn't really use it anymore after this fight lol
