This plot point with Nui feels like it was something the writers threw into the show at a whim rather than teased and foreshadowed in advance.

Oh and here we go AGAIN where the main protagonist jobs and is taken over/used by the villians.

I believe specifically mentioned this before but that is a big part of it. Ryuko's character development basically goes in circles for a large part of the show and that's a problem. It's less the idea that's bad but rather the execution and I feel the execution here is pretty poor IMO.

Agreed, though I feel this situation is the most justified in context of the story, if I were to rewrite KLK I'd drop the other moments of her going into angst mode and have just had her build up to this scene for it to all crumble at once.
