Maybe if we were talking about the later parts of the series where GAINAX ran into massive time/budget problems, but the first episodes of Evangelion look great. They didn't even bother improving the quality of the character animation for the movie, which is pretty damn lazy.

Some of the CG and background art looks downright bad.
