“You want my treasure? You can have it! I left everything I gathered together in one place. Now you just have to find it!”
These were the last words of the legendary King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger, before he was executed. And as those words spread, so began “The Great Pirate Era.” Men flocked to the Grand Line in countless numbers, searching for Roger’s treasure: One Piece. Our story kicks off as Monkey D. Luffy sets off to live his dream. He seeks a formidable crew to aid him in his journey to obtain One Piece and become the new King of the Pirates.
One Piece is hugely popular in Japan, having single-handedly crushed manga sales for the past 10 years. But just how popular is it?
See for yourself! The series is written by Oda, who planned an epic narrative. The story grew and grew from there to the massive beast we see today, where nearly every detail matters, even if they seem inconsequential in the long run. The continuity in the series is crazy, so jumping in at the 207th episode can be a daunting task. But fear not! Toonami-GAF is here to help! This guide will introduce you to the characters, the details about the world, and catch you up on the plot so far.
Luffy sets sail with the intention of gathering a worthy, ten-member crew. To date he has six crewmates, all sailing by his side on their ship, the Going Merry. Each member has a unique personality, fighting style and goal.
The leader of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy set sail from the East Blue to become King of the Pirates. A natural leader, he’s brash and has a heart that’s almost always in the right place. Also quite gullible, he gets in over his head very easily, leaving the crew often at the mercy of his whims. He loves meat and ate the Devil Fruit which turned him into a rubber man: the Gum Gum Fruit. This means he’s immune to bullets, cannons, punches, and blunt objects. But he’s not invincible, either; vulnerabilities include fire, sharp objects, and, just like every Devil Fruit user, the sea. He’s surprisingly fast, which means his attacks tend to be unpredictable. He’ll stretch his fists and legs very quickly for offense and inflate his body to deflect bullets and cannon balls back at his opponents for defense. Luffy also tends to learn from fighting his opponents like Crocodile, who taught him that Devil Fruit abilities could be used in ways he hadn't even thought of. Luffy’s attacks consist of Gum Gum Pistol, Gum Gum Bazooka, Gum Gum Gatling, and many more.
Luffy cherishes the straw hat given to him by his hero and role model, Red-Haired Shanks, a pirate captain sailing the Grand Line. Many years ago, Shanks would often stop by Luffy’s island and soon took a shine to the boy. After accidentally eating the Gum Gum Fruit during a celebration, Shanks tried to get Luffy to spit it out. But to his dismay, the Devil Fruit had already taken effect. During a later incident, Shanks lost his arm rescuing young Luffy from a hungry Sea King. Before leaving again, he handed the boy his straw hat, on one condition: that it only be returned when Luffy became King of the Pirates.
The first pirate Luffy recruited was actually a pirate hunter. Despite this obvious problem, Luffy quickly earned Zoro’s respect and added him as the first member of the crew. Zoro wants to become known as the world’s greatest swordsman using his unusual three sword style: one sword in each hand and one in his teeth. If hard-pressed, he has fighting methods for fewer swords or even no swords at all. Despite his steely demeanor, he tends to get rather easily flustered by fellow crewmate and rival Sanji, who he’s always at odds with. Zoro loves booze and is often napping in many situations despite the fact he may be in real danger. He also has the worst sense of direction of anyone in the crew and is almost certain to get lost, making him one of the last people to show up for battle. Despite being human, Zoro is unbelievably strong and can survive seemingly mortal wounds and even electrocution. However, this nearly changed when he encountered the Pirate Warlord “Hawkeye” Mihawk. Wanting to test his skill, Zoro fought Mihawk and promptly lost. Standing in front of his opponent saying, “Scars on the back are a swordsman’s secret shame”, Hawkeye, respecting Zoro’s fighting spirit, nearly slashed him in half. This left a massive scar on his front chest and led to his vow to never lose again. Since then, Zoro has learned to even cut steel on his quest to become the greatest swordsman in the world.
This dream comes from his childhood friend, Kuina. Despite the fact that Zoro could beat every challenger on his home island, he could never win against his teacher’s daughter, not even after 2000 total matches. He decided to use two swords, thinking it would improve his chances of winning, but still he was defeated. Zoro then confessed to her that he wanted to be the world’s greatest swordsman, a dream the two of them both shared. However, Kuina’s father said she could never attain the goal since girls’ fighting potential diminishes as they get older. Zoro, angered by her defeatist attitude, said he would beat her through skill and not because she was a girl. They both promised each other that either one of them must become the world’s greatest swordsman. Kuina, sadly, suffered a fatal accident. Zoro was left with her family’s sword, the legendary sword Wado Ichimonji (from a set of legendary swords). Where once he fought with two swords, now he had three, and he resolved to become a swordsman so great that word of his skill would echo in the heavens, and reach the ears of Kuina’s soul.
A pathological liar, Usopp is the sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy naturally wanted him on the crew since his father, Yasopp, was one of Shank’s pirates. The two are best friends, and Usopp takes advantage of this by trying to influence Luffy’s behavior or just get him to goof off. Though cowardly and the first to run from danger, he’ll fight for what he believes in when everything is on the line; sometimes his running is to simply establish distance in order to snipe his opponents. He tends to employ strange gadgets like rotten eggs and fire “stars” as bullets. Usopp, when needed, will get up close for a finishing blow with his hammer (or his rubber band of doom). His compulsive lies tend to fool very few people, but he always manages to get Luffy and Chopper to believe him. He also seems to be one of the most inventive members of the crew, developing Nami’s Clima Takt baton and finding inventive uses for dials found in Skypiea. Usopp himself dreams of becoming a great pirate captain one day.
Usopp was left alone with his mother when Yasopp left to join Shanks’s crew. And when his mother became deathly ill, Usopp would run into the village yelling that pirates were coming in order to keep her hope that her husband would return alive, despite how much it scared and annoyed the villagers. After she died, Usopp’s lying habits continued, and he befriended a sickly girl named Kaya who he told of his “grand adventures” to keep her spirits up. Kaya, the heiress to her deceased parents’ huge fortune, was later targeted by pirates. Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Usopp thwarted their evil plans, which led to Kaya giving the Straw Hats a ship, the Going Merry, as a token of her gratitude. Usopp, in turn, cares for the ship deeply and repairs it despite having no experience for such a task.
Sanji has two great loves: food and women. When Luffy and his crew stopped at Baratie, a seagoing restaurant, they found an opportunity to recruit a cook. Little did they know they had set foot onto the ship of legendary pirate Red Foot Zeff. Sanji was Zeff’s apprentice and joined Luffy’s crew to fulfill his dream of finding the All Blue, a legendary sea when the North, South, West, and East seas meet, its waters filled with fish from each one of the seas. This is the ultimate dream for a sea chef and rumored to exist somewhere on the Grand Line. As a chef, Sanji must take care of his hands in order to prepare food, so he only fights with his legs. Despite Luffy’s constant demand for food, Sanji usually good care of the crew and gets high praise for his dishes he makes. He considers Zoro to be “lesser” than him, and as such the two are often engaged in a bitter rivalry. Completely infatuated with beautiful women, he is always at Nami and Robin’s beck and call. Nami gets particularly annoyed at this, such as when Sanji constantly calls out her name in a lovestruck tone of voice. No matter what, he will quickly run to a woman’s aid and gets angry when he believes anyone, even his crewmates, has wronged them in some way. Despite his blind chivalry Sanji tends to be one of the smarter Straw Hats, saving Luffy and the others several times from sticky situations. He also tends to think ahead to accomplish a goal, and, along with Luffy and Zoro, is one of the strongest fighters on the crew, often facing the most fearsome opponents.
Sanji learned at an early age the importance of food. When he was working as a young cook on a ship, Zeff’s crew attacked. A storm promptly sank both ships, and Zeff rescued Sanji from the sea. The two were then stranded on a deserted rock with only small rations to keep them alive. Zeff took the lion’s share of the food, rationalizing that, as a grown man, he needed more food to live. With his rations depleted and in danger of starving to death, Sanji saw that the pirate’s larger bag of rations was still completely full. Plotting to kill Zeff for his food, Sanji discovered the bag was filled not with food, but only with the now-worthless treasure Zeff had acquired. Zeff had given all the food to Sanji and instead opted to eat his own leg to survive (note: this is the manga story; in the anime, Zeff severed his own leg after it became stuck in order to rescue Sanji from the sea and simply went without any food). Zeff confessed he always had a lack a food on the high seas and wanted to open a restaurant, vowing to feed whoever was hungry. Sanji agreed to work for him, and the two were later rescued by a passing ship. Sanji swore never to deny food to a starving person and holds a zero-tolerance policy for wasting food on the seas. When Luffy offered him a chance to join his crew, Zeff told Sanji to pursue his dream of finding the All Blue.
Nami is a cat burglar who was introduced in the first episode and became the second person to travel with Luffy after Zoro but, due to certain circumstances, she’s technically the 4th Straw Hat to join the crew. While her mind may always be on making a quick buck, she has an uncanny talent for navigation. Due to the dangerous waters on the Grand Line, an ace navigator is invaluable, and Nami certainly fits the bill with her ability to predict weather patterns from miles away and deduce which currents are safe for travel through simple observation. She is short-tempered and often uses her womanly wiles as a weapon; if that doesn’t work she’ll hit her opponents in the back of the head with her baton. However, she’s aware of her weaknesses in combat and tends to run from confrontation. When Usopp invents her Clima Takt, she believed she finally had a viable method to fight back, only to discover the “weapon” was made mainly for parties. Initially upset, Nami soon finds out the weapon is actually perfect for her since she can use the weapon’s ability to mimic weather patterns for more offensive capabilities. Nami, together with Usopp, will often try to control Luffy’s wild behavior, and she is often annoyed by Sanji’s constant flirtation. She has proven to be an excellent thief and pickpocket, often stealing critical objects completely undetected. She joins Luffy’s crew in order to make a map of the world, and also serves to manage the crew’s money.
When Nami was a girl she was an orphan taken in by a former Marine named Bellemere. Together with another orphan named Nojiko, the three girls formed an unlikely family. But because Bellemere struggled to support two children with the meager wages of her job as a tangerine farmer, Nami resorted to learning navigation through stealing the books that would educate her. This led to a huge fight, where Nami said she wished she was adopted by a rich family. After slapping her child across the face, Bellemere attempted to make amends by spending a great deal of money to make a large dinner for Nami and Nojiko. However, at the same time, Arlong’s band of fishman pirates arrived and formed a dominion over the island, demanding payment from each person in exchange for their lives. Bellemere, her savings now depleted, could only afford to pay for Nami and Nojiko. Arlong made an example of Bellemere, shooting her dead before the eyes of the two little girls. Due to her skill at drawing highly detailed maps, Arlong kidnapped Nami and forced her to join his crew. The two struck a deal. In exchange for 100 million Berries (the name of the currency in the world of One Piece), Arlong would leave the village alone. Unsurprisingly, the fishman did not keep to his word. And although completely unaware of Nami’s servitude, Luffy brutally defeated Arlong for one very simple reason: he made Nami cry.
Chopper was a reindeer on Drum Island before he unknowingly ate the Human Human Devil Fruit, transforming him into a toddler-sized human/reindeer hybrid. Because of the nature of his shapeshifting powers he is often called a tanuki (a Japanese raccoon dog reputed to have similar powers) and gets very annoyed. Chopper was introduced after Nami came down with a deadly disease, leading the Straw Hats to search for a doctor. He shows vast knowledge in the medical field thanks to his mentor, Kureha, and is able to speak like a human thanks to the Devil Fruit. Chopper’s fighting style consists of ‘points’ which he gets by manipulating the wavelength of the Human Human Fruit, a feature all Zoan-type Devil Fruit eaters share. Chopper’s “standard”, toddler-like form is Brain Point, his reindeer form is Walk Point, and his muscular humanoid form is Heavy Point. If the situation demands, Chopper can then eat a Rumble Ball which amplifies his transformations for 3 minutes, allowing him to unlock Arm Point, Horn Point, Jump Point and Guard Point. Due to the modification of the Devil Fruit wavelength, only one Rumble Ball can be taken every 6 hours. Otherwise, Chopper’s transformations would become unstable and he would have no control over what he changes into. Chopper seems to be very shy, often hiding behind objects. However, this is an art he seems unable to master given he does it backwards; the half of his face that would normally be used to peak around corners is hidden, while the rest of him is entirely exposed. He also has a strange reaction to compliments. Whenever praised, Chopper will say harsh words, completely at odds with his clearly joyous reaction of smiling and performing a silly dance. As the youngest member of the crew, he has a naïve, almost childlike personality and is often swept up in Usopp’s grand lies as a result. Chopper enjoys goofing off with Luffy and seems to have the strongest rapport with Robin, though he gets very annoyed whenever the stubborn Zoro takes off the bandages used to treat his frequent injuries. Chopper dreams of becoming a doctor that can cure any illness.
Chopper was always an outcast among reindeer due to his blue nose, but when he ate the Human Human Devil Fruit he was exiled from the reindeer community entirely. He tried to join the humans in Heavy Point form but was regarded as a monster. Then, in a stroke of good fortune, Chopper ran into an eccentric old man named Dr. Hiruluk. Hiruluk gave his new friend a name: Tony Tony Chopper, and made him his assistant. Instantly, Chopper looked up to the old man as a role model. Hiruluk believed all diseases could be cured and saw the Jolly Roger as a symbol of vitality and strength. He sought to cure the “sickness” of Drum Island, which only allowed doctors sanctioned by its despot, Wapol, to practice from the confines of the castle (Hiruluk was considered an outlaw). Gradually, rumor spread that these doctors had fallen ill, and that no one on the island could be treated. Eventually Hiruluk, who had kept his sickness hidden, kicked Chopper out so the reindeer would not see him suffer. Determined to help the doctor, Chopper searched through Hiruluk’s books to find a medicine strong enough to cure him. Finding a very rare mushroom amongst the reindeer that had exiled him, Chopper broke his horn and leg in a fight with the other animals but managed to recover the mushroom and prepare medicine for Hiruluk. He hugged Chopper out of gratitude and stated he felt immediately better after consuming it. Hiruluk went to try and treat Wapol’s doctors, while Chopper paid a visit to another eccentric, outlaw doctor and close friend to Hiruluk, Dr. Kureha, who asked where the old man was. When Chopper informed her of the medication he found, labeled in the medical textbook with the skull symbol he had been told was a symbol of vitality, Kureha gravely informed Chopper that he had unknowingly given Hiruluk a fatal dose of poison; the old man had 12 hours left to live. Chopper ran off to save Hiruluk, who had discovered that the doctors weren’t sick at all upon arriving at Wapol’s castle. It was a trap to lure in the remaining outlaw doctors, which relieved Hiruluk; he was worried that Drum Island was in a state of national crisis. With his services no longer required and determined not to let Chopper be the reason for his death, Hiruluk committed suicide. Chopper was taken in by Kureha and taught real medicine. Luffy later defeated Wapol and freed the doctors, while Kureha fulfilled Hiruluk’s dream of showering cherry blossoms on the snow-filled Drum Island.
With a whopping bounty of 79 million Berries at only 8 years old, Robin has been hunted by the World Government for her entire life. Initially introduced as Miss All Sunday, the right-hand woman of Crocodile (a major villain and formerly one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea), Nico Robin proved to have ulterior motives for entering into the partnership. She’s an archaeologist intent on hunting down the “True History” of the world, and joined Crocodile since he was her best chance to the Poneglyph in Alabasta. Robin was prepared to kill Crocodile in case he betrayed her, but she failed in her attempt and was then rescued by Luffy, who ignored her demands to be left to die. Robin stowed away on the Going Merry as the crew left Alabasta following Crocodile’s defeat and asked to be part of the crew. Luffy agreed, despite the objections of the other Straw Hats. Robin is very serious most of the time but enjoys watching the antics of the crew. She cares for Chopper and is very protective of him and sports a very black sense of humor due to being hunted her whole life. Robin ate the Flower Flower Fruit, which allows her to sprout hundreds of arms, legs, or any part of her body from seemingly any surface she sees. However, this ability requires concentration so she is vulnerable while using it.
Going Merry
Given as a gift to Usopp and the Straw Hats by Kaya, the Going Merry has proven to be a swift and reliable vessel. It’s traveled from the East Blue, through Reverse Mountain, into the Grand Line, converted to fly mode to sail the mighty Knock Up stream to Skypiea and was stranded on a sacrificial altar in the Upper Yard of Skypiea. Although Eneru’s priest damaged it heavily, the ship was mysteriously repaired by an unknown figure seen by Usopp. Otherwise, Usopp takes care of the vessel to the best of his ability, using whatever materials he can find.
