I got someone at work to do a last-minute pledge. Really curious what the final few hours will be like. I can't see another Eternity happening, but it would be amazing.

An odd little realisation about Kickstarter just struck me:

Torment:
Pledge $10,000 or more

9 backers Limited (3 of 12 left)

ONE LIFE MATTERS - EXCLUSIVE LAUNCH PARTY AND MORE ============================= ALL Rewards from LEAVE YOUR LEGACY + DIGITAL OR HARD COPY OF EVERY INXILE GAME RELEASED FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS + INVITATION TO EXCLUSIVE LAUNCH PARTY WITH THE TORMENT TEAM (must be able to arrange travel to Newport Beach, CA) + EXTREMELY LIMITED PERSONALIZED PLAQUE acknowledging your contribution. At this level, we include you (or your company) in the OPENING CREDITS.

There's similar things in many other Kickstarters, of course.

Now, it's crossed my mind that this is going to expose names of people who are willing to give a chunk of money to a game to the outside world. Is that going to open them up to begging letters? It's not so bad when you're just 'in the credits' in general, since that'll mean your contribution size isn't clear.

And, possibly controversially: For the wealthy people who *can* afford this, is it necessarily a bad thing for prospective developers (or indeed people in fields outside gaming) to have an idea where they might be able to find an angel investor?

Update #16
And here we all stand setting history with the crowdfunding campaign for Torment: Tides of Numenera. We often speak of paradigm shifts and game changers in our industry but you are truly witnessing it in this groundbreaking new model of connecting creators with the players. You have all heard me speak to this new power, but truly it will shape the kinds of games you play and the policies of the developers and publishers. More than ever we are in sync with the simple goal of making games without ever losing the gamer’s interests. At Interplay our slogan was By Gamers, For Gamers and this attitude could not be truer today.

There is no way this game would have ever been funded without this new method of connection and without the passion of our backers who didn’t just donate but worked as a team to spread the word. You guys rock! The passion of the RPG gamer is like none other.

We are both humbled and excited that you have given us this opportunity. The team we have assembled is pretty unbelievable and I have full faith that together we will create a true classic. I never stopped working to get Chris Avellone aboard to make sure we had the band back together. But it only got better when we brought on guys like Pat Rothfuss and Kevin Saunders to take the game to new heights. The trick is always to surround ones self with brilliant people and to create an environment in which creativity can flourish.

I want to give a special shout-out to my wife Ashley for driving her insane by talking incessantly about Kickstarter, Wasteland 2 and Torment for 24 hours a day. I’d also like to thank super fan Steven Dengler who stepped up to match my dollar contribution. The world would be a better place with more Steven Denglers.

Our communication does not stop here. As you’ve seen, we do have our own creative vision for this game but it will be our regular contact with you that helps us hone in on the right aspects of it all. With this great crowdfunding success comes great responsibility and we could not take it more seriously. My confidence in delivering a classic you will love comes from this open dialogue.

As you may know we have a closing party today in which we will celebrate the success we’ve had with this campaign and countdown to the final minutes of closing. We are of course ecstatic at our current funding but we are a competitive bunch and would love to beat the total funding record that our dear friends at Obsidian currently hold. We thought it only natural to invite any backers of the game and at last count we had 100 of you RSVP that you are attending. I look forward to meeting you. And for those that cannot attend, you will be able to join us virtually at this link starting at 2:30 PDT:

And before I end my writing let me share one more incredible concept piece from Nils Hamm that showcases the male player of Torment: Tides of Numenera.

Once again I would like to thank you for making it possible for me and all my team at inXile to spend many more years creating the best RPGs we can.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
That's the main character? Generic badass?

I suppose another disfigured one could be considered a copy but still, he could be some exotic humanoid that looks both hideous and appropriate/likable in a similar manner.

Well, it's not a white guy, so that's definitely a step in the right direction.
It might be good to have him as a relatively generic guy, that change drastically as the different tides take a hold of him (or her).

The male main character needs more flaws. He looks too clean and well-kept for the surrounding environment.

I guess he doesn't look all too dissimilar generally-speaking from the female protagonist, though the art in the latter was more attractive.

I hope they get the stuff surrounding the protagonists right. One of the most enjoyable and distinctive parts of Torment was The Nameless One's nature as a sentient zombie. That alone drove countless Morte jokes, random asides from other characters, and had certain other ramifications as well (literally digging into your body for things, ripping off body parts to use for some purpose, etc).

I figured that there are a bunch of people here who have never played the original. Those people should pick it up, play it today, and then understand why you need to hand over all your spare cash to this kickstarter.

Also if Paypal numbers are still at around $90k, we only need another $15k to hit $4 million. We should be hitting it within the hour at this rate. w00t!

Mark Morgan's soundscapes are always distinctive and lovely, and they always fit every scene so perfectly. It's impossible for me to think about the Smoldering Corpse Bar without the heavy drums and the melodic wailing.

Chairman Yang

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
I'm still shocked that a Torment successor is happening...and with an adequate budget, a new setting that'll maintain the sense of discovery and mystery that Planescape: Torment had, an amazing assemblage of developers, no publisher interference, at a time when there are no meaningful technological barriers, and with lots of good design decisions already made.

I don't know how good the final output will be, but all of the inputs are about as perfect as anyone could've hoped for.

It's so good that I can't breathe

Anyone recall how much Eternity got when Paypal was factored in? I've got it into my head - possibly erroneously - that Torment is a bit behind Eternity on Paypal, which would mean it'd need more than 4M to surpass Eternity overall. It may be quite close.

edit: from their update the day after the kickstarter campaign finished:

Backers: 3,681
Pledged: $176,279

For those who shied away from reading the design doc, they do note this at the beginning:

Don’t worry that you’ll have the game spoiled if you read this document. That’s not what we’re about. We want you to be as excited about Torment as we are, but we also don’t want to reveal too much. So here’s the deal: not everything we discuss here will be in the final game. The pillars of our game, the Tides, the themes—these things are planned and well-established aspects of our design. But the details about areas, creatures, characters, and even gameplay elements like the Meres are all subject to change. Game development is highly iterative and only our best ideas will survive.

Much will change as our tale evolves and solidifies in our minds. So please enjoy these examples, knowing that the game you play will have more and better secrets.

I'm probably gonna read it. Game isn't coming out till 2015 anyway :p

So wait are there 9 companions or 8? The stretch goals make it confusing.

Seems like 9

4 in the base game

1 in "The Toy"

1 secret @ 2.5

1 secret @ 3

1 from Rothfuss

1 from Avellone

This is so Torment.

Also:

$3,909,101+$89,000+=More or less $4million!

Onwards to 4,250,000 and 4,500,000!
Need an hourly average of $31,250 for the next 8 hours to reach 4.25millions.
Need an hourly average of $62,500 for the next 8 hours to reach 4.5millions.

Well only got 7 hours from time you posted I think.

Anyway, game will probably get 4 mil even without paypal, but don't see it hitting the later stretch goals unless a few people were holding off backing big till the very end.

Aww, yeah it's 7 hours now.
Trab should have accepted that bet, looks like the 4.5 million is out of reach unless we get a mega push now.
