@Family Doctors
I used to work as a secretary for mine over 10 years ago. It was heartbreaking when she had a cerebral aneurysm (I think it was... can't remember exact diagnosis), went into a coma, then eventually passed away. She never got a chance to truly retire or rest.

Ugh, that's awful. My family doctor is the same with me, he's in his late 60s and delivered me at Mt. Sinai, and I dread the day he retires because I really feel comfortable telling him anything.

If you don't mind my asking, is it a physician working at Mt. Sinai Family Medicine?

I thought she was extremely popular?

The other night I went to a bar/club (I'm not sure which) called Stones Place. The inside was nice enough, but me and the lady had to wait in line for literally an hour. In something like -16' weather.

Guys, I've never been that cold in my entire life - as people left the line left right and centre, we stayed in it, determined to not be beaten by it. It was like a religious experience, my feet got so cold, they started to ache - then, they started to burn - which is a fucked up feeling. Then they kind of went super numb - but luckily by that point we got inside.

Basically - fucking going out in winter, it's house parties and move nights until I can walk around outside topless again.

Hazel is one of those politicians who could get elected posthumously.

She and Betty White should get together and do a show or something.

A friend of mine loves that place, I never bothered going due to its location, I'm not a fan of going to that part of the city

And next time there is an extreme cold weather advisory you might want to heed it :p

And Hazel was popular because she was able to keep taxes down

Oh god same dude. I was in Montreal for the weekend, and had to walk to a party 30 minutes away. It was about -20 out. I don't think that's including wind chill either. I had to use my scarf as a face mask.

Well I wonder if she'll start getting in trouble with Mississaugites, I figured the drama with her son would hurt her position.

I don't go that far south west normally either, I've just been the the gladstone hotel once which is nearby, and that was for an awesome 50s themed dance. But it was nice, a good mix of bar and club for my tastes - but it was far too popular.

The worst part about places like that though is while you wait in line, you get to see all those bastards who know one of the owners or bouncers or whomever just go up and be all "Yeah yeah, I know I should be waiting in line, but I just need to talk to Jimmy quick, he said he'd come out here to talk quick" - Jimmy comes out, whispers a few words to the bouncer, and those bastards get in. I need some new friends - mine don't come with any perks.

I can see how someone who is conservative on taxes would do well in a suburb like 'sauga.

Wal Mart has some at cheap prices, too. It's what I use for my movie posters.

If you want some nice ones, there might be clearance frames at Black's. Got a nice frame for my Alvin Lee autographed Marvel vs. Capcom 3 poster.

Well, it sorta did. She went from being elected with 91.1% of the vote in 2006 to being elected with 76.4% of the vote in 2010.

In other words, even with major scandal, she was, and remains, in no apparent danger of losing the vote.

Of course, now that I've so tempted fate...

I've had a cough for about 5 weeks... anybody ever have something like that? I was sick with a cough/cold/fever around December 6th or so. I got better in like 3 days but the cough just stayed with me and never went away.
I went to the doctor and told him I have been coughing for 5 weeks and he said "what do you want me to do about it?"

I guess I need a new doctor.

The doctor was probably having a bad day, but it's pretty common to get a cough that lasts for weeks after an upper respiratory tract infection. There's nothing that can be done and it'll go away on its own, so I wouldn't worry about it.

One of the weirdest stories I've heard about a GP is that they've refused to refer people to a psychiatrist unless they were contemplating suicide.

That's probably not entirely true. Generally if the GP doesn't suspect a psychiatric diagnosis that is beyond the scope of their practice (refractory major depression, bipolar, psychosis, etc.), there's no need to involve a specialist like a psychiatrist. GPs, therapists, and psychologists are more than capable of counselling for people who are just feeling a little bit blue.

Does Walmart have nice antique-y looking ones for cheap (less than $20 for 9x12ish)? I haven't been to the dirty duff since '06 and that's the only walmart near me..

They're all generic black plastic frames. Nothing antiquey-looking, though I haven't checked in ages.

Unless you're willing to pay 100+...and even more for good framing, I'd suggest just going to Micheal's and getting your own frame.

I bought a "meet the medic" from Valve...framing it cost more than the fucking picture.

Yes. Jumping into the thread rarely, and trying to reason, with a lot of 'probably's, why two stories based on a similar subject might not be legitimate will have me calling you a Defense Force.

I rarely post on GAF as it is. This is a subject I have an interest in since I'm a physician myself, and I thought I could provide some insight into why some of these doctors acted this way. I never realized you were this big of an asshole, but okay. Whatever.

Okay.

Now, the only way to get back on track is with talk about.. tipping.

Standard tip in Toronto restaurants now 20 per cent

Diners at new Roncesvalles Ave. restaurants The Westerly and The Ace are prompted to tip 20 per cent on their bill when paying with credit and debit cards on handheld terminals.

“We feel we are providing great service. Waiters don’t get paid too much,” said Tom Earl, co-owner of The Westerly.

If your waiters make too little, you don't have to pay them the industry minimum! 20% tip is usually for a job well done from me, and you really have to try hard not to get 15%. :p

I'm usually pretty gracious, especially having worked in the service industry. Still, the entitled attitude some servers (some, not all) towards not "making enough money" is disgusting. I live with two full-time male servers and hearing them occasionally complain that $300+ TAX FREE (on top of their actual wage) wasn't enough for that night grinds my gears to no end.

Prompting the customer for a 20% tip in this economy is hilariously disingenuous, in my opinion. This is coming from a guy who will happily tip upwards of 30% if I had a great meal and great service. If someone did a shitty job, prompting me for a 20% tip is only going to make me tip less.

I'm sorry but I think some people are in for a rude awakening about what they're going to get for standard tips.

I'm pretty much never going to those restaurants then. Don't fucking tell me how much I should tip. I decide that. And that guy has the fucking nerve to say waiters don't get paid enough? THEN FUCKING PAY THEM MORE MORON.

Arent they getting a minimum of $10/hr? If you are a great waiter then I provide a generous tip but this is outrageous.

Servers get paid below minimum, often +$8. Still, if they serve, let's say, 3 tables an hour, they'll be making minimum or above. Most servers need to tip out the kitchen (at a busy restaurant, depending on how much the manager decides for kitchen tips, if at all, the kitchen workers can be making an extra dollar per hour. Most places I've worked did not have kitchen tip out.) and their taxes before actually earning tips themselves. For a lot of servers I've worked with, they consider not having anything left after tax (and kitchen) "working for free," even worse yet, some will think of this as themselves having to pay the restaurant to work there, "I paid to work my shift tonight."

With the few awesome exceptions I've had the pleasure of meeting (or being served by) in my life, servers are entitled pieces of shit and it really rubs me the wrong way. Unless they have the talent and poise to serve at a 5-star place where they're expected to serve wine, or they're working a busy bar by themselves, any server that complains can fucking get bent. Find a new job if you're "not being paid enough."

I'm done grinding this axe though.

This. The standard is 15% and it should stay there.

Yes. I've heard this a few times now. My wife and I eat a lot more at home since becoming more skilled in the kitchen, but going out to eat dinner would be out of the question if 20% was the standard.

I tip 15%, sometimes even when the staff doesn't deserve it. If I've ever tipped above that, it's because I was hammered.

Yeah I tip pretty well, you have to be really awful to not get a good tip from me. Refill my drink once or ask how everything is and you'll probably getting at least 15% from me.

But definitely agreeing on when hammered, I just don't care. Cab ride was only 11 dollars and all I have is a 20? Bah I don't want to wait for change I want my bed keep the change! :(

Question to any avid golfers here. I've owned a pair of clubs for a few years, I think I'm finally going to get into it this year.

Any recommendations for where to get golf lessons?

I live in Thornhill in the Dufferin and Steeles area and have a car so if the lessons are really worth it I don't mind going somewhat far to learn.

Thanks.

Dang, I was hoping to find some decent antiquey looking frames for cheap. I don't trust online stuffs, but need a specific size so I can't go garage hunting.

Ruh roh, I hope this doesn't turn into a tip debate. Sometimes people don't realize that "do what's right for your specific situation" is the right answer, instead they care too much what others do.

This reminds me of when I was asked for tip - for food that I picked up on my own two feet. Food that takes 5 min to prepare. In any case, I'll continue to avoid restaurants like those like the plague.

To be honest, I didn't even want to go to the doctor since it's just a cough but my wife has extreme paranoia about getting sick.. so she won't come near me and would ask me at least 4 times a day to go to the doctor.
Eventually I gave in and went and I understand if he felt there is nothing he could do to fix the cough but I really didn't need the guilt trip from him. It made me feel like an idiot for going even though I didn't want to go and waited five weeks before doing so.

I thought frames would be cheap too. Hell, the generic one I got from Michael's was 100 bux. There's a framing...studio? Just a block from my house. The quote they gave me was 200+

I've done this before. W Burger Bar at Yonge and College has a 18% top option on the debit machine, I was too hammered to calculate the tip myself so I just chose this option. Otherwise 15% standard.

I was drinking $3.75 Steamwhistle pints all night at The Piston yesterday. The bill was so cheap at the end that I think I tipped way too much just because I couldn't be bothered waiting for change since I spent practically nothing on the beer!

Any beer lovers in here? If so, what are your favourite Toronto (or Ontario) local beers?

I personally think the best value is Great Lakes Brewery's Crazy Canuck
This one is brewed right here in Toronto. It's only $2.25 a can but packs a wild flavourful kick. This one is not for people that like mild beers.

Another favourite of mine is Hockley Valley Black & Tan
This one is actually brewed closer to Ottawa but I think of the Ontario brewery scene as one community and this is one of the best.

Some Doctors are completely useless. I recently got "eyelid dermatitis" (redness and flaky eyelids, very annoying). I tried everything for several months, did research, and generally felt like I had done my due diligence. Making things worse, it was slowly spreading. I had to go through my family doctor and 3 other doctors before one would finally give me a referral to a Dermatologist. Every Doc told me "don't shower so much" and "don't use these soaps". I finally go to the Dermatologist, she instantly knew what the problem was, prescribed me a cream and it was solved within 48 hours.

A lot of family doctors have no compassion. I'm a young guy. I don't want this shit to spread all over my face, but they don't really seem to care. They rush you in and out as fast as possible so that they can get more patients through, thus generating more income. One Doctor even checked Wikipedia (wtf?). While I realize that it doesn't make sense to make Specialists accessible to the public without referrals, the current system isn't working either. I feel bad for people who have very serious medical conditions.

My wife recently had extreme pain in her stomach. The family doctor told her nothing was wrong! So we went to St Michaels Hospital and after 12 hours of tests, they told us she had Diverticulitis. They said to go get a colonoscopy to make sure it was just that and nothing more serious like a tumour.
A month later the colonoscopy was done they told us that she actually doesn't have Diverticulitis and that it must have just been a bad infection in her intestine that was cured by the antibiotics they prescribed for the Diverticulitis.

I'm glad she is better now but it is slightly unsettling that she went from being told nothing was wrong, to something pretty serious is wrong to having nothing wrong again because they cured what was actually wrong by accident.

I can't believe that you had to deal with that for several months. Anything that requires specialist or further knowledge, people don't know that they have to push for a referral. If you or your doctor know what area is having the problem (ex: hormones = endocrinologist) then go for it. If your doctor won't give it to you, change doctors. Go to a walk-in clinic for the referral while changing. And if that referral doesn't help, getting a second one won't hurt.

I went to my doctor, then an eyedoctor, then a walk-in clinic, then another eye doctor before finally landing a referral to the city's best tear duct specialist. So anything is possible.
