A few fun additional facts I dug up (but I didn't bother posting it), and where that poster is bonkers:

If you look at "City", then the 4 cities aren't actually at 6Mil:

Atlanta 420,000 - 343.0 km2
Houston 2.1 Mil - 1,625.2 km2
Philadelphia 1.5 Mil - 369 km2
Toronto 2.6 Mil - 630 km2

If you skew it to the "urban" definition to 6 Million that all four of these cities occupy, then you're going to also have to included all the other transit systems within the city that covers that sprawl. The picture for Toronto suddenly looks much more different with just GO Train added on. So yeah, fun with number manipulation...

Oh, and who cares about transit when you got an Escalade, right mayor Ford?

You want to stay in the country or fine with travelling to the states? Travelling by car and if so max distance you would want to travel?

Not this year, but a couple of years ago we had a week get-away up to the Bruce Peninsula. We didn't want to fly that year, so we just rented a cottage on the water front and drove up. About four hours up and beautiful scenery. Of course, this is peak season now, so I imagine the parks will be a lot busier.

If you're heading up to Montreal, normally I'd say just hop on one of the cheapie Viarail deals, but they seem to have cut out all deals to Montreal. :(

That complex is in a terrible location. It's surrounded by office & industrial parks. Ever since Crazy Sushi closed a few months back I've steered clear.

So what does it mean that Cineplex bought it? Is it bad?

Hahaha. Was just up there this past weekend for 4 days. Have those exact same pictures. It is peak season however and it may be difficult to find a place to stay there now on short notice.

AMC has some exclusive shows that you can't see at Cineplex, which might make it more difficult to find some movies.

Yeah, the grotto is awesome to photograph. We had a bunch of other walks too, but most were overcast and not quite as 'stunning'. Given that you can do the trip on a two day weekend, I'd recommend everyone see the place at least once.

This photo reminds of this funny thing I saw last summer. I saw some tourists looking up at the CN Tower and the son said to his father "Look at that tall tower! Is it taller than the Empire State Building?" and his father replied "No. The Empire State Building is the tallest building in the world!"
haha my head almost exploded at that misinformation. For one thing the CN Tower is much taller than the Empire State Building. Secondly, nevermind the world, the Empire State Building isn't even the tallest building in the US, the Sears (Willis) Tower in Chicago is.
I guess there are a lot of know-nothing know-it-alls out there.

Nobody called it the Empire State Building... the father just wrongly said the Empire State Building was taller than the CN Tower (which it obviously isn't)

and yes, most Americans call the CN Tower the Space Needle because obviously every tower in the World would have the exact same name. Just like the Space Needle in Shanghai and the Space Needle in Berlin.

I think Torontonians undervalue the CN Tower. It was a real engineering marvel for when it was built. Pretty amazing for 30 years it was the tallest building. Dinner up there with guests from out of town is always a great experience.

It is indeed one of the shittiest complex locations. I remember when the letters started falling off the Putting Edge sign one by one until it just said "ING EDGE" for months without getting fixed.

Issue with Toronto is that everything most of the cables are underground. Not a lot of neighbourhoods are serviced through above ground wiring

In other news Rogers cable has been out and will continue to be unavailable in my house since last friday. How much do you think I can get from them for a full week of cable disruption. I have the olympics on my side unless they finally send somoene to fix it by tomorrow.

I think they're pretty good about reimbursement on a disruption. For a week you could pretty easily get a quarter of your bill knocked off for the month.

lol, looking at Ford's history prior to becoming Mayor.. how did this ever happen. There's so many to choose from.. not even counting all the crap that's happened in the last couple of years.



Adventures in the USA
In 1999, Ford was arrested in Miami for driving under the influence (DUI) and marijuana possession charges. According to the statement recorded by the arresting officer, Ford was acting nervous, had blood shot eyes and had "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath". Ford threw his hands up in the air and told the police officer, "Go ahead, take me to jail. Until he was questioned by reporters, Ford said that the marijuana charge had "completely, totally slipped my mind" because the more serious issue during that arrest was the DUI charge. Ford initially denied the DUI charge, saying instead he was arrested because he "refused to give a breath sample".

Councillor Ford attends sporting events

On April 15, 2006, Ford (a sitting councillor at the time) attended a Maple Leafs hockey game at the Air Canada Centre. Visibly intoxicated and belligerent, he began to insult a couple seated behind him, who were visiting from out of town. Two security guards escorted Ford out of the building. When confronted about the episode three days later by a National Post reporter, Ford denied even having been at the game, declaring that he hadn't been to a hockey game since Christmas. "This is unbelievable," he told the Toronto Star. "I wasn't even at the game, so someone's trying to do a real hatchet job on me, let me tell you." The following day, Ford admitted that he had lied to the media about the incident, and finally apologized for his behaviour: “That was just stupidity. I feel terrible about it. My wife and I had a little bit too much to drink . . . I made a mistake that will never happen again.”

The situation became even more uncomfortable for us. I remember quietly saying to my wife that “at least there were no kids around.”
My wife responded with “look right beside him.”

Sitting two seats to the right of this gentleman (who was continuing on with his rant) was a young boy that was approximately 7-8 years old, sitting beside his father.

The father had a look of extreme discomfort on his face. As I glanced around and back to my left one row and approximately 5-6 seats over, there was another young boy of approximately the same age.

This gentleman had already ruined our evening and was proceeding to taint the experience of this game for a number of other adults and young children.

The gentleman continued on in an extremely loud way with his belligerence and obscenities to the point where I turned and calmly asked him to “tone it down a little.”

He responded, again in an extremely loud way with a verbal assault on me personally. “Who the f*** do you think you are? Are you some kind of right wing Commie bastard? Fearing that the situation would escalate further, I did my best to avoid any conversation and/or eye contact with the gentleman.

At one point he shouted the following question at my wife and I, “Do you want your little wife to go over to Iran and get raped and shot?” and continued on with other extremely asinine comments.

On March 7, 2007, Ford made controversial comments about cyclists' use of the roads, saying, "What I compare bike lanes to is swimming with the sharks. Sooner or later you're going to get bitten... Running for Mayor, thoughts same sex marriages
Fundamentalist Christian pastor and one-time mayoral candidate, Wendell Brereton, shifted from the fringe to centre-spotlight Wednesday after his public endorsement of Rob Ford sparked questions concerning the mayoral front-runner's stance on same-sex marriage.

Brereton, who is a retired OPP officer, said he had a “fundamentalist view on how families are oriented. I believe in heterosexual marriage. That’s who I am, that’s what my belief system is.”


When Ford took to the microphone and was asked if he shared that view, he said, "We're together, we share the same thoughts".

When asked to further elaborate, an uncomfortable-looking Ford tried to sway the topic of conversation away from sexual orientation, back to the fiscal responsibility, but after being pressed he finally stated:

Yea same, I was hoping to keep it my entire life. Getting the new health card is going to be a huge hassle. And why do we care about expiring cards anyways? Someone from any country could show up at a GTA hospital with no money/insurance/health card and would still be treated and the following day could return to their country. But lets not focus on that, lets hassle our own citizens. Smh.

I've been looking for a 1 bedroom apartment for about a month and a half. I don't have many constraints other than it must be walking distance to a subway station and in a half decent area. Apparently that's pretty much what everyone seems to be looking for. I went to view an apartment pretty much across the street from Broadview station. The unit was perfect, clean, great layout, no smells, great price, etc. It was the tenant showing the unit for the landlord so unfortunately I couldn't try and make a deal on the spot. Now I have to play the waiting game with an application and there are apparently 12 other people applying. Finding a decent apartment in this city can be more difficult than finding a job.

Any tips? Should I be offering to pay a bit more rent if I really like the place?

My girlfriend and I wanted out of our old 3 bedroom apartment after 11 months (of a 12 month lease) so we needed to find someone to sublet it for a month and make sure they were willing to stay for at least another year (so essentially a 13 month lease).

I posted a craigslist at and received over 100 legit responses within 12 hours before i had to take down the ad for my own sanity. I couldn't handle responding to everyone individually so I sent a mass email to everyone telling them we would do 2 open houses on one weekend and if they wanted to see the apartment they should come.

So they did, and it was a gong show, and at the end of it we had 21 different applications. Ultimately the landlord chose the people who was willing to pay $200 a month more than we had been paying. Insane.
