Toronto-Age |OT3| Going Off the Rails on a Gravy Train

Random post for the day. For some reason, I was just thinking about the time I was at the Chapters near Scotiabank theater and I heard a group of dudes planning out a video game.

...

It sounded awful....

Why didnt anyone tell me how good Pulled Pork poutine was at Smokes Poutine. My god <3

Haha! The perfect 2am post! (I prefer the smoked meat poutine personally)

so today is moving day (2 minutes away from where I currently live)! I picked today to move so that no one could make me watch that horrible yearly football match. Wish me luck!

That's why I love the hole in the walls, you go in - get your shawarma or burger and go somewhere else and eat it. Delicious and better than fast food.

Word. I avoid restaurant restaurants like the plague downtown, people who eat at them with average salaries probably don't have any savings.

Here is an article and new renderings from UrbanToronto for the proposed casino / residential / convention centre proposal:

Great photo. Nice find, Added Time.

Makes me just want to walk on them...
Goodbye forever pennies! I hate you all!
They're still going to be valid payment, though. Not that I mind, really.

Already got the memo at work to "try" to round up/down change, but we haven't really made the effort.

I just checked the two ebgames downtown and both were sold out of fire emblem :( tear bending.

Yea, this is a botched launch for a number of reasons. Upon contacting Future Shop this morning via email I got this response:
Dear Willectro

Thank you for contacting Future Shop in regard to the Fire Emblem: Awakening (Nintendo 3DS) . We understand that when you began to place your order the web site indicated that it was “in stock” however, during the order process the status changed upon completion. The status in step 3 of 3 in the checkout process is the most updated inventory level at the time you placed your order. While we make every effort to ensure that stock levels meet our customer’s demands, we are not always able to anticipate consumer reaction to a product. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced and will make every effort to get your product to you as quickly as possible. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact us again by emailing service@futureshop.com or by calling 1-800-663-2275.

Thank you for contacting Future Shop, we look forward to serving you in the future.

Sincerely,

Customer Service Representative
Futureshop

I don't even care when I receive the game really, but now I understand the anger that people on here have around pre-ordering online. Never again. I just don't understand why Future Shop would advertise that they have quantities of the game when they don't and why the order wasn't going to ship but they still couldn't send an email to notify me of this. I instead had to contact them. I understand that Future Shop may not have received the number they ordered (and they have policies, blah blah) from Nintendo or whoever, but as a customer that has nothing to do with me.

If it was me, I'd take some non drowsy gravol or ginger pills. You might feel some vertigo with all the crystal architecture. I know I did :|

I buy few games at launch and those I'm buying at launch I want right away. So I'll avoid online and buy in store to avoid situations like this. People have had tons of issues with Futureshop and shipments, especially when it came to the mass preorders that came from the E3-preorder promos.

Thankfully I was able to grab FE early last week and avoid all the low shipment hassle. It's great and you guys will surely enjoy it.. when you get it. :p

Not sure if to complain here or the Android thread but why the hell is Nexus 4 on Wind going to be $549.

So made. I thought it'd be cheaper to get it using the Wind Tab too :\

Well at that point you'd be stupid to not just buy it from Google directly.

This will be the first and last time I pre-order online.

Greedy fucking Future Shop, trying to get more orders than they can fill. There needs to be penalties for businesses who pull this shit. But there won't, and so continues the cycle of Canadians being doormats for corporations. It's got to the point that its shocking when a company provides the services they say they will. Teksavvy is a great example, as they wouldn't even exist if Bell and Rogers had their shit together.

Their shit is to swindle Canadians out money due to their monopoly.

I can't find anything on it either. This just happened today?

Not usually the type of thing that is reported by the media to avoid glorifying the actions. Out of sight, out of mind is best for people. How many times have you heard about subway suicides? Rarely, but it's not an uncommon occurrence.

Hey guys! I'm going to the ROM for the first time in years. I was wondering if anyone has been recently, and if the Ultimate Dinosaurs exhibit is worth the extra $10.

I went just a couple of months ago. The Ultimate Dinosaurs part was the best part of the entire museum. The rest has been so parred down from what it used to be that it's downright pathetic

It used to be impossible to see everything worth seeing in a day because they had so much on display. They have so little now I was able to cover pretty much the entire building for the first time and was severely disappointed by the lack of exhibits and how little explanation they have for the ones that are on display now.

Wow any particular reason for this?

When they renovated to add the hideous glass extension building they also changed a lot of the interior. They completely got rid of the Discovery Zone and majorly water downed many of the exhibits.

The Glass building was supposed to give them more space but ironically they seem to have less on display then ever before. I went up the the top floor and their was hardly anything there.

The normal Dinosaur exhibit is a shadow of it's former self. The midevil exhibit has been stripped to the bone with a fraction of the arms and armor that it used to have. About the only thing that hasn't changed much is the Egypt exhibit which is mostly the same as before sans them stripping out the outdated interactive sound parts.

Oh and they ruined the Batcave when they renovated it too. It felt so much shorter and bland.

It's like almost all the effort that used to go into the entire building has mostly gone into the special limited time exhibits. Ultimate Dinosaurs was miles better then the normal version.

I've gone to the Rom a LOT over the years, it used to be an exciting and fun place to visit but now it's become so sterile and lifeless. I was so disappointed by my last visit that I actually wrote them a letter complaining about the changes.

Just got back from Korea town. Goddamn that wind chill.

I hope all you #teamwinter jerks freeze your nuts off.

I got frostnip on my thighs somehow. Nose, cheeks, chin and all the other parts of my face that are completely exposed? Nothing. But somehow my fully clothed legs got frostnipped. Such a pain in the ass.

Speaking of the ROM, is that the place where it's free on Tuesdays or something or was that the AGO? Or maybe it was just discounted?

The ROM is free for university students on Tuesdays. You just need to flash a student card, not sure if they care if you're really a student or not.

I didn't get an interview at any med schools here :(... damn you Ontario!

is there anyone who was in a similar position willing to give me some advice?

I applied to a few other programs but I really don't know what I'm doing :/. I applied to Physical and Occupational Therapy (Toronto), Physician Assistant (McMaster) and Pharmacy (Toronto). I think I'd like pharmacy but with the job market the way it is... I just don't want to be stuck with a huge amount of debt with no job prospects.

some of my stats:
cGPA 3.75 (skewed because of a shitty first year, my last 3 years is at 3.91)
My MCAT scores suck though - writing T, 10 biological, 10 physical, 8 verbal :(
ECs: basic hospital experience, member of some clubs, research lab

I don't want to go Caribbeans. I was thinking applying to some US schools next year but dat tuition cost... I'd rewrite MCAT as well for a better verbal school. But ugh so much uncertainty...I hate it.

Uncertainty really does suck man. Hoping to apply in 2 years so unfortunately can't help you much but I'd be curious to hear anyone's advice for your situation. Maybe try the med student thread as well if you haven't already. Wish you good luck. I know it is an incredibly tough and often times demoralizing process.

Off topic: is anyone using Mobile gaf and noticing avatars missing or not loading? Been happening all day for me.

Honestly, they're probably chasing special events in an attempt to draw more attention. I know the last time I was interested was when they had the Dead Sea scrolls.

I saw that they got rid of Free Fridays though. I don't think they're all that concerned about general attendance anymore. :p

I hear that the Science Centre is completely dead too, for what that's worth. But that's Toronto for you, right?

You could always apply for Nursing. That seems to be a stop-gap program for some people looking to go into Medicine.

Hello all, I live in Vancouver right now and I may be moving for work from RBC Vancouver to Toronto.

I'm looking at places to live but I really have no idea what the vibe of each area is. I'm looking for a condo to rent that's not insanely expensive (I'm guessing downtown Toronto is probably out of the question) but in a somewhat nice/upscale neighbourhood -- probably somewhere that's dense with condos and nearby stores/supermarkets/transportation to downtown as I won't have a car. If anyone's been to Vancouver, I'd say something along the lines of Burnaby (Metrotown area or Brentwood Mall area) or False Creek.

Well the Ultimate Dinosaur exibit was easily the best part of my visit so make sure to at least see that if nothing else. Especially since it won't be their much longer

Yah I saw the Dead Sea scrolls as well but didn't have time to see much of the rest of the building due to being with other people who where tired of walking after just two exibits :(

And yay the Science Center has really gone down hill as well. It was so amazing when I went their when I was younger. The last time I went was when they had the special Marvel Comic's exhibit which was really fun but I remember thinking about how run down and sparse the rest of the place felt.

Yeah, the last the time I was there was a high school trip.

Heck, I remember when Toronto had a Planetarium... which turned into a Star Trek exhibit... which has since become nothing, as far as I know.

I feel like the province and the city don't really have much of a commitment to these places nowadays. I haven't been to the AGO in ages, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was much in the same way.

A friend and I swapped cards (she is a...well, she) and they don't even bat an eyelash, really.

Tossing my opinion into the ring; I really enjoy the ROM. Maybe it's that the novelty hasn't worn off as I only visited once ages ago as a kid prior to my move to Toronto a few years back, but I find it to be an exciting experience. I only wish I could peek into the alternate universe where they had gone all-glass as originally planned for the 'crystal' addition.

added_time, is there a way to get all your photos of the day posts together somehow without going though this entire thread? I remember really wanting to show a few certain ones to someone but I didn't save them. Keep it up by the way. Really great stuff.

Ugh I went to the science centre for body worlds a few years ago and that was amazing, but the actual science centre was shockingly out of date. It made me really sad because that place was so amazing when I was a kid.

Give us your budget and we'll give you an idea. If you're from vancouver then the rent here isn't going to be much worse.

So true...its pathetic.
I went last year...its exactly the same as it was 10 years ago.

One last question about the ROM, is that big T-Rex skeleton still there?

I also remember that dig site for kids, they'd give you brushes, and you could brush off the dirt that were on the "fossils"

Let's say $900ish/month if it's the absolute perfect place. Ideally around 700-800. Just need a 1BR.

You'll be hard pressed to find a one bedroom for under $800, unless you are in some of the more undesirable neighbourhoods far outside of the core. Assuming you're going to be working downtown, you have a few options. Cluster of apartments at the foot of Forest Hill (Bathurst and St Clair) go for around $900. They're a short subway hop downtown. Apartments east along the Danforth run in the $850-$900 range (and much higher), quality varying by price of course. The Annex, around U of T (Spadina and Bloor, heading west) offers some of the cheaper apartments you'll find in a nicer neighbourhood, because of all the student housing. You'll probably be able to pull one in for around $900 on the lowest end of things, but most will run you more..

If you expand your budget into the $950 range, more places like Bloor Village West, the Beaches, Yonge and St Clair, as well as some apartment clusters downtown, open up to you. However if you really are pressed to stay under $800 per month, consider a bachelor, or renting a basement apartment. Basement apartments can go from terrible nightmares to incredibly nice new renos. A lot of course depends on the people you're renting from and respect for privacy.

My new 1 bedroom apartment is $1200 and most people say I got a steal with it. This is in the Annex (Dupont and Spadina).
You can get a bachelor for your price range in a nice area but a 1 bedroom in that price range would either require you to live in a bad area or an area that is far out from the city centre.
