Taxi was around 50 bucks last year. Might be more.

If you're feeling brave and you don't have a lot of luggage, you might try to catch the public bus that goes to the subway. That'll be 3 dollars each in that case.

I would just splurge on a cab. It costs a lot but will be a far better experience. Pearson airport is a nightmare at best.

Yeah, but it's a good way to say 50 bucks and a lot of people don't seem to know that the bus is there (at least, it's never been too full when I've taken it).

EDIT: If I had a car, I would be yours and jarosh's personal chauffeur. And male escort. c:

well you don't need a car to take us up on the second part ;)

thanks for the info about the taxi, everyone. i'm going to see if the hotel we end up staying at has a shuttle bus that can pick us up, i reckon that would be a lot cheaper. i don't mind taking public transport but it can be a bit of a pain if you've got a lot of luggage and happen to hit a bad time like rush hour (happened to me in london on the tube, not fun).

50 bucks potentially split between 4 people for a cab is not too bad though.

Don't know how long their flight would be, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to bus it through TO after that. I'd rather pay the $50 CAD to get a direct transport line to my hotel.

Just my opinion on it though.

I grew up in Toronto and I went to high school in Barrie. It's a great city, but it's certainly overrated. Everything is expensive, there's too many people, too much traffic.

I moved to northeast Alberta, about 3 hours of Edmonton, and life is sooo much better here....

To recap: you went to school in Barrie and then settled three hours from bloody Edmonton...

Basically everyone who complains about Toronto has a similar history. Face it, Toronto is just not for you. Toronto is a large city and you have decided through life to live in anything but. Townies complain about Toronto but really how relevant is their opinion when it comes to rating a city? You obviously don't like it, you never even bothered to live there as an adult, and yet opinions on what it is and what it isn't are spoken as if they have merit. It's always the same.

I was born in Montreal and then was moved to Toronto (North York) as a kid. Once I was on my own I moved downtown and haven't looked back. I love my town. Toronto is big, fast, diverse, cool, and always different.

Some things need to be added to the list.

Food:
Firkin Pubs can be found throughout the city and beyond. This is a great chain of pubs with really good food. Their wings & fries is some of my favourite in the city.

California Sandwiches started just off College and have spread throughout the city and beyond. THE BEST veal sandwich on earth. Seriously.

St. Lawerence Market is not only one of the best places to shop downtown but there is a stall which makes Peameal Bacon sandwiches which is also ligitimately world reknown. If you find yourself eating one of these sandwiches on a Saturday morning then you are living life the right way.

The Elephant & Castle is a pub worth drinking at and while the food is decent I don't put it above the Firkin pubs. What's nice about the location on Yonge north of Dundas is that it use to be a bank and the archetecture shows. A very classy place to quaff a pint.

Pho Da Bau a franchise of Vietnamese restaurants that have the best soup and springrolls around. Downtown has many good Viet places but these, my favourite, can only be found in the outskirts.

The House on Parliament is absolutely worth it. A quaint and cozy pub with a true gormet menu. This is where your Boddingtons comes with a home made blue cheeseburger with sauteed onions or something equally good. Thought to be the perfect place for a first date.

Geeky Stuff:
Game Shack is my choice even though that area is saturated with gaming stores or departments. It's basically the only 'mom-&-pop' shop left downtown and I feel the the big franchises get enough money. They're also good with trades.

401 Games located on Yonge just north of Gerrard is the best hobby store we have downtown. Lots of RPGS, trading card games, and miniatures. They have regular tournaments for all sorts of games.

Active Surplus on Queen is a treasure trove of junk. You never know what you'll find and every couple months my work buddies and I make a lunch trip out of it. Just a bunch of random electronics but you are sure to find a gem every time you go.

Clubs:
Footwork is still around - thank god - because now that Richmond is drying up this is one of the only places for the true heads to get down. Banging music and a stable of resident D.J.s as good as any headliners. Man I'm getting too old for this shit!

Guvernment and all related clubs attached defy expectations and is still going. It is a legitament world-class superclub and is named as such in all the international trade papers.

When I have more time I will add to the list. If anyone has questions about downtown I'll be happy to give my opinion.

I wouldn't add Elephant and Castle or Firkin pubs to the list, as they are both national chains. They are also just generic pubs, nothing particularly amazing (though they are good and fun).

Hey I think you should add this to the OP. This place saved my life many times:

Hassle Free Clinic provides free medical and counselling services in many areas of sexual health.

This Toronto-loathing poster boy for Alberta never mentions that he was born in, and grew up in... Toronto.

Damn, how can this thread have gone so far without a mention of Active Surplus? I've loved that place since my dad dragged me there when I was a little kid.

Thanks for the food recommendations OP. I been looking for some new pizza places. Pizzeria Libretto looks awesome. Will go there this weekend to try it.

I need people to remind me that I live in downtown T.O. now. I should really take more advantage of it.

SpeedingUptoStop

will totally Facebook friend you! *giggle* *LOL*
Wing Company on King & Bathhurst is fantastic. Get Buffalo Wings mixed with Poutine in any of their like, 50 flavors (all fantastic) and you have something to eat every day, the rest of your life, for under $10 per meal.

i'm sure the OP will prove very helpful! i wonder, though, if anyone has any hotel recommendations? we're looking for something in the downtown that is less than $200 a night for 2 people.

You might look at the Delta Chelsea. It's right downtown. I've stayed there a few times and it's been a decent place for me.

P.S. I don't live in TO. I'm a few hours down the road in London, which is just about the right the distance. :)

Have not been back to Toronto in a while how's the current Job and Housing market? Currently in Montreal and my lack of French is preventing me from finding anything halfway decent in IT.

If I were you I would try to learn French asap. Montreal > Toronto. I was born in Montreal and still have family and friends there, the only thing preventing me from moving there is my lack of French.

Sonic Boom is a pretty great record store, if it hasn't already been mentioned. They have a great selection and some pretty cool in-store events. I'm seeing Do Make Say Think there next month.

Also: Rotate This, Criminal Records

Sonic Boom does have some cool in-store events but their prices are absolutely ridiculous.

The Lakeview is great for semi-cheap food, all night long. Its across from Trinity Bells, on Dundas, West side corner of the park. Expect a boat load of hipsters after the bars close though. If you order take out, its usually pretty fast. Pulled Pork poutine is delicious. They have cheap cheap beer on Sundays. Deep fried mars bar. mmmmm

How can you say that? You seem to be forgetting that Montreal is in Quebec.

I have a good friend who moved to Montreal and took french for three years. He never was able to find a decent job that utilized his skills and experience. He came back to Toronto and landed a fantastic job in the travel industry.

Montreal is extremely hard to crack if you're a foreigner and by foreigner I mean any non-Quebecer.

For wings in the GTA, there's also All Star Wings.

They have locations in Richmond Hill (Yonge/Elgin), Markham (16th/Woodbine), Vaughan (Jane/Rutherford).

For those craving Rotisserie/BBQ Chicken and don't like the dryness of every other BBQ chicken out there, or think it's too hard or the quantity of side dish like fries is too low or think it's too expensive: Look no further!

George's Deli & BBQ at 254 Dundas Street East is your destination. They don't show any greed when it comes to gravy or hot sauce or fries. Whether you order quarter or half chicken, they'll make sure you are full by the time you are done.

Fuck you Swish Chalet, George's Chicken is THE best Rotisserie Chicken I've ever had. It's so perfectly made that they only give you a fork to eat it. A FUCKING FORK! You don't need a knife in this place cause the meat will come off with just a fork! Their fries are amazing and gravy and hot sauce makes it fucking amazing!

It's open early, it closes very late and it's always busy and always fresh and always delicious!

The only downside (or upside, depends on how you look at it) is that the location. It's in the heart of Toronto but it's in a sketchy neighbourhood. I've never had a problem there though but yeah, it's a little sketchy.

HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Everyone who I recommend it to gets hooked on it. IF this isn't in the OP, then you are missing out on Toronto's best kept secret. BELIEVE THAT, PLAYA!

I just need to add two things.

Wings: Bistro on Avenue Rd (Avenue Rd north of Lawrence. Across the street from Avenue Nissan). I started going to it a little over 15 years ago. They own (used to own?) St Louis Bar and Grill on Yonge before franchises started popping up everywhere.

Burgers: Johnny's Charcoal Broiled Hamburgers (Victoria Park and Sheppard). It's routinely ranked at or near the top for burgers in all of the GTA.

Finally, some real winter in the city. And some snow on top of all this ice. Learn to clear your sidewalks, people!

Should be a nightmare to drive in the next few days, take GO/TTC if possible. And then expect massive GO Train delays too.. haha.. better yet, work from home.

Kinitari

Black Canada Mafia
Tatoo rock parlor was a blast on Saturday. Highly recommend it if you are a black dude with dreads, GIRLS WILL BE ALL OVER YOU, GODDAMN.

It was such a surreal experience, at one point this girl just hands me her phone and I am thinking "I'm sorry, what do you want me to do with this?"

IIRC, Waterloo, right? You're not going to have much choice other than staying inside. That, or just hit up Conastoga mall.

No, but I'll probably be back quite a few more times over the next couple of months. Last weekend I was there for Winterlicious with some friends so it was mostly stuffing our faces :) Wish I saw this thread before we booked the places. Went to Verona's and Horizons. Horizons was a great deal actually. $15 + $11 to get up the tower.

lol yeah :p Not much to do here but go out for food... Ugh I never understood why Torontonians in Waterloo complained about the cold. Now I realize that it really is colder here =[

No matter how bad the snow is I usually have to go in.

I live in north Richmond Hill so it's a solid 1.5 hr commute down to Bloor where I work.

I have VPN so I'll be working still, but at least I won't have to trek down.

I'm working at a building on Avenue just north of Eglinton. Parking is horrible because the plows can't clear the streets properly because everyone parks on the street. I'm fully expecting to wake up tomorrow morning and call my foreman to let him know I'm not coming it. A couple of co-workers (one in Brampton, the other in Woodbridge) also want me to text them in the morning if I'm not going in so they won't either.
