Tribes Ascend Beta Thread: Shazbot!

I'm playing too much Tribes I think... Every time I'm driving on the highway and the street starts to go up and down, it feels like I'm about to ski and jet pack. I know it's very nerdy, but it's not like I'm thinking about it, my body just started feeling like this after about 2 hours of playing the other day. It's freaking me the fuck out.

Edit: It kind of reminds me of how I'd feel after playing Guitar Hero and everything seemed like it started to stretch after I quit playing the game.

And then on the highway "Shit! Gotta hit the notes!"

Damage is still not repaired across a 7+ miles stretch.

Let's put it this way .... since downloading the beta I haven't touched Battlefield 3 (and Battlefield is my "second" favorite multiplayer franchise ever ... you can probably guess what my first has always been since 1998)

Tribes 1 was always my crack. And there is enough Tribes 1 in this game that I'm going to need rehab all over again.

There's some things that are annoying (locked loadouts, inventory station changes) but overall it feels like I've come home. They nailed gameplay (duelling), skiing is almost perfect (they are still adjusting in the beta but you can see they are going to "get it", the game is still a constant mash of "shazbots, defend our base, NO, YESYES, NONO, Attack!, Retreive our flag Howd that feel howd that feel?!" from start to finish, you still have base rapes, capper chases, flag standoffs, snipers still get owned from behind, and heavies that go too far up the field end up in a fight for their life ....

yeah it's Tribes. Now if you'll excuse me I gotta go shoot up.

I am pretty sure that I hate all of you that get to play this right now. :D

While the dates may move around some based on our internal testing, the next patch to Tribes Ascend is planned toward the end of this coming week (Thursday or Friday).

We are trying to squeeze in as much as we can to this next patch.

While more is currently planned, here are some of the items that have already been coded and are in the testing phase.

Increase speed at which experience points are gained (This was actually hot-fixed into the game through a server restart on Nov 6).
Remove speed cap. Implement various falling, skiing, and jetpack physics changes.
Projectiles inherit more velocity from the shooting player.
Adjusted flag throwing physics to improve throwing in specific directions.
New tooltips for Skills and redesigned layout for the Skills popup window.
Added two-step process for selecting both class perks at the same time.
Different colored chat for same team vs enemy team.
Fix for zoom breaking if zoom was enabled while a player died (this only happened when the
Toggle Zoom feature was enabled).
Fix a number of issues with Settings menu and saving settings.
Help text ignores are now properly saved.
Fixed post process effects persisting to the main menu when disconnected from a match
Fixed hit indicator being on the opposite side for the back side hits.
Fixed mipping issues on many hand models as well as the spinfusor and sniper rifle
Separated input release time and animation time from inventory stations.
Fixed bug with call-in cooldown not behaving properly.
Added the synching of PID-loop state between client/server for Shrike. This should lower server correction and possibly eliminate the “death blossom.”
Allow re-selections of Perks that player has already assigned to a character.
Fixed bugs with wrong popup windows, lost button events and wrong buttons visible in different states.
Store redirects to purchase gold from store when not enough gold on player to purchase classes.
Fixed an issue where context help messages would not disappear if the player died near an object showing help text.
Improved projectile behavior for Raider’s NJ4SMG, Infiltrator’s Nova Colt, and Doombringer’s Chaingun.
Fixed an issue where the health regen effect would cancel the jammer pack effect.
When a player enters an inventory station, they begin health regen immediately.
Support for “Borderless Window” option. Removes border from window (best use is to run at monitor’s full-screen resolution -- allows for faster Alt-Tabbing in aand out of the game).
Brand New Rabbit Map
Several server-side fixes for stability, etc.

We'll see how removing speed cap works out. I already feel pretty hamstrung compared to T1 for light d. Between no mines, bodyblocking not working right, and Heavy on Flag being able to be knocked with even the pathfinder disclauncher, I'm fairly worried.

Will of course hold back judgement until the patch is out.

Perks and class unlocks are making it pretty damn unbalanced right now. Specifically with the light classes+boost. Goddamn they fly too fast, so I have to use the Assault rifle on them.

Otherwise I'm quite enjoying it. Unlocks are going to take forever.

I'm upset that I can't be light D with spinfusor, launcher, and chaingun.

I find the skiing to be a bit odd, in that you press spacebar and just glide across anything... I feel like it requires a lot less skill than T1. I'm also not yet used to the duration of pack energy. Larger reservoirs that refill slower it seems... I prefer smaller tanks that fill up quick.

Otherwise it's pretty fun.

Chaingun?

Man I blow so much at this, too many years of bulletdrop machineguns and pistol have made me once again a complete rookie at rockets, disclaunchers etc. :(

Yeah, that's my only qualm with this right now. I hate being on a team that has only soldiers on it, while the other teams flag is covered by walls and turrets, and have heavy armors at our generator, while proceeding to capture our flag with a light armor who boost away at speeds that are unattainable for a medium armor.

This patch reads like poetry. They're on the right track and with removing speed caps and increasing XP gains I feel they're really listening to the audience and want to get this right.

I need into this beta so bad, so bad.

This is a team based game with pretty well defined roles for the classes. Light classes are meant to be cappers and chasers. The jumper, who has the boost, has a lower capped speed than the pathfinder. It's actually even slightly lower from Ranger from what I can tell. Playing a medium and hoping to fill the chasing role effectively is not what you should be looking for in the class.

Perks themselves don't really change a whole lot, at least not enough to create any significant glass ceiling of skill.

The easiest and safest but probably lenghiest thing to do is to ask a mod. They can look up what has been edited.
From what I have seen he answered the first question first and then edited the answer for the second question in. I don't accuse him of anything, he probably genuinly saw the other question just moments later after I answered. Of course coming from my mouth you don'T have to believe me.

I understand key begging is frowned upon, but I'd like to give this game a go if anyone has a spare key available. I played T1/T2 back in the day and want to see how this game stacks up against my cherry-picked memories of those games.

Well, you don't see the problem with that when it takes 30 hours+ to unlock a single class?

Edited it in, yes, but I wasn't aware of his post at the time. Edited it another time after that as well. But no matter what, he was 3 minutes earlier than me. Give the key to Des0lar.

Bastard Des0lar, be sure to tell me what it is like :D

You got it right. My first answer was regarding the first question. I should really look through the entire thread before answering. :D

Thank you. Very generous of you. :) I will make sure to post my impressions in this thread! Been a long time since I played a nice fast paced shooter like tribes.

Not really. Solider is great for base defense or even making a mess in midfield. Ranger is a perfectly suitable capper on Crossfire, and with proper routes can serve as a chaser on the other map. Just got to have the right starting point to give chase, and know how and where to cut off the other guy. One thumper shot will stop a pathfinder in their tracks.

Also, during that (less than 30 hours, cause I already have like 16000 credits), you're playing tribes.

I have enough gold to unlock one more class, but I can't decide which. So far I've got Raider, Pathfinder, Juggernaut and Technician. I'm thinking of getting the Sentinel, but I'm not sure how good snipers really are in this game. I rarely see any, and if I do they rarely get a kill on me. Are they just bad players or are snipers underpowered in this game?

About 30 hours to unlock a single class? Seriously? This is why I hate the Free 2 Play model...
Not that bad. Plus, they're pretty cheap.

After talking to them at PAX, they're really trying to approach this from a League of Legends perspective, as far as getting critical mass playing and having a really well done introduction to the game. Part of this is using a modified ELO system that takes into account time played as a major factor.

The classes that are free are probably the best choices for an intro into tribes (Soldier + Ranger). Between the two, you probably have the greatest flexibility of roles as well.

Sniping is crazy hard due to a lack of a good zoom. There's also a bug right now around dying while you have zoom toggled, which breaks the function. It's fixed right now if you turn off toggle zoom. However, the guy that I play with that is the master of hitscan weapons plays sniper 90% of the time. He always has the most kills on the team.

I'd suggest jumper. Class is crazy fun if you like playing defense/chaser.

They are seriously underpowered from my experience. I remember shooting some guy with 3 fully charged shots and he still came back for me with the damn disc!!

This man is a liar!!!

I will go back and check it out for myself. But low ammo count and terrible damage made me dismiss the class, and I like hitscan weapons!!!!

If it's all in my head, I will use Sniper even more.

I'm still a long way from my first unlock due to not having much time to play, but would Pathfinder be a good choice?

The class unlock is gotta be faster, or at least make it look faster.

Because right now it is at a Halo Reach Armor Purchase lvl where you are at 10,000 and they want 1,000,000 for one small thing.

Buuuuut, it did get me to pre order the game and get VIP status so one might argue their strategy worked perfectly lol

Hopefully the VIP bonus will be significant. The VIP servers aren't up yet so we're not getting tha bonus.

Pathfinder is a solid mobile class period. Nitron grenades give you the ability to chase and not have to rely on your disk aim.

Stupid post incoming....

Is that the right way to use the Pathfinder Grenades? lol

Honestly, I would have prefered instead a "Money up front" package where I get the whole game instantly, can play any class or even better, create my own classes and pick and choose from weapons, armor type, package and so forth.

30 hours, I get annoyed when it takes longer then 2-3 to unlock a weapon in BF3.

Yes, the pathfinder nades are for separating the flag from the flag carrier. They do a tiny amount of damage, but they are 100% for chasing.

Unfortunately the game wouldn't actually exist with that pricing model.

$50 gives you every class.

The 25 Euro I spent on pre-purchasing gave me 3000 gold, that is enough for 5 class unlocks for a total of 2600 which leaves me with 400 I cannot spend without buying more, each class costing 520 just to mess with you (I hate these modern business models....fuck you so much). That leaves me with 5 classes still left to unlock. Which either require me to spend another 23 Euro on 3000 gold which in the end is gonna leave me with another 800 gold I cannot spend. Or I can play 150 hours to unlock each class slowly.

I miss the good old uncomplicated days of "Here is our game, no strings attached, thank you for purchasing it, enjoy".

I know, I just wish there was the alternative then going through these processes, instead of having to buy gold or credits or whatever to unlock content in these games, there would be just a "Whole package deal" for the same price as a regular game. In the end, these Free 2 Play games cost more then those.

Im not gonna disagree with you. Honestly the beta should have every class unlocked by default for testing purposes.

Maybe, I'm just glad I can throw a ton of money at them now to continue to support this project. I'd pay $200 for this game if I could.

I suppose the "store" functions are an important part of beta testing too though.

Spend $60 in their store and you'll probably be able to unlock everything. In that case, there is no real difference.
