True Detective - Season 2 - We get the Season we deserve - Sundays on HBO

Is it just me or did the orgy scene felt cut? If it wasn't then that was the biggest waste of opportunity HBO has done since I dont know when. I was expecting some devilworshiping/fucked up shit in a lavish and huge lounge or something, not just ordinary people having sex in rooms with closed doors. Didnt they hype this scene up with announcing it would be huge and that they hired pornstars?

Walking up to the window, hearing the conversation, breaking in and stealing all the papers... that shit was like a video game circa 2004. This show sucks. I'm going to watch it till its over but holy cow, 2 more episodes to go

Don't forget them going all Splinter Cell on the way up taking out the security guard.

Come on guys, the cop that gave the diamonds is totally this guy :

He is the definition of fishy on screen, but perhaps I'm biaised after seeing Intruders lol.

I like how Stan's getting even more characterization now than when he was alive. It's reaching Austin Powers levels of hilarity.

We're definitely getting a prequel starring Stan, he is already legendary.

Aside from the last 10 minutes that was another really boring episode. The music at the end didn't work for me at all, though.

Gonna have to explain that to the audience straight up if that's the case. Seems way too convoluted to make sense due to the circumstances of the kids and all that. Cause that would assume he had something to do with the diamond robbery and their parents being executed. Seems a bit farfetched.

Also lol at the Lana Del Ray filter during Ani's flashbacks and the damn old Hollywood movie escape music.
One, it's just a theory.

Two, it's "far-fetched" that the corrupt mayor would do something corrupt for money? Nah.
Come on guys, the cop that gave the diamonds is totally [Lt. Burris].
Yes, as we already guessed four pages ago.

Pretty decent episode. Liked most of the stuff to do with the party. Some nifty direction in there and nice use of music. Felt really tense watching it unfold.
Hopefully the remaining two episodes are of a similar quality to hopefully finish out a lackluster season on a somewhat positive note.

I can't see all these loose leads being tied up. Every villan just seems like a patsy with the big international corporation getting away with?...what ever it is they're planning.

Yeah IMO they're going to catch the killer but the big corporate machine behind the whole thing will go free. Just like last season where they never resolved the larger conspiracy. That is all I expect of Pizzaman at this point.

I'm no expert on these things, but doesn't it seem that the "story" takes a back seat to character development? I don't know if it's by design, or because I don't give a damn about the plot, but it's almost force-fed it's so obvious.

Or instead of going all 'meta' we use Occam's razor: this season sucks because it sucks in the absolute.

Exactly. I wasn't even all that thrilled with season one so season two didn't have a high bar to clear. Season two of True Detective will easily end up near the top of the list of awful shows I've watched in 2015 and I sit through some pretty bad stuff: Ray Donovan, The Walking Dead, The Strain.

Damn, that orgy was messed up. Some people complain about nudity and shit but to be honest I think they successfully created a very haunting atmosphere highlighting how fucked up that event is.

Poor Velcoro; had to realize that kid gives no shit about him and feels uncomfortable around him.

The whole Vaughn small town gangster storyline feels somewhat contrived and sort of irrelevant to the whole larger conspiracy plot... the worst part of this season is their huge focus on uninteresting character development that doesn't appear to enhance the appeal of the actual crime they are trying to solve in any way.

massive difference from last season where they did the same sort of drawn out plot character development thing with McConaughey and Harrelson but these actors and directors pulled it off much much better and they made it very interesting and fun to watch.

Yeah im of the opinion none of the over arcing plots matter at all and its more about how insignificant the mains are in the grand scheme. The cops will stop Birdman and a couple corrupt senior heads will roll frank loses Everything and the power he thinks he has means nothing at all. Ray already lost everything soon to include his life...probably. And the Catalyst machine keeps on winning

Didn't Ray agree to rejoin this whole mess to get some help keeping his kid? What incentive does he have to continue down this path when the only card they played to pull him back in is gone?

Vaugh is consistently bad in all episodes so far. At least that's something he has going on for him.

I had given him a pass early on but as the show goes on, it feels like his acting is just getting worse.

He always does this face.

In every scene.

It doesn't help matters that he always has the worst lines compared to the rest of the cast.

How are we liking this in comparison to season 1? I haven't started season 2 yet, but I'm thinkin about it right now

Season 1 was one of the best seasons in TV history so compared to that it's not living up to the hype and there's a lot of issues with the writing here and there. Compared to other shows on TV, though? It's probably better than most things out there right now.

I like it more than a lot of people here, though. Lots of guys in here straight up hate it or have stopped watching it completely.

I'd say give it a chance but go in with the knowledge that it's no where near as good as season 1. Don't set yourself up for disappointment thinking it's as good as the first season.

It doesn't help either that he shares lots of screen time with Farrell, who is doing a great job. The contrast is just too much.

Kitsch is not very good, either.

I think the problem with this season is that season 1, what with no one having any expectations for it, set the bar so high that there was no way season 2 could ever measure up.

More like this season is average at best and season 1 was my favorite season of TV ever.

That's how I feel anyway. Currently rewatching season 1 to compare.

Season 2 of Twin Peaks is even worse than season 2 of True Detective. Season 2 of Twin Peaks is the worst shark jump I've ever seen, and is one of the worst seasons of television ever made. (Except for the last episode.)

You are not wrong at all. That episode with the ferret was one of the worst things I've seen on TV coming from the greatness of Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2. However, I'm in the camp that the ending elevates Season 2 just a bit.

It also helps to skip those shit episodes.

I watched season 1 and fucking fell in love with the show but stopped watching season 2 when
they thought they saw a UFO
. It got too dumb there and other stuff came up so I just stopped watching it.

I need to give it another chance and re-watch/finish the show.

Getting the guy who gave Vaughn's character the name of the dude who thought raped his wife.

He probably just wants to get killed too.

Sure, but that name has zero to do with the investigation he got roped into. he could do his weird name-search vigilante thing and not play Hitman with the guards at this whole orgy scene because that thread is not related to the other at all.

I dunno, it just seems that his character is involved with Paul and Ani for no reason at this point other than that it makes for decent TV

there's like a badge of honor earned when you climb past the post-Laura Palmer stuff and survive the James episodes. You become a better person for it, and in the last 2-3 episode Lynch rewards you for your patience by giving you the ending you deserve.

It gets worse. I won't lie to you about that. However, the last two or three episodes (can't remember) are the best episodes in the show IMO.

This episode was like two separate halves, or maybe thirds.

First 40 mins or so=the usual mediocrity.

Frank making the most boring negotiations ever. I don't care how many days they can run X, or how much of a cut you do or don't get. Christ.

Ani knife training with her sister there, talking...what is this? Am I supposed to like this? Am I supposed to think Ani is a badass? Because it feels more like she taught herself how to throw shuriken in middle school.

Oh, I see--they were hanging their hat on that one, because she slices a dude up in the same episode. Sigh.

Velcoro is still most entertaining, but his scenes are tonally so weird, I have no idea what I'm supposed to think. Should I be laughing when his son wants to watch Friends and ignore his father? Am I supposed to think he's scary when he talks to the locked up rapist? Because the rapist was in such a confused stupor that it sucked the wind out of the moment for me.

I really liked most of the orgy scene, simply because it felt like a rare glimpse into the show when it hits on all cylinders. I think the music was perfect--maybe out of place for the series, but that's not saying much when most of this season feels like its been ambient droning. The scene wasn't perfect and Ani's hallucinations felt convenient/contrived, although I think McAdams pulled off the emotional/psychological impact.

So now it's fairly clear that she was abused? Sexually, most likely? Still fearing how this ties into her sexual preferences.

I like how Stan's getting even more characterization now than when he was alive. It's reaching Austin Powers levels of hilarity.

Hey guys, did you know that Stan was a good guy? In case you weren't sure, here's his weeping widow, talking about how good Stan was, and here's his fatherless son, about to be told how good he is.

Man, that Stan!

Seriously, though, those scenes would actually mean something if I cared about Stan OR his family. But I don't.

From the AV Club:

“Work the girls and the parties, and you work the diamonds,” D.A. Davis tells Ani and Paul, reiterating the approach they settled on in the previous episode.

These retreads pad out the episode, making it feel longer than it is without adding anything. Athena warns Ani she won’t be able to bring a phone or weapon into the secret party; another scene burns time while Ani relates that to Paul and Ray. Paul learns the details of the Sable Fine Jewelers’ heist first from a working detective, then from a retired cop. And this despite True Detective’s tendency to cut to and away from conversations as they unfold. Plenty of repeated exposition could be elided in these cuts, but the show doesn’t do it. It’s plodding where it needs to be fleet and vague where it needs to be precise.

Man, this season is really frustrating. It's not wall-to-wall terrible, there are moments/scenes with a hint of greatness, but on a whole it is so half baked. It's frustrating seeing these glimmers of a great show, it feels like they really should've taken another year to make this something special.

Just because they both have red hair?

Because Frank himself says that someone in his organization passed the info on to him--and yes, because he has red hair. It makes a lot of sense that Blake wanted to cover his ass after he found out it was a cops wife he abused. And we know Blake is crooked and has high connections.

Birdman is probably Burris.

I didn't like the episode, but at least the final 10-15 minutes moved us along finally. While I was watching the first 30 minutes or so I said to myself no wonder the finale is gonna be almost 90 minutes, they are gonna do all the plot movement in the final episode.
