I think it's pretty clear that VV is the weakest link so far. Hard to take seriously when youre supposed to and cartoonish at times, he just seems like a fish out of water this season.

Mind you, the character probably wouldn't work so well even in a capable actor's hands given the way he is written but it becomes all the more harder to try and accept him when VV just seems to have the same puzzled look 90% of the time.

I think he is supposed to be a fish out of water though. I think that is the point. He is a cog in the wheel trying to make his break and things are getting all fucked up around him and his bosses are showing their power over him and his limited ability to do anything.

So who was that "Paul" fucker that Vince Vaughn came up on on the highway? I couldn't tell if it was:

1. Russians beat the shit out of him, and Vince was tailing him.
2. Vince paid dudes to beat the shit out of him and speak Russian, and Vince was tailing up.

I thought it was a pretty good episode. I love the tone of the episodes. Everything feels seedy. LA is an interesting place and definitely has a seedy feel to it so I'm glad that comes across on the show. It really does feel like an old crime show, just creepier.

It's pretty obvious that Woodrugh is closeted, IMO, and it's the same conclusion that Sepinwall's made.

1. Couldn't get it up for his girlfriend.
2. Anger at an open gay man in public.
3. Looking longingly at the gay and lesbian couples freely out on the streets.
4. Checking out the male prostitute on the corner.

Between "he's closeted" and "he's a sexual abuse victim that wants to gaybash," I'm going with the former.

hmm, seems a bit reaching imo

could turn out true, but I think he's pretty clearly just a deeply troubled person after his blackwater shit

Dude, that was a total check-out. There are a lot of signs though, He never wants to stay with his GF, the viagra, the insecurity about a dude coming onto him, and whatever that was with the guy getting out of the car. I mean, maybe he's not, but it seems pretty obvious it's leading down that road, to me.

All the signs are obvious, yes, but the show last season turned things on it's head, so I'm not jumping to conclusions.

Again, I'm holding to the idea that something happened at Black Mountain that made him into what he is.

I think his character is using that as an excuse. There was obviously an...odd, likely sexual past with his mom that was being hinted at also.

I mean if a guy staring intensely, almost longingly at the openly gay people roaming the streets freely and openly isn't a metaphor, I don't know what the fuck one is haha.

It seemed pretty obvious when both of his big social scenes involved homosexuality. One, his public vocal aversion to it without ever being prompted and then when he is alone following intensely the homosexuals he sees.

Seemed pretty on the nose tbh.

HBO didn't need to go overboard with blurring the DP vid. This is HBO.

I'm not a big Vaughn film fan, but I think he's been fine so far. The story he tells at the beginning of the episode held my attention. It went a good amount of way to humanizing a guy who's on the wrong side of the tracks, yet is trying to run a semi-legit business venture.

yeah, even the fat detective was like wtf is wrong with you when he was telling him the story about the guy hitting on him and wanting to punch him. That scene convinced me that he was trying to push his heterosexuality way too hard, which usually is a sign that he's probably insecure and uncertain about something.

Better episode than the first and dang wasn't expecting that ending. Though I doubt he's dead. Would be waste if they offed Colin Farrell so soon.

A theory I've read is that (season 1 spoilers)
Paul was a student in one of the Tuttle schools
. That would explain the hidden past and tie it together with the first season. Didn't Pizzaman say it would connect to the first one in some way?

He says a lot of things, like how there won't be the Yellow King but I KNOW BETTER

YOU CAN'T FOOL ME PIZZA

I thought all of the Seasons were to be separate narratives from one another?

I don't recall him ever saying anything about tying them together.

Aye, makes sense. I vaguely recall seeing there will be a link like how American Horror Story seasons have some connections but I'm probably wrong.

edit: do we know who is directing the next episodes?

Agreed, it would make it feel like a cheesy shock moment if that's the case.
I actually think it would be a bold choice if they go through with it. After all we have to look at this through the lens of a 8 hour movie. Which is what this is.

Kill the character most like the violent, damaged alpha-male trope we saw last season and leave the closeted gay guy and the woman as your focal points.

I don't think Vince Vaughan has been bad at all acting wise. The writing for his character on the other hand.....not the best.

I'm not sure what it is, but that Ep2 opening scene is rough.

This season has been the opposite of S1 for me: it falters with the moody, ambient, character-building scenes and excels (or is at least most interesting) in its procedural element. So far I don't really care about the characters, but when the plot moves, the show is enjoyable.

I guess it could be bold, depends if the show ends up suffering a lack of interesting characters later on because of his offing.

If he isn't dead I hope he's not out of action too long. He's a piece of shit, but I think he's the most interesting character on the show at this point.

I don't think he's dead, just because there are
trailer shots that we haven't seen yet with him
. Unless they go crazy with
flashbacks or something, he's alive.

EDIT: Also remembering those
BTS shots of him and Taylor Kitsch in a police shootout/raid.

He should just be dead.

I said earlier that the shows premier had so many issues--Velcoro's obvious bentness being ignored, his beating up of a bullies family, too many POV's, not a single damn reason why viewers should care about the murder of Casper...

And then in episode 2 the fact that he can't seem to have a happy ending. He's a pawn to Vaughns character and he can't get out from under it. He's known to be crooked by his peers. He knows that the kid he cares about isn't his. And he said in the bar already: too late for all of that. Too late for everything. Redemption, women, everything.

His death would be awesome. Kitsch can fill the roll just fine. Let it be him and Antigone hunting down this Hotline Miami killer and minimize Vaughns scenes because he's terrible.

It's called reaction formation. Converting unwanted thoughts or feelings into their opposite; in this case his homosexual feelings manifest as homophobia.

i dont even remember the scene with kitsch staring at a gay couple. someone remind me?

also pizzamans dumb line of the episode:

Ray: “You know that expression about flies in honey?”
Ani: “What the hell do I want to do with a lot of flies?”
Ray: “Without flies, you can’t fly fish.”

smh

Dear god no.

Kitsch is fumbling through his scenes, only reason why more people aren't shitting on him is because of his limited screen time and Vaughn also being awful. Going from Colin Farrell to Taylor Kitsch would be the most epic downgrade.

Final warning on this:
A couple of quick notes:

- Please spoiler tag any and all preview/promo discussion. This includes teasers, trailers, set photos, etc... Yes, we will ban people for this if they continue to do it.
- There is a wide variety of opinions on the show, and everyone that's watching is welcome to participate in discussion. However, please refrain from blanket statements about "people that love/hate the show" and any personal attacks directed at your fellow posters. If you disagree with someone and want to engage them, take the time to refute their points rather than insulting them.

Thanks for your cooperation, and enjoy the show....or enjoy hatewatching it. Whatever floats your boat.

It's more like a stomach shot. A pistol would probably not killed him.
But a shotgun.. I dunno man.

In the realm of TV, yeah he should be flat out dead. His character was such a huge, crooked asshole that it seems poetic that he was given a "vacation".

i dont even remember the scene with kitsch staring at a gay couple. someone remind me?

Woodrugh was at a hotel across from a gas station after getting into an argument with his GF.

You see a couple people walking drunkenly through the station, one couple wearing rainbow fur boots, and another getting out a car(presumably is a male prostitute)

Dear god no.

Like I mentioned in my first comment, it's either intentionally wooden or it's bad acting. I'm inclined to believe its intentional.

SPOILER:

If you were in the other thread and saw the set pictures it's obvious he isn't dead unless they cut out a lot of scenes that showed him in totally different settings that haven't been shown yet in the first two episodes.

Kitsch is best when he doesn't have to brood 100% of the time. He has a specific type of charisma. Tim Riggins worked because he wasn't a tortured soul ALL of the time.

Hoping he gets to do some more with his character soon, because it's not really working for me right now.

Colin better NOT be dead. He's the most interesting character on the show. Rachel and Taylor fucking suck right now. Not looking forward to seeing Colin dead!

Taylor Kitsch remains superfluous, but Ray and Ani were working pretty well this episode, and they have a nice suspicious/uneasy chemistry. I'm really liking Ani and her skepticism towards all the bumbling buffoons in Vinci (and Rachel McAdams is looking great but that's neither here nor there).

Ray's not dead. If he were shot with a pistol he could be (especially after that second shot) but beanbags/rock salt/birdshot would knock him around a bit but not kill him, especially with him being hit in the chest.

Kitsch is supposed to be somewhat broken in how he acts in that his character gives off this fake appearance but isn't that good at hiding how fucked up he is. He's doing fine.

The problem is again Vaughn's character in that the brooding scenes from him come off as overacted such as the stain scene in addition to his overbearing dialogue. Not to mention Vaughn seems completely incapable of being threatening or scary like when he's the character and telling his men to get the gang together again. His acting doesn't have a scary edge to it for being a former crime boss.

Farrell and McAdams are obviously the best but Farrell's scene with the mother was outstanding on his part.

Can any one explain the porn scene that Mcadams watch?
HBO Asia remove that part and I can only hear the sound of the moan.

Would most of you be upset/annoyed if the Colin scene was a fake out? As I said yesterday, much of the talk is around how ballsy the decision was. How shocking it was to kill off a lead that early etc.

Would you guys be annoyed with a writing decision that kept him alive?

I've purposely avoided spoilers. So I'm just asking hypothetically. I'm just interested how you guys would react. I kind of feel like most audiences are annoyed with fake outs at this point.

I would be annoyed that they went for a 'shock' cliffhanger like this in the first place. That's usually a hallmark scene the writer is on fumes.
