True Detective - Season 2 - We get the Season we deserve - Sundays on HBO

Did you not watch season 1? It is jam packed with similar gems.

The pessimist/nihilist dialogue in S1 was written better, paced better (after all, it was only 1-2 characters saying it most of the time), and delivered better. I do think S1 had some clunkers, but it was far and away better than what we have in S2 so far.

Pizzaman sucks cause he didn't bring Birdman back. Like, what if instead of this ridiculous shootout, we got the following:

Team of cops go after their suspect in the dead of night. Break in. There's Birdman, standing over a gunned down gangbanger. Cue Birdman's escape and their hunt for him/her through the dank and dirty streets in the rain. Birdman leads the cops into gangster territory, cue a violent shootout where he escapes in the chaos. The Vinci PD just close the case by saying the banger did it and then fuck over the three leads by saying they led the cops into an ambush.

I would have been so down for this.

Yeah. The thing with Vince is: I think he has the look of a smug criminal who has his hands in many different boxes. But the way he is portrayed with stuff like that.. and it doesn't help that a lot of his dialogue sounds way too sophisticated for someone in his position.

Yup. It also doesn't help that, in the same episode where he's "intimidating" a bunch of people, he gets his lunch stolen by showboaty ex-boyfriend dude (or whoever that guy was).

Someone compared him to Stringer Bell in The Wire, but String was actually likable and legit intimidating, even if he was being humiliated on the business side of things.

The scene was so fucking goofy. I'm surprised this is the first time it's getting mentioned in this thread

Some story stuff feels a bit off, disjointed or something. Other than that, pretty pretty good episode. That shootout and the result were great. Velcoro shaking was cool.

Going by the previews:
I do wonder how long of a time jump it is. The shootout is like the worst police shootout in US history, and they were the leads on it. That's like congressional hearings level of fuckup, no matter how "at fault" any of them were.

Well,

Ray's shaved his mustache, but kept the greasy hair.

So you know he's cleaned up some.

Also, Jesus Christ, that literally was the worst police involved massacre ever. It's like the exact opposite of the when Rust and Marty chased down LaDoux, when they faked the action hero shit, hahahaha.

I think it might have been better had the cops run into Frank's men trying to raid that building at the same time, instead of bad Mexican dude just going on a shooting spree for no real reason.

It could have gone down like the final act of Children of Men.

Also I thought Kitsch acted well in the morning after, up until Velcoro picks him up.

That's exactly what I thought was going to happen: a three-way firefight.

It would have been a little contrived but might have been fun. I don't know that it would necessarily have been better than what we got, since we don't really know what the aftermath looks like.

Right, the fact that the mayor probably called him to warn him adds a wrinkle, but it makes Frank's scenes leading up to that pointless. I figured that's why Pizzaman came up with a reason to keep Frank's number one guy at the Casino.

While this season is doing some interesting things character wise, it's missed the mark pretty terribly with the overall plot and pacing. Throw in the inconsistent performances and direction and it's easy to see why S2 doesn't look so hot standing next to S1, where the sum of its parts were not only better from top to bottom, but were woven together in a way that was considerably more meticulous, cohesive, and dare I say artful than anything we've seen from the show this season -- or most TV shows for matter. Critics would often compare True D to film last year , so it is sorta interesting how the show is running into the same types of problems you typically see with sub-par sequels to great movies.

That said I still want to see where everything/body ends up. Plus we should have a classic Lera Lynn EP by season's end, so there's that.

Still loving this more and more with each episode.

But Taylor Kitsch's character (Woodrugh) is disappointing me. I'm still stubbornly convinced that he isn't a bad actor with the right material, so I just don't think Pizzaman has given him a ton to work with. And I may be forgetting something, but it doesn't feel like his subplot is trying in well enough to everything else imo.

Vince Vaughn is the key to all of this if we can get Vince Vaughn working. Cause he's a funnier character than we've ever had in the show.
It's like poetry, so that they rhyme. Every stanza kinda rhymes with the last one.

I find myself caught up in it all, but I'm not sure if I'm convinced there's more to it, subtle clues, that I'm missing, or I'm just waiting for it to kick off.

S1 had two things that S2 seems to be missing. Leads that you loved hearing what they had to say, and intrigue surrounding the big bad that could be out there. You watch S1 and it's like there's eyes on you all the fucking time. Combined with the way the story is told, with IA asking questions etc, you're constantly questioning what the fuck happened?

I'm hoping they are going to tie the hippy culture into it, because for a starter it seems a few of the major players have roots back at the place, but it really needs a sinister edge to it beyond just politics and corrupt officials trying to make a buck and cover up what they're up to.

It's like the show is caught in two minds. Half of it wants to go one way, and the other wants to go the other. At the moment, I feel like it's not doing both that great. I'm hoping it all turns upside down and inside out.

Felt like Pizza man was hoping for a big ol tracking shot for the end of this episode.

While still not on season 1's level, I feel like this season has gotten a lot better since the first 2 episodes.

I think I liked the two leads better. Not that four can't work, but I'd probably be more engaged with an increased focus on Rachel McAdams and Farrell. Vince Vaughn's story is kinda interesting, but I dunno, not sure it's needed. And again, I actually like Taylor Kitsch, but I'm just not sure where his character is going, if anywhere.

And I should probably rephrase my previous post lol. I wouldn't saying I'm loving this season, but I like it well enough. Has me anticipating each new episode at the very least.

I feel like if Kitsch was doing Frank's role and Vaughn was doing Paul's role, this would be infinitely more entertaining.

I don't know who Paul is but if he plays Colin farrell's not-son then yes, it would be much more entertaining if Vaughn played him.

Or more entertaining if Vaughn played nobody in this show because he's really not good.

The whole last scene was really poorly done. Everything from the AK sounding like it was from CoD, infinite ammo, horrible getting shot acting, bad CGI, stupid freeze frame, shit was just bad.

It just felt amateurish.

I mean, fuck, this looks ridiculous.

Something this stupid looking would've never made it into season 1.

How great would it be if the entirety of the next episode was just them all standing around the carnage throwing up and crying and shit like it looked like they were about to do for 5 min

LOL, the inability to remember the names of any of these shit characters should become a MEME for S2.

Maybe change the Thread title to something along the lines of can't remember names.

lol.

I'm not going to lie. Up until now I only knew Ray's name. I was kind of sure Taylor played a character named Paul but wasn't 100%. I didn't know Vaughan played a character named Frank but I feel like I should have known that.

Just caught the episode.

Yeah, it's still average at best. Having 4 leads was a big mistake, too much shit going on and juggling scenarios. If this was Season 1 it would probably get more of a pass but it's clearly not going to be in the same league as Season 1 at any point unless the second half is just downright ridiculous.

Even this skirmish at the end kinda sucked. Again, compared to S1E4's remarkable shootout, this was nowhere even fucking close to that. Fukunaga just embarrassing Podeswa.

Does a persons head flap around like that when shot in the torso?

Just came across a theory on Frank's wife on Reddit that really made me think. I'll put it in spoilers I guess

Is Frank's wife a cop or a mole? It would explain why they are focusing so much on her inability to get pregnant, and Frank himself said his sperm is still all good. Maybe she is just taking the pill because she doesn't want to have a child with the person she is taking down

Hasn't he been legit for years and years and him losing his money is what brought him back to crime?

I consider myself to be a person of at least average intelligence and for the life of me I could not tell you what the fuck is happening on this show. Like I don't even understand why they were even going after the guy at the end of episode 4
