My question is why does he feel the need to ask this in the middle of two hearings? Can't he just ask someone from the IC privately?

I think I remember a story where around the time of the hacking scandals some Kaspersky engineers were taken away by Russian authorities never to be seen again. So either there is suspicion in the US the virus scanner tool is a Russian spy tool or the reverse, or both.
