Trump Fires James Comey

Yeah, Obama deserved to win in 2012 but he was dead wrong to mock Romney's concern over Russia's beligerent behaviour.

Well at the time it did seem silly. From 2012 to 2014 Russia massively ramped up its questionable activity and went all in from 2015 until the present. At the time Romney said it, it was an unquestionably outlandish theory, but history has vindicated him to some extent. I also think the important thing is that Romney got the Who right, but if I recall he was way off on the How and Why.

At least it makes Trump look guilty as hell, of course he's the only person with that much power to be too stupid to foresee that.

Holy shit 'Murica.

It astounds me how brazen and transparent the Trump admin is. Surely all of this shit will catch up with him at some point?
It won't. We don't live in a just world. Shittier people are getting away with worse everyday. Honestly, I don't see why anyone would have any hope left at this point.

I don't really think you have much choice.

You guys either actually do something that involves real action and help to influence the necessary change to occur or you give up.

:), i don't think Comey needs the "Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing" thread in OT. He probably gets offers left and right because of his connections alone.

10 bucks says a Gaffer is applying for a 'James Comey' alt account as we speak :)

Wow. Raging twatwhistle Julian Assange tweets that he expects the FBI to start leaking... and most responses think the leaks will be about Hillary's emails. Just wow.

Because they've normalized the Russia story as a non-issue.

My family, who believes the words of Trump that it clouds their reason -- the AHCA, in their eyes, is 10000% better than the ACA, despite all of the information saying it's bad; it's good because Trump says pre-existing conditions won't be an issue -- think the issue here is who leaks information, not the information itself.

I imagine many Trump marks are the same. Couldn't care less about the connections, but care too deeply about "law and order" when it comes to how this surfaces.

I just can't fathom that the Republicans are betraying your country for RUSSIA. Like, after years of Cold War, Trillions spend on military defense and proxy wars, millions dead because of this...they sell out for the boogeyman of their own propaganda for peanuts and cheap hookers.

Should this blow over the political systems, selection process for public positions and the freaking constitution need a complete overhaul, Germany-after-WW2 style. The constitution of the Weimar Republic was not strong enough to stand against the violent unrest and later the Nazi takeover...and it was more modern than the US constitution. Do to yourself what you did to us after the war and force a multi-party governing body to create a strong constitution designed with the help of international experts and independant oversight over the result. Please.

You have to applaud the complete and utter ignorance in which Trump lives. Firing Comey hours before meeting the Russian foreign minister at the WH? You have to be truly detached from reality to think that's a good idea.

Trump had grown angry with the Russia investigation — particularly Comey admitting in front of the Senate that the FBI was investigating his campaign — and that the FBI director wouldn't support his claims that President Barack Obama had tapped his phones in Trump Tower.

Bipartisan criticism of Comey had mounted since last summer after his lengthy statement outlining why he was closing the investigation into Clinton’s private email server.

But the fallout seemed to take the White House by surprise. Trump made a round of calls around 5 p.m., asking for support from senators. White House officials believed it would be a "win-win" because Republicans and Democrats alike have problems with the FBI director, one person briefed on their deliberations said.

Instead, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told him he was making a big mistake — and Trump seemed "taken aback," according to a person familiar with the call.

By Tuesday evening, the president was watching the coverage of his decision and frustrated no one was on TV defending him, a White House official said. He wanted surrogates out there beating the drum.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out a decade from now that firing Comey was a show of loyalty to Putin ahead of Trump's visit with Lavrov.

It's okay though, Trump is sending a certified letter he announced right after this firing that totally proves he has no ties with the Russians!! Isn't that great!?

This meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister is purely coincidence of timing.

It's beautiful isn't it? I guess (although not American so I don't know) that because FBI is not judicial, then it comes under the remit of the government and therefore you can do (if you are Trump), whatever you want to do.

Not exactly. The Director is the only politically appointed position in the FBI as far as I can tell. President chooses, senate confirms. The investigations continue just fine without Comey at the helm.

It remains to be seen if Trump can get a friend confirmed for the position, much less what that person could actually do about the current investigations without it causing more damage to Trump than the investigations themselves.

Comey needed to go after the shit he pulled before and after the election. I think this is one of the few good things Trump has done so far---even if his intentions are questionable.

They've been smitten with Putin ever since he started going after gay people and pushing "Christian values." Throw in the image of a masculine strongman who forces other people to do what he wants and you have an ideal that the Republicans would love to match.

I wanted Comey's ass to be fired for that, too, but saying that Trump's intentions are questionable is giving Trump far too much credit. There are so many reasons the excuses don't hold up that it's clearly a clumsy attempt at disguising Trump's true motives.

It wasn't silly at all. Even back in 2012 Russian aggression was already significantly ramped up. You can look at the invasion of Georgia in 08 as the real start of Putin's aggressice behaviour towards the West. By 2012 intelligence agencies were taking note of the Kremlin's campaign of disinformation and hybrid warfare against NATO and the EU. Romney may have been a twat but he was 100% right WRT Russia during that presidential campaign.

This is what I don't get: by all accounts, they sorted this dismissal out in less than a week and the reasons given are flimsy at best. There is no replacement on standby.

I can see why Trump wants to get rid of the guy but why not ask him to resign 'for family reasons' and get a substitute ready to go?

Only things that make sense are an ego thing, like Trump taking umbrage at something the man said or did... or a panic move, with the White House being tipped Comey was going to make a big move in the collusion investigation.

So today is the day we get to watch Repubs and their low-info voters try to turn Trump's authoritarian impulses into status-quo.

They are all fucking scum. May all the worst things in life happen to them, sooner rather than later.

Amazing...

So it didn't even cross their mind that firing the guy who is leading an investigation on him might look a little suspicious

I don't give Trump the benefit of stupidity anymore. Because his shortsighted impulses are like a jackhammer. And as inelegant as jackhammers are, they're also effective.

What does it say about this stupid man that the American government has succumb to his stupidity?

People with sense better start approaching Trump like he's a criminal fucking mastermind.

He's not a criminal mastermind. He simply wields enough authority to get away with what he wants.

Not only l do they sell out to the boogeyman, Trump's supporters among the population don't seem to bat an eyelid, even though I wager there's a huge amount of overlap between those people and those who have been spewing "damn commies" bullshit for decades at anyone who even remotely promotes basic socialist ideas (read: most of Europe). Stunningly sad and ironic.

It doesn't matter. Trump will face zero consequences from this, and he knows it. He can do whatever he wants.

I would understand a softening of the official stance on Russia and lessening sanctions, but possible treason? No.

Men get old. Men are weak. What good is war and ideology when you can get money and power and hookers

But literally everyone would be willing to pay up. VW would give everyone congressman that helps to make the emission scandal go away enough money to buy more power and hookers. You need to br seriously fucked in the head to take orders from cartoon villain wannabe Putin. Urgh.

On Trump being surprised: No words.

But this and Brexit in contrast to the French election should be a huge fucking signal to everyone with half a brain (or less, maybe) that FPTP and effecticly two party systems have no place in a modern country. It does not work as intended*.

*if you're especially cynical and postulate that those systems were designed to rob the common man of influence in favour of corporations and oligarchs, okay, they work perfectly; but both UK parliament and the USA were founded in a totally different era than today which is IMHO the problem, not a conspiracy at their inception

Edit:

Exactly! One shouldn't be surprised after the GOP almost literally called Obama a communist-nazi from the Simpsons, I guess.

I still dont know what I find more worrying. That a man of this much power talks like a child with silly insults and crying when things dont go his way or the amount of people that seem to love that he is like this and see it as fine.
I try to see both as one big shit-combo.

Look at how Comey was fired.

Via TV, and at a large inconvenience to himself.

Of course it's an ego thing.
