And yet yours is the most inconsequential post on this very page. Impressive.

Here read . Educate yourself on why and why this is the case and what treaties have been made . Stop whittling down complex international issues to one line statements . If that was the way the world worked we would all be bombing each other ... A point often made in this thread has been why will china retaliate in any way .. it will harm itself . Most countries are willing to harm themselves if they believe it won't result in their destruction when it comes to hot topic political issues ...
Imagine if tomorrow Russia decided to annex 1km of Alaska . Does it make sense for the us to fight them ? It's fucking 1km of Alaska . Fighting Russia harms the us . Both suffer so us should just back down . But you don't because borders are respected . Similarly Treaties norms and understandings between international players are respected etc etc .
You can't boil this shit down to one line if you do it either shows you're super super well read or not well versed on the topic .i doubt it's the former .
This coming from somebody that thought a wall would block drugs from getting into the country...10 pages over a phone call lol
You don't understand what this means, do you?10 pages over a phone call lol

BEIJING (AP) - China's foreign minister hopes US relations won't be "interfered with or damaged" after Trump speaks with Taiwan leader.
You're reinforcing the broader point I'm making yes go to war for it because such aggression so lead to larger things and are interpreted as such . Similarly china can perceive this as us not honouring prior agreements . And can escalate even if it harms both us and Chinese economies .Yes, I made a flippant reply to a flippant comment, that doesn't mean that I'm uneducated about the actual issues. Saying that others need to educate themselves (implying that you yourself are "more" educated on the subject, thus the opposing opinion is less valid) is a weak debating mechanism. If you disagree with a specific point, disagree with it, don't just assume that your viewpoint is the only correct one, and others need to educate themselves with it.
As for your point about Alaska, I would say of course, you have to go to war over it, but I respect your right to disagree with me, and wouldn't say that you need to educate yourself over Russian aggression (maybe a link to the annexation of the Crimea?).
China has responded to Donald Trump's phone call with the president of Taiwan, calling it a "small trick" from Taipei.
The US president-elect risked a diplomatic row with Beijing with the phone conversation - a major departure from decades of US policy in Asia.
Beijing firmly views Taiwan as part of a single Chinese nation and the US and Taiwan have not had formal relations since 1979.
China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, said he hoped Beijing's relations with the US would not be "interfered with or damaged" after the call.
Calling it "just a small trick by Taiwan", he said he thought it would not change longstanding US policy toward China.
Mr Wang said the so-called "one-China policy" was the cornerstone of US-China relations and that Beijing hoped that foundation would not be "interfered with or damaged."
Not unexpected. China has literally nothing to gain and a LOT to lose by going ballistic over this right now.
Really? The diplomatic consequences for meeting the Dalai Lama will be far worse than taking a phone call from the Taiwanese President.
Chances are, Trump didn't even know any of this.
Looks like they're de-escalating it from their end by characterizing it as a trick by Taiwan.

I wasn't tricked. I really spoke to him!
Thank god. Everything about this is ridiculous but everyone is more adult and informed than Trump.

I HIGHLY doubt that. Standing up to China has been one of his major planks since the very beginning (hell, before he even threw his hat in the ring) and he has major business interests in the region. This move didn't even surprise me one bit, given what he's been saying on his 'victory lap.'
I'm more worried about Trump going ballistic.
Diplomacy is chess but he wants to play hungry hungry hippos.
Trump: what did you mean I was tricked? *reaches for phone*They probably fear trumps doubling down too
If there's one thing that I think the GOP would eventually pull the trigger on getting rid of Trump in an impeachment, it'd probably be foreign affairs stuff. Even if Pence is the main governing man in the equation, the fact that he'll have a direct contact line to foreign parties and already doing shit like this is pretty troubling.
Thank god. Everything about this is ridiculous but everyone is more adult and informed than Trump.
This is one of the more disappointing threads I've seen here in a long time. Taiwan is a liberal democracy. It is independent in every sense of the word. If you guys actually believe in any of the ideals you pretend to here than this thread is good news.
Fuck everyone in this thread quivering at the "might" of China in spite of what is right.
Nothing is more adult than everyone pretending like Taiwan doesnt exist so the Chinese government can contiue to save face
#TeamFreeTaiwan
Also #TeamOneKorea (so Japan can get upset as well)
And then China doesn't even reactThis is one of the more disappointing threads I've seen here in a long time. Taiwan is a liberal democracy. It is independent in every sense of the word. If you guys actually believe in any of the ideals you pretend to here than this development is good news.

"Its going to be an interesting couple of years."For people who don't understand what the implications of this are (read: many people in this thread) listen to Fareed Zakaria on this for some context.
1) Taiwan is not under invasion.
2) Nobody wants to deal with millions of starving North Koreans.
And then China doesn't even react
I'm genuinely shocked that we didn't just have an instant total war with China over a phone call! Shocked!
In other news, it turns out that China aren't idiots after all and they know that the US are their largest and most important trading partner. Unless Trump is truly stupid, he knows it too. It's not n-dimensional chess but this was a ploy to see what kind of reaction he could provoke out of the Chinese. And, well, there wasn't really any. Because seriously, who the fuck actually thought a World War going to start over a phone call?
The idea that GAF would accept this one China policy in this day is crazy - the cognitive dissonce it requires is stunning considering GAFs stances on most issues
The world is not fair . Pick your battles . You like freedom and liberal democracies so much why not go to war and liberate china ?
Well yeah. Just pointing out that people overreactedThey will do nothing because they can do nothing.

He was probably hoping for a more vociferous response from China, quite frankly.
Well yeah. Just pointing out that people overreacted
Also, who the hell knows how countries will react to new crazy FP like this. Could be bad. Could be good. We'll have to see.
The worry wasn't over this, it's the fact he didn't know not to make the call in the first place. It's the fact he skips his daily security briefings. It's the fact he seems to be doing everything by the seat of his pants with no thought to consequences. At some point, if he keeps this shit up, he'll do something another country can't walk back. And he'll do it at a time when Obama won't be able to smooth things over for him anymore.
Foreign Policy is a 100+ man chess game and Trump only knows how to play Hungry Hungry Hippos. If that doesn't give you pause, it should.
There's a difference between you or I saying Taiwan should be independent and the United States saying it.

1) Could be, it's a renegade place after all
2) We are kinda dealing with millions from middle east, so why not a few North Koreans
Yes, Donald J. Trump, defender of liberal democracy, champion of human rights, advocate of the rule of law.
Boy do I have terrific bridges to sell you. The most beautiful bridges, believe me.
How did we get from having a phone call with the president of a liberal democracy to going to war with China?
Nice argument.
