Did anyone read the transcript of the conversation with Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz?

The man is a fucking moron.

I'm positive he had no idea what he was getting himself into, and he's just too stubborn to admit it.

EDIT: For posterity:

'Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif you have a very good reputation. You are a terrific guy. You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way. I am looking forward to see you soon. As I am talking to you Prime Minister, I feel I am talking to a person I have known for long. Your country is amazing with tremendous opportunities. Pakistanis are one of the most intelligent people. I am ready and willing to play any role that you want me to play to address and find solutions to the outstanding problems. It will be an honor and I will personally do it. Feel free to call me any time even before 20th January that is before I assume my office.'

trump sounds like a fuckin nigerian prince scammer irl

Please tell me that's just a joke.

lol, and some people have the gall to say that this is actually a super-smart and planned change in foreign policy through understanding the complexities regarding Taiwan and China.

In reality, we will have a foreign policy based on whatever is presented to Trump first.

It's also important to recognize the cost of that economy. China oppresses a lot of groups in the name of "one China", I don't think everyone should ignore the human cost just because they don't have to deal with it. Same for Israel and Saudi Arabia. I don't think Trump is an altruist but I couldn't be happier someone is actually breaking the silence on these issues. Should others not call out the US because Trump will throw a hissy fit? And he too, by a lot of people, is a crazy nationalist who would start WW3 over some stupid shit.

This is a good point. Other countries need to weigh their options and take a stand without fear if they need to in the case of Trump. I definitely wouldn't let him do whatever the hell he wants or bully the country if I were in their shoes.

Having a phone conversation with a foreign nation shouldn't provoke another country to fly bomber planes near our waters to "prove" a point.

Taiwan = ISIS?

Shouldn't and will are two entirely different things. Shouldn't happens in an ideal world. We don't have that.

This is what I think happened-

He unwittingly accepted the congratulatory call, faced a shitstorm, said it was intentional, planned and it indicates a departure from old foreign policy.

Now he's fucking stuck because he can't admit he was wrong. Get ready for 4 years of this, not only because he's an idiot who doesn't know anything about foreign relations, but he doesn't even want to learn.

It truly is something to behold.

You saw this countless times in the campaign. Said something absurd or untrue, just kept doubling down.

I don't support Trump. But this and other moves like it put the US on offense rather than defense.

Like it or not, Obama's FP legacy will be defined by his passivity and inaction. This could signal a positive shift on that front, IMO.

If by this you mean relative stability I don't see how that could possibly be a bad thing than the shit show of gambles we're looking at now. It isn't the elites, who are making these gambles, that will have to deal with the consequences. It will be the rest of us who will bear the totality of it while only they stand to benefit from it. Not sure how throwing away decades of FP work is supposed to be a positive shift for anyone. Surely it won't solve the Taiwan issue or promote any of our own interests.

He's got a very good brain, man.

Yes, it's real. It was so absurd that the Pakistani government released the transcript to rub it in India's face... At least that's what I read.

Trump is about as fake as it gets

He may know fuck all about foreign policy, but he's a great businessman!

Complex geopolitics is so simple when you're clueless about it.

That's tough talk for someone not responsible for other people's livelihood.

I meant bullying China

China created the problem in the first place by installing a puppet government. Not really bullying to reject their bad deeds. Problematic economically maybe but at worst it's accepting contested sovereignty, and best he's doing disenfranchised people a favor.

Holy shit, like his campaign speeches, there is absolutely zero substance. I still can't believe an army of moron voters has elevated this incompetent idiot to the position of president. He will be the most scorned POTUS ever, deservingly so.

"He tells it how it is. I could have a beer with him. He's says things in a way i can understand. I like nonsensical catch phrases".

Anyone from Taiwan here to shed light on how they feel about this? I'm not sure how good it is to be used as a 'bargaining chip' by trump and not knowing if he would actually back you if he ends up provoking any conflict. It just feels like he's setting up to blame China for anything and everything that could go wrong in his term.

Taiwan has been fucked over for decades as the result of a policy which was instilled for the exact same reason as Trump is trying to employ. The only reason the US's stance is One China in the first place is because Nixon used that as a bargaining chip to get China to the table on trade.

Why is the US so for democracy and freedom for people to choose their own governments except in this one little exception which seems to defy all logic, except when you consider that we're just scared of pissing China off?

Whether he has genuine interest in the people of Taiwan, or just wants to use this as a bargaining chip, or just wants to bolster his own ego by going head to head in a game of chicken with a bully, you can bet your ass the people of Taiwan, Vietnam, and all the other countries in the South China Sea that have been bullied and shoved around by China over the last 4 decades might have just woken up to the best news they've ever heard.

I'm probably not wrong in my assumption that this was the same lip service given to the Japanese prime minister in which Abe stated he was confident in Trump after his meeting with him.

America will be everybody's friend while being nobody's friend. It's like a game of Civ!

Yep, this is going to end in a trade war and global repression and possibly depression. I just hope actual violence doesn't spill over into Taiwan. But this is going to felt worldwide, because neither side will move an inch.

Lol "neither side will move an inch" come on son Trump flip flops daily

Public opinion is split. Some are happy that the issue has gained international recognition for a country whose visibility has long been suppressed by China, and others are scared that destabilizing the status quo into an unwinnable war may endanger the democratic freedoms that we currently already enjoy.

Yeah, all while the TPP was killed.

Spare us the fake concern for these people.

What alternative universe do you live in? The US is almost never on the side of democracy in other countries. WTF do you think the US was doing in Vietnam, helping them hold elections?

I'll take you up on that bet because people are face palming over this buffoonery. People are not stupid, they don't have faith the USA would back us up in a real fight and not just a pissing contest.

America elected Donald Trump, DONALD FUCKING TRUMP! Even kids here knows that's stupid. Why would people have confidence he isn't just going to shit the bed and make the rest of us clean it?

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. The US's presence in Vietnam was to aid the South (who wanted democracy) in their fight against the North (who wanted communism). Are you saying they didn't actually care about the South and had an alterior motive?

Yeah, all while the TPP was killed.

Spare us the fake concern for these people.

You'll have to clarify for me on how the TPP applies here. Also, my entire extended family are these people. So don't presume to know whether my concern is genuine or fake.

Trump will sell out Taiwan if he can get a great deal (Trump properties in Chinese cities). Trumps gonna push the chinese and they'll crack down on Taiwan and Trump won't care because he can say "I didn't back down"

That's tough talk for someone not responsible for other people's livelihood.

You can let Trump walk all over you and your livelihood or do something about it. That's common sense. Donald Trump, China, Russia, and so on can't do whatever they want to do. The question is who is going to be forced to fold?

As a small business owner who relies heavily on Chinese manufacturing, I am very very afraid of this man.

"They may take our lives, but they'll never take, OUR FREEDOM!!!!!!"

Too bad life isn't like Braveheart, countries with less power always have to work around countries with more power.

Your extended family is being bullied by China? In terms of TPP, which Trump opposed, there was a side agreement with Vietnam that required Vietnam to liberalize its workers rights.

Anyway, it is oxymoronic to say that supporting Vietnam (which this move has no indication of supporting--as Trump has made negative statements about Vietnam during his campaign) is supporting "democracy and freedom"--how is Vietnam democratic and free?

no way this is real

I forgot about that huff post editor's note:

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

They should have listed that before anything else in any Trump related article.

When trump responded to this controversy initially he hinted that he was even prepared to call China out on their conquests for the South China Sea's contested islands, of which Vietnam also lay claim to. So yes, they they are definitely interested in someone standing up to China
