Trump will ask for investigation into alleged voter fraud

This increasingly feels like something they're going to lie about and use to create voter suppression laws.

Of course it is. The fascists want to continue to suppress the votes of minorities and those who tend to vote Democrat. That it took people this fucking long to see how damn evil Republicans were baffles me.

Yeah I mean let's all be honest here, the GOP was going to introduce voter suppression laws regardless of this. In fact I'd say that ridiculous false claims like this that aren't true actually makes them more likely to get caught doing so, because the White House conducts a fake investigation and someone's gonna leak that shit.

The problem is this investigation isn't going to be "fake." The things he's specifically looking for, according to that tweet, are things we already know about from outside investigations. There ARE likely a couple million errors and outdated registrations out there, mostly from shoddy paperwork, people moving from one state to another but not being removed from the rolls of one state, or death. So they can do a real investigation into these things and find real information, as has already been done by outside researchers, and say "see, we told you so!" to justify more far reaching restrictions.

The problem is that these metrics are NOT in any meaningful way evidence of actual voter fraud or any real indication that literally any of these false registrations were used to cast improper ballots.

Big worry is that they will taint the results of the findings if this ever came to fruition. In fact I'm almost certain this is exactly what would happen.

This is going to find a decent number of people who are registered in multiple states, dead or have paperwork anomalies that lead to duplication on voter rolls, but no accounts of people actually VOTING. He'll point to it as "proof"

Yeah it's infuriating, and as even this thread proves it still seems like some people just don't get it and think this is an ego thing and not the calculated move that it is.

The only proof here is that he never had facts and real evidence of the voter fraud he is obsessed about and not because he cares about voter fraud but because he is so vain and can't accept the truth.

On the flip side, had there ever been an investigation on how many votes actually get suppressed by voting laws? Curious because so many people don't even vote at all, I wonder how significant suppression is.

The thing that infuriates me even more is the people who don't care how outright evil the Republicans/never bothered to listen or notice are people who have nothing to lose. They're mostly straight white somewhat well-off economically cis Christian moderates. They're the kind of Democrat that doesn't care about the horrors that minorities within their own party will face because they're so privileged to not see what's right there. They're the kind of person who in Nazi Germany wouldn't even bat an eye at Jews getting carted away.

"I'm still well, off, I got mine. Therefore the status quo is generally okay. Why are these minorities trying to tell me it's not? I don't understand. I could listen to learn but instead I'm going to tell them the status-quo is great and we need to vote by it. Why would we want to vote for something better? It's already better. Aren't you minorities well-off like me? How well off I am is proof that the status-quo is just fine!"

"Don't worry minorities, just fall in line, it's all going to be fine"

"Incremental change is the way, you'll get yours eventually. Just wait your turn and stop telling me about how everything isn't good at the moment. It would shatter my worldview and get me to confront the shit I'm turning a blind eye to because I don't want to rock the boat or examine issues in any nuanced sense of the word."

No. Fucking be our allies if you claim to be Democrats. Instead of that, I worry the overwhelming number of moderates who control the party are just going to let Republicans do whatever in the name of "political relevancy" because they don't want to challenge anything that these people do for fear of losing votes with moderates who tend to lean Republican. Going more right-wing is not the way. Fucking appeal to your base. Rather than doing that the Democrats will hang themselves by more or less allowing this voter suppression to happen. I'll be stunned if they actually stand up for once and realize what's going on. Eventually it'll be too late. I wonder how much they'll actually care when it reaches that point. I mean, they'll still be well-off. They probably still won't fucking get it.

Yeah you kind of nail it there.

To combat voter suppression I really, REALLY hope that by 2018 and 2020 we can educate and get more people eligible to vote. This is god damn serious.

Wouldn't it just be swell if he investigated the fraud and found out there was actual, substantial voter fraud during the 2016 election, but all cases of fraud were Trump votes? We'd never hear about it unless it leaked to the press, but it'd be yet another thing to demoralize Trump, who cares way more about image than substance to begin with.

Trump is getting so bad he is making his reelection just impossible in 2020.

Don't say this! Stop assuming he can't be re-elected! We saw how bad he was before this election yet he still got into office. We should be assuming he practically has a shoe-in for 2020 and instead be doing everything we can to prevent that. Anything is possible now.

People won't forget this. I sure won't. I'll vote against him like I did and will again.

This is the sort of stuff that makes me the most ill in a way. The blatant, direct assault on our democracy and the GOP will gleefully play along.

They're going to use this into an excuse to create tighter voting laws nationally. Just watch.

The GOP and this administration is very powerful at the moment, and they looking for any way they can to ensure that they can keep that power for the years to come.

We really should get #fakepresident going by citing all of the terrible shit he's done in the past and is currently doing. Please someone make this a thing. I don't use Twitter. :(

As much as I hate to defend Trump on something, I believe CNN misquoted him on that and were called on it.

Well to be fair, as I recall he didn't really make his point clear. He was going on about voting again, and not being clear about how you need to invalidate your mail in and vote in person.

In typical Trump fashion, he was just up there mumbling and griping about how the election was going to be rigged without actually thinking about consequences.

Another reason I think mail in voting will be a target of Trump's eventually damn him.

I hope you enjoyed 50 odd years of limited restrictions on voting, minorities. Trump and Sessions are going to make sure we go back to the good old days of voter disenfranchisement.

Also who in their right mind trusts Trump and the Republicans to lead this, in the age of Alternative Facts these assholes will just claim it and restrict voting rights and the dems are powerless to stop them.

Yeah it's infuriating, and as even this thread proves it still seems like some people just don't get it and think this is an ego thing and not the calculated move that it is.

It's a Hanlon's razor type of thing. Very likely not calculated. Conspiracy theorists are really bad at accepting emergent behavior and this can be dangerous. It's the same reason we look for agents of racism rather than looking that the fact that factors and institutions that aren't particularly constructed to be race-based, such as wanting better school options for your child, have devastating consequences on minority populations. Trump's not reading a "How to be a dictator book" he's simply exhibiting the same sorts of personality issues many dictators do, inability to handle criticism, paranoia, a need to feel loved. This in turn leads to things like needing tighter control, lashing out against dissenters, and aggrandizing your own achievements. You eventually start doubling down on those until past overreach looks more like the norm. That's how this has always worked, it doesn't have to be calculated, it's just putting that type of person into a position with power.

That's not enough though. He claims he won the popular vote. He needs to find millions. This isn't just a "voter fraud is a problem" issue. He thinks he won the popular vote.

This is a just a load of crap that the GOP will play along with so they can insert some new bill saying only such and such is allowed to vote now.

Stuff like this is what drives me crazy about Trump. He won the election yet he has to waste time and money on something so unimportant just to try and prove some sort of point. Same thing with the inaugural attendance. He is so thinned skinned. Should be interesting to see what other nonsense he wastes his time with over the next 4 years.

Trump is getting so bad he is making his reelection just impossible in 2020.

If he disenfranchises more minorities a republican victory is all the more likely, especially since us dumb white people will believe anything apparently. I can't believe the Democrats have to rely on minorities to save America from itself. They've more than earned their place in America.

Sure, but they've never really needed an excuse to push that shit through.

This will be nothing but bad. They may not even need to fudge numbers - simply interpret them in a specific way. They will find instances of dead people on the registration or people moving and thus being "registered" in two states as fraud. His supporters will love it and will go along with it. GOP and even liberal moderates in the center won't care enough to stop him.

Even though those registrations will show no evidence of actual voting taking place. He'll find "fraud" just true enough to continue the suppression with just enough support.

This will make 2018 impossible for Dems. And will make 2020 an even wider victory at the presidential level and GOP will erase the 2016 Dem House/Senate gains. It could also get some purple states or blue state legislatures to go red, giving the additional 2-3 states needed to have 3/4 of the states for constitutional amendments. At that point, the final nail is in the coffin for liberalism, progress, civil rights, etc., will be in place. And we'll be full on fascist, nationalist, and more racist than ever.

Yeah, pretty much. This is a manbaby who STILL can't let go of the crowd size thing. He will obsess over it.

I am not a conspiracy theorist, and I am not giving trump all the credit. If you look at republican history, recent history in NC, trumps accusation of voter fraud both before the election and now, the race to executive orders, there is a very clear and plain to see path here.

This has nothing to do with his ego and is instead part of the plan to create fertile ground for voter suppression. This is a clear signal to GOP governors around the US to start hashing out ways to restrict civil rights and the right to vote.
