Twin Peaks Season 3 OT |25 Years Later...It Is Happening Again

Not open for further replies.
I woke up at 5am here and watched all of the episodes.

I loved most of it. I see a few complaints about some of the effects, and while I think in some cases it's by design, I thought the part where (Ep 3)
Decoy Coop disappears and Good Coop enters via the plug socket
looked terrible.

Great to see
Garmanbozia
make a comeback! Fausty enough to make a Police Officer sick.

The only misfire for me was the
casino
stuff. Went on for too long.

During my near four hour binge, I think only ten minutes actually felt like Twin Peaks, most notably when
Robert Forster showed up as Frank
. I'm still willing to take a bet on an Ontkean cameo before the show is done.

Ep 4 ending:
Heather Graham cameo incoming?

I'm in the UK, can someone clarify how long I'll be waiting for Episode 5?

Just finished watching all 4 episodes. Really started to feel like Twin Peaks again by episode 4, but
overall I still think there's something off about the pacing. The old shows were good at just keeping interest in all the different story lines going on. It took a while to see the relevance in certain scenes, but they do eventually click. Just still seems like they're a bit more disjointed.

Also, come on Coop, pull it together! I wanna see our special agent back on his top game.
His scenes are amusing though.

Did not expect to see Denise again, lol. They really got the band back together for this revival.

I do think the red room looks noticeably worse now. It was especially noticeable when it cut to the flashbacks, yeah. The red looks off and it's a bit of a bummer.

(still episode 3 stuff)

Yeah I figured
Naido was referring to her and I know it's a different actress, but we don't know anything else about her and unless the series expands upon her I feel like it could still work. I don't know what that whole fireplace space place is meant to be, but I figure it's heavily connected to BOB in some way and Josie being there makes a lot of sense considering her fate. And I instantly associated that fireplace with her, Pete saw her in one.

But hey, maybe she is an unrelated character called Naido. Just speculating. I doubt we'll see her again...

My personal theory (spoilers for Episode 3)
Cooper notably asks where this place is, and I think it's pretty well established wherever that place is, it is NOT the Black Lodge, and it honestly seems like the most surreal place in the whole series to date. The purple ocean and the space generator I don't quite get yet, neither the importance of time 'jittering' in the space, but it is notable that there's a space theme due to the weird space stuff that happens in the original two seasons, and we see both Major Brigg's giant floating face and Ronnette in that space. Unlike the Black Lodge where things seem to sort of follow a systematic order (even if this order is incredibly strange), this place seems to lack structure and is more like a strange state of being.

Anyways, I think wherever this place is is where the "entity" in the box comes from, and I think it's the thing referred to as "mother" here by Ronnie. when the thing appears in the box, the box gets all black, and the thing I noticed is it starts banging on the glass. Now the glass eventually breaks, but notably in this zone something in a similar way begins to bang on the door. I don't really know what the thing is yet, but it seems to be after Coop. It appears in the box after him and seems to be banging after him in the... Fuck it, I'm going to call it the Pink Realm for now because there was a lot of pink and purple hues.

I don't know why or what this place or that thing is, but I'm convinced that they're connected and we'll be exploring both later in the series. And whatever that thing was, it seems the people treat it like some monstrous mother. Not only in that Ronnie mentions it as mother, but the scene where the blinded lady tells Cooper to be quiet and they sneak up the ladder.

I actually think the thing needs darkness to exist, when it appeared in the box it became pitch black inside before it appeared, and notably the blind lady turned on the generator or something, which turned on the lights. and seemed to stop it for a bit.

To be honest, I find this area and that monster one of the most interesting elements of the new season, and it feels like it may be on the backburner for a bit but going to be really important later. I think it's no coincidence the first episode to set up the season is about the box, the monster, and the guy who seemed to be physically in a room inside a dream.

Also, I am just going to throw this out here, Episode 3 minor spoiler talk:
Someone in this very thread earlier joked the greatest mystery they hoped was answered in the new season is whatever happened to those chocolate bunnies in the pilot. I can't believe they actually answered that.

From this topic before the episodes aired:

For me, the show's biggest mystery by far is the final fate of
the small box of chocolate bunnies.

(yup, still episode 3 stuff)

I could get on board with this theory if this show hasn't done so much to expand the Lodge ecology in every direction. With new creatures popping up all the time and
Phoebe Augustine
playing an entirely new character/creature, it just doesn't seem like Lynch is especially interested in making such connections. It's a much bigger world now.

Speaking of new creatures, I hope we'll see the motionless painted man again (does he have a name?). What an MVP.

Yeah you're probably right,
both regarding this and the Phoebe Augustine character. It might have been a bit more explicit if there's meant to be a connection. Though I do consider Frost some sort of lore keeper of this series so so personally I can totally see connections like that happening, even if it isn't Lynch's thing.

But I wouldn't mind some Josie closure and this works for me, so I guess I'll just see if it would still work by the end of this thing. I'm seeing other people talk about it on the web, and I do think it's a neat theory!

So i've got background trivia like Engels saying the lodge critters came from a planet made of corn in my head, but the whole space association is the reason I'm thinking it's still very much related to the Lodge and Bob, and Phoebe Augustine's character's behavior was standard red room stuff. I'm not basing this on much so we'll see how it goes, but perhaps the mother (monster?) is literally the mother of other black lodge creatures. Wasn't there a blue rose? Perhaps *gasp* she's the mother of blue rose cases? :p

... I'm going a bit far here with my lame Twin Peaks theories, usually that's not really my thing.

Anyway, I like the things you're saying regarding the creature. It does seem like it's averse to light in some way. And yeah, definitely expecting the mother stuff to be a major thing this season.

I can't believe they referenced that. I bet it was a Mark Frost thing.

And I'm so happy they're still using some old music cues. When that dark synth theme from Season 2 popped up while Hawk was in the woods in Ep 2 I was smiling like an idiot.

DAMN! That was one hell of a 4 hour re-introduction. O_O

This is probably the best year of TV since 2014.

Laughed my ass off at
good Cooper finally getting a cup of coffee
.

Now we have to wait two weeks. ;_;

Not just even tv. This premiere was my favorite media of 2017 so far. God damn, I've rewatched that box scene in ep 1, andy and Lucy and the end of episode 2 multiple times now.

I really disliked episode 1. Episode 2 was a bit better but not that much.
I was really disappointed. Thought how I can manage to watch the rest if the first two episodes are this bad.

Then episode 3 happened.

And then episode 4 happened.

Those two episodes were great and by the end of episode 4 I was sure this season is going to be fine.

Definitely someone at Showtime said "no David and Mark, you CAN'T just show the first two episodes and leave people with that. You HAVE to show the episodes where things begin to be good."

On episode 4 I
saw the picture of Andy, Lucy and their kid and thought, no way, LOL, have they really photoshopped Michael Cera's face on that kid?? That confirmed Cera being their kid to me and I was expecting to have a fun character, but didn't expect THAT fun :D Oh god, Michael Cera was the greatest! :D

Yeah you can really see the difference whenever a "flashback" scene happens.

Happy to see some of Lynch's trademarks in this. First person view of a car going down the road, of flashlights in the woods, of someone slowly going through the rooms of an apartment, etc.

I must say though, I have mixed feelings so far (episode 1 and 2). On one hand I love it. On the other, I... Don't? One thing that made Twin Peaks so special was having weird, surrealist scenes happen rarely, which made them more special. But this is full blown Black Lodge on crack stuff. It's still great, but on one hand I'd like a bit more coherence.

Forget about not feeling like Twin Peaks, it just feels like it doesn't even take place in Twin Peaks. The town of Twin Peaks feels as random a setting as Las Vegas, New York, etc. Still doesn't feel like one central story is established.

But again, I'm also loving it. That's Lynch for you.

I don't agree with this. Imo it feels 100% like Twin Peaks as soon as we see the town and the old characters. The thing is, the first two episodes didn't take place in Twin Peaks most of the time.
I'm pretty sure this is going to change though.

Watched 1 and 2. Too fucking weird for my liking. Season 1 and a bit of Season 2 of Twin Peaks is still perfect.

American Gods is probably better mind fuck material for me.

This just seems weird so far, and the CGI is cheap and distracting.

Just woke up. I still can't believe that Lynch managed to convince Showtime
to fund his 18-hour long Eraserhead revival for TV
. Today feels like it's gonna be a good day.

I guess the main problem for me is how it feels disconnected from the rest of the show. I mean yeah I smiled when I saw the exterior shot of the Great Northern, but then it moved on to other locations. It feels more like Mulholland Dr. where a bunch of random, seemingly disconnected scenes are put together.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, though.

Parts 3 and 4 will likely make you feel better about the show (though they might also make you pass out from laughing so much).

Agreed on Twin Peaks not feeling much like a place so far. It feels much busier and possibly bigger, but they've done nothing to establish what might have changed in town.

I agree. It feels disconnected so far but I don't think it's a bad thing. I'm pretty sure we'll see a lot of episodes taking place in Twin Peaks ;)

Yeah, remember there are 18 fucking episodes.

Let the show establish itself and get Cooper back before spending any time in Twin Peaks.

I just watched parts 1 + 2. I will watch parts 3 and 4 later cos I don't want to rush through this just because I could.

I don't have many specific things I want to say except that I liked it.

It seemed like it could have just cut out all of the stuff set in Twin Peaks until the end of part 2 though, and stuck with the NY/Doppleganger/Red Room/Buckhorn stuff, because for the first 30 mins or so I was thinking 'hm, this might actually be a disjointed mess'. With the way this was shot and put together, it feels like some scenes were just cut in where they didn't belong. By the end of the 2 hours though it had found its way into being something and it's what I wanted. I like Twin Peaks because I like David Lynch, not the other way around.

You're going to get people shitting on this big time, yeah. Twin Peaks was a mainstream hit TV show, and David Lynch isn't a mainstream hit director, but he did make Twin Peaks. So now, he's doing what he normally does, except a lot of people are expecting Twin peaks season 3. I mean it is called Twin Peaks so you can't really blame them. So a lot of people will just bounce right the fuck off this within the first hour, but that's fine.

It was good though. Had some really cool stuff in there. I'm curious about all of it.

Back to the episode 4 ending:

Annie, Audrey or Diane?
D'oh, haven't even considered
it being Diane.
I blame the sudden cut to Our Scheduled Twin Peaks Musical Interlude.
I originally hoped it would be Annie, but Diane is the most logical option - the FBI duders actually know her and she knew Coop the longest.

I think I'm just gonna go crazy and marathon Season 2, 10 episodes today, 10 episodes tomorrow and then the 2 last episodes and FWWM on Wednesday. Then I can catch up with S3.

If it is
Diane then she'll almost certainly be Laura Dern.

Another thought - (Ep 3) -
Clone Coop was called 'Dougie' and had the ring. The Secret History focuses on Doug Milford and the ring that Clone Coop had. Coincidence?

My brain is on fire after four hours of this. In the best possible way.

This thread is going to be a spoiler minefield for you. Maybe consider bumping a recent LTTP thread?

Fuck.

Two weeks until my next helping. Those four episodes flew by for me. I'm also noticing that the series is becoming more Twin Peaks like the more it goes on, but just because I said that Lynch will go full on Lynch in the next episode.

My only complaint is some of the digital cinematography. I know Lynch is fully on board with it, but damn his film work was always so beautiful.

And the returning characters haven't lost a step. Usually I have trouble recognizing certain characters when an actor is reprising a role after a long absence. For example, John McClain in Die Hard 4 doesn't seem very McClain like to me and is just Bruce Willis with shit blowing up everywhere. All of the returnees tonight slipped right back into their old roles.

I really wish I could binge the entire season right now. Now I know what was meant by "heroin version of Lynch".

I the high budget sets and equipment (or just the norm now?) threw me off at first, but i eventually fell into it and loved almost every second of the first to episodes. It is weird seeing people act like Twin Peaks characters in a modern setting that arnt the original cast, but for the most part there is just some great acting. Even Matthew Lillard lol. The tone and the high budget feels like it can be contradicting at times. At this point if Lynch convinced someone to make a new season of Twin peaks he should be able to do what ever it is that he wants to do with it. Even if some people are saying it doesn't feel like Twin Peaks, or if some people say its too much like FWWM, i would just let the makers do what ever it is that they want to at this point. They deserve it.

I thought I might be okay, since I've been in here going through the first season. I'll only be looking for my own and quoted messages. :)

I haven't even watched the new episode of American Gods yet.

I have a hard time keeping up with this, American Gods, Fargo and Handmaid's Tale already.

A few people have said two weeks until the next episode - isn't it three? Next week is episode 3, week after is 4, so three weeks until episode 5, right?
