Twitter says Super Mario Bros movie is mediocre, boring, uncreative - the Live action movie was better

A lot of people seem to be trying to deflect criticism. "Mario has no story" "it's for kids!" "were you expecting Citizen Kane?" etc My issues with the movie go far beyond story/plot. A simple story is fine, most movies don't really have complex plots, but they get by with good writing and direction. This one simply looks and sounds obnoxious in every way, just like everything Illumination has made. The cheap repetitive "humor", bizarre choice of voice actors, overbearing character animation/acting.. it's so jarring and unappealing, and way overdone at this point. Wish people demanded better.
The Sonic movie wasn't great either but I enjoyed it to a certain level. Maybe watch the movie first. For me the trailers were great fun, not expecting much else.

So….you’ve seen it? This post looks like it belongs on era. Maybe go back there?

It's made by an American studio, what did you expect?

To be fair, American Studios are SSS grade when it comes to every aspect of CG animation. From rigging models down to the writing.
Only thing holding them back at the moment is the needless politicization of the product. Lightyear for example was sacrificed on the altar of diversity rather than changing minor plot points required to not get the product banned in a dozen+ countries with a combined 500'ish million potential customers (not counting China).

You can put a Mario skin on it but ultimately it's still an Illumination movie written by the same dude who wrote Minions: The Rise of Gru. It was never going to be specially good.
But kids will love it and Mario fans will enjoy all the fan service, this will easily make at least a billion.

Of course. The Mario and Luigi games were also great storywise (for those who say Mario can't have a good story). I would love a Mario movie along those lines. I've no idea why this mediocre "child" movie (that a lot of people here are excited to watch) gets so ardently defended here.
Oops, the adults entered the thread, pack it up boys.

What? A lot here defending this are calling the movie for children (as defense for being poor), that's why I put it in quotes. I thought it was funny since those same adults are excited for it.

The thread title is really kinda BS. The old movie is more creatively inspired by mere virtue of the fact that it was live action and all of the props and costumes had to be hand-made. That's certainly more creative than a CGI movie lifting its material from a video game. Does it mean it's a "better movie"? I guess if you're a "movie critic" looking between the lines at everything, but for its role as a Mario game movie I can pretty confidently say the new one is better without having seen it yet.

I understand being a revisionist for clicks and all, but if you cut all the sex scenes from a lot of porn flicks you still get a better show than the live action Mario movie.

So edgy.

The Mario license has never been innovative in terms of storytelling. What's the point anyway? It's a family movie... just like the games.

Because sitting through a 2hr movie with no story in the cinema is a waste of time and money. These reviews inform consumers.

Why are you so triggered?

Don’t care what twitter says. I’m taking my boys to see it in the next few days. We’ll come to our own conclusion on the entertainment value of the film.

Can’t say I’m at all surprised. Hardcore fans love to hate on everything in order to prove their know-it-all status.

Meanwhile, on Planet Reality, every family in America will go see this movie and have the time of their lives. I know my daughter (age 2
1/2) will want to watch this over and over and over…and over and over.

I’m not complaining at all. I’m just glad I’ve been able to avoid Disney’s Frozen so far. I’ll take Mario Bros over that any day.

Twitter isn't saying that at all.... There's a handful of dissenting opinions that OP has decided to focus on and make a clickbait thread title around it.

Vast majority of Twitter impressions are very positive.

It's annoying that threads like this are allowed to be made here. Brings the vibe of the whole forum down.

It might be like everything Illumination has made, but they're popular and presumably Nintendo went with them for a reason, one of them being that they wanted an Illumination take on Mario.

I don't know why anyone has to demand anything, it's a movie.

I will take my kids, they will love it.

Illumination may not make plots adults like, but kids fucking love movies like minions. Literally that’s the point and they are good at that. This movie will do great In the box office.
Right. It’s an animated Mario Bros movie made by Illumination. No question it will be exactly what it was meant to be. And will be enjoyed by many/all of us who’ve never gotten a good Mario movie.

1 Billion at the box office confirmed
I'm going to see it twice so let's see how far it can go. It doesn't seem like there is any competition for the movie till GotG 3 comes out. Any Disney animation has failed on all fronts recently so this will be a treat and breath of fresh air to watch.

It looks fun, I'm really just here for the nostalgia and references and music. Kids are pretty excited too, it's going to be my youngest's first time at the theatre so that'll be fun.

I showed my oldest son (turning 8 this week) the trailer for the old live action version and he said "It looks like they just made a random weird movie and called it Mario" -- pretty accurate actually...

I love the Live Action Movie. Leguizamo, Hoskins....legendary. The Soundtrack, the score, the mood was supercool.

Speed of light, baby!
I like it as well for how bizarre it is. The tunnel chase was fun. It wasn't really a Mario movie, but it was fun in its own way. At least it didn't pretend to be based on the games.

Lmao at the man-children "critics" bashing a fucking Super Mario movie for not having a substantive plot. These are the same people who unironically consider Marvel movies to be high art.

Personally I can't wait to ingest five pounds of edibles and watch this in imax 4d.

Calling it now, Wreck-It Ralph did it better.

Wow so from the game that virtually has no plot beyond save princess and characters who barely talk we get a movie with an uninspiring...plot? Alright then.

I mean Pirates of the Caribbean was based on no plot, no characters, just a vague setting. The writers basically pulled that entire movie out of their asses, and it was fantastic.

The fuck were they expecting? Shawshank Redemption? Drive?
It'll be an alright movie to entertain the kids. Job done.

There are great family movies, average family movies, and bad family movies. People were probably expecting an above average family movie.

That's the brilliant thing about optioning recognisable IPs. You can literally make the movie equivalent of a dump-truck of diseased oysters and people will defiantly fork over their hard-earned cash either to 'make up their own minds' or 'see how bad it is' or simply stick it to some random online personality who has nothing to gain or lose either way.

It really is just IP pull as well. You tell people about some god-awful indie movie they've never heard of and you won't see them reaching for their wallets, desperate to 'make up their own minds' or 'see just how bad it really is'. Exposure effect is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

This movie was a target for young kids, this movie will guarantee big numbers at theaters. Twitter can say how bad it is, it doesn't matter.

I think there is a particular irony in that most of the time when someone says "they will see it to make up their own mind" they have actually already made up their mind.

I think the the flood of "Super Mario Bros. (1993) was actually great!" videos on YouTube will start soon or has already begun to start.

Were people expecting great story and writing from a movie based on a character that has "it's me mario" as a catchphrase?

You know what? I've never seen the '93 movie. It does look far more creative as one of the RT critics say. I mean just look at this trailer!
