People like to give cops a whole lot of shit these days.
Without disregarding the significant reasons behind that, consider crap like this.
Officers in the US are operating in an environment where they're surrounded by psychopaths with guns, where ludicrous bullshit like this could happen at any moment. What does that sort of stress do for their mental state? How does it impact their interactions with innocent people?
Spread some of that hate to the politicians and far-right fuckwits who enable this sort of environment.

This is partly true and I agree that the prevalence of guns in America is a big part of why police are so trigger happy. At the same time that argument does nothing to explain the difference between how white people and black people are treated by police.

The motherfuckers walked up into a police station with ski masks, body armor and guns. Thats mass shooting shit, man. Exercising thier amendmend rights? That is called suicide by cop scenario. Frankly, out of all of the times that I would expect an altercation end in officers killing citizens, this would be it.
Would those cops have been calm, deflated the situation, and been polite to the gunmen if they were PoCs? Of course they would. Of COURSE they would.
Hell, they learned that that it was naughty to pull such a silly stunt, but they still need to be punished, so they're going to have to do some community service. Maybe put the screws to them by putting them on probation. That'll teach em. Hopefully someone will be compassionate to give them a job with a record. That could get rough!
It doesn't, it's just a general observation that they're being forced to work in what is, honestly, an unworkable environment. Nobody should have to work in those conditions, they're police officers, not hyper-elite counter-terrorism commando supermen.

To be honest, I'm not surprised that they didn't get shot on sight considering that they're clearly in an open carry state in which case the cops handled the situation admirable. If the cops would be as admirable if they were people of color is something different...
The thing that gets me though is that they can be bold enough to talk back to the cops. Unless I'm getting the voices mixed up, one of the guys literally says wtf is wrong with you guys pointing your guns at me. I don't know if a POC could get away with so brashly talking down to and reprimanding cops that have guns pointed at them.

Imagine the scenario from inside the building. You are in a Detroit police station in the outer waiting room. You look out the window and see two men. They are both dressed in body armour and are wearing ski masks. One has a large rifle strapped to his chest and a handgun on his hip. He is also wearing dark sunglasses. There is a large Go Pro type camera device jutting out from his shoulder. They are walking briskly with aggressive body language towards the door of the room you are in.
What does a normal, reasonable person think in that moment? They think, this is going to be a mass shooting. These two will kill everyone they can within this building. I will immediately flee in fear and panic.
What a normal, reasonable person does not think is, oh, this must be two peaceable open carry advocates who are merely making a point of how legal it is to openly display their weapons in public. I'll stay right here to see how this goes.
The stupidity and churlish entitlement of these two beggars belief. I'm appalled that they'll merely get a slap on the wrist at best.

I'm guessing it was probably because one of them was packing a very visible camera rather than a gun, made it clear these were just attention whore nutcases rather than a serious threat to public safety.
Doing shit like this should be akin to yelling FIRE in a movie theatre. They're not proving a point, they're being fucking stupid and endangering many lives, not just their own.
I realize it's not a black and white situation (no pun intended). As in, where do you draw the line as to when it becomes a felony in an open carry state? Is it when you have a gun AND body armor on? Is it a gun AND a ski mask? A gun, a ski mask, AND body armor? So if I didn't want be a felon I could just lose the ski mask and be ok? It's not as clear cut as yelling fire in a crowded building.

Is that what they said? What people would actually prefer is some kind of consistency from their law enforcement in the US. What people would actually prefer is for people not to pull dumb-ass stunts like this and use their brain power to see why the fact that they have confidence in escaping this situation relatively unscathed in comparison to other instances means that something is deeply flawed in their society that they should be working to fix rather than abusing their privilege for idiotic YouTube bait.
I'd expect a lot less "Sir" and lot more bullets.

It's a joke. This isn't a stupid stunt. This isn't yelling fire in a movie theater. This is two men actively doing something that, honestly, yes, SHOULD have ended in them at least getting shot and wounded. It's beyond a miracle they are still alive and it is only the case because of the color of their skin. Any black or brown person does this and the news would be fucking calling it suicide by cop.

I would have a lot more sympathy for police in our gun infested country if they could do something as simple and obvious as support gun control. Instead they overwhelmingly oppose it.

I don't because the situation is so warped, the only outcome I see from one of them being hurt or killed is being turned into victims/martyrs. I'm sure they'd consider themselves as such already even with the punishment they're getting along with any pro-gun contingent delusional enough to consider what they did reasonable. That reaction would only be amplified in a situation where they were hurt.
Count me in with this and you can throw in this tidbit as well . Law enforcement agencies shouldn't continue to do, ignore or encourage shitty things if they don't want tax payers to give them shit.

Besides the fact as someone from the UK I find the premise of 'Open Carry' fucking terrifying (and interminably stupid), I think it should be completely disallowed in some locations, like schools, colleges and universities, libraries, police stations, civil service properties and suchlike.
