Line to get in, 4 stories high. If any of you all have been to the Texas Capitol before, you know how huge the place is.

I disagree. Abortion should be available to anyone who needs it, whenever they need it and I don't see a need for more regulation than any other equally serious medical procedure.

Interesting. At any point in the pregnancy? In poorly run facilities? Didn't we just find out the consequences and horrors of this type of thinking?

I'm very curious your general age and if you have children.

Awesome to see Obama voice his support. I think the fact that she can do this is ridiculous, but since the proposed legislation is equally ridiculous she has my full support. It's inspiring to see a politician with such passion actually working for the people. Sad that it's so rare in this day and age.

16th Century England you can thank. That's when Parliamentary Procedure started being introduced.

Damn you Britain of the past! We also inherited their garbage 'first past the post' pseudo-democracy up here in Canada as well. I dream of the day when we may have a real democracy, not just the lipstick of one.

I don't think anyone is asking for shittier facilities...

I'm just going to assume you have a hard time reading.

You should probably read his statement a bit more carefully.

The key word being 'needs' and if you're implying that the poorly run facilities aren't up to current regulations then you missed the importance of the other clarification in my post about adhering to existing surgical standards.

To sate your curiosity I'm old and yes I have a kid. I'm curious what you think the relevance of that is.

I really enjoy listening to her speak. I'm amazed she's still coherent after ten hours of this, never mind legitimately engaging and interesting. She's like a real life Leslie Knope. In fact this whole thing feels like it's straight out of Parks and Rec.

Davis successfully filibustered an education cuts bill two years ago. It was only 75 minutes that time, but still.

Edit: I checked Texas legislative records, this is the longest filibuster in 18 years (May 25th, 1995, Gonzalo Barrientos did a 8.5 hour filibuster followed the next day by a 14.5 hour filibuster)

You and other responders are skirting around the "whenever they need it" portion of your comment. As it stands, that seems to be implying no limit on term. If not, why did you reply to me as it seems we don't really disagree on anything else.

I ask your age and parental status out of personal curiosity.

Story is going national. Chalk it up as another blow to the GOP's outreach makeover. They're pretty much done nationally with most minorities and women.

I just find it weird they keep pushing women and minorities away to appease a group...that would vote for them no matter what. Especially when Obama ran for office.

Fortunately for the GOP, with the Voting Rights Act being shut down, its not going to matter much. There is nothing like disenfranchising entire segments of minority populations by absurd redistricting means in order to solidify the party's hold on power in specific areas that they feel are threatened.

What would happen if someone tackled her? And she was unable to speak after?

Are their rules to protect her from a situation like that?

I know it's a crazy thought I'm just curious.

Oh please be more condescending. I did not expect the person behind the glorious Scribblenauts franchise to pull the "words from a famous guy, god I'm so deep" shtick.

I did not think that the words were taken from Harry Potter, but they would not be out of place in a childish fantasy book.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light" is meaningless flowery language. True at its core (yes, darkness is the absence of light) but the non-literal interpretation that is meant to be taken at true isn't necessarily true, or true in all cases.

You were ignorant of the source, so I corrected you.

I was just responding to the guy that said we should show no empathy towards those we disagree with. I responded with a person who lived and died for civil rights and chose compassion and love over hate and violence to get his message across. It's completely within reasonable context for me to quote a civil rights giant talking about how to treat people. You probably want to rethink the whole "Dr. Kings quotes sound like they come from a Harry Potter novel" thing.

2 hours 40 mins

Also, I've seen some speculation that the bill's author may rescind it from the floor early, around 11 or so, to allow them to pass two uncontroversial bills that are being held up by this before the session expires, but who knows if that'll happen or not.

EDIT: Just saw it's already been posted.

I fully support Sen. Davis and am inspired by her actions, but out of curiosity, did Obama say anything when the WI legislators split when Walker was busting Unions?

I don't see how that is relevant to anything, but yes he did. Anyways, that tweet is from the WH staff. Comments by Obama himself on there are signed

Yes, in the most condescending manner possible. Thanks for that. :)

And no, I won't rethink it because it -does- sound like something out of a Harry Potter novel. Or to be more correct, that quote from Doctor King sounds like something Rowling or another fantasy writer would have put into their novel. Dunno why you used "quotes." In the English language plural words are often marked by an "es" or "s" ending. You used the plural in this case, but we were only talking about a single quote so you should use the singular "quote" in that sentence.

Her colleagues are attempting to ask a question but Davis needs to yield in order for that to happen. While she can yield and still maintain her filibuster, she probably doesn't want to risk anything these last couple of hours.

But what do you mean about the 11:45 they will vote on different bills?

But what do you mean about the 11:45 they will vote on different bills?

The end of the special legislative session expires at midnight. If Davis takes her filibuster till then, the Republicans will not be able to move other items on their agenda because by law, the session will have ended. So GOP'ers are mumbling about the author of the bill removing it from consideration so action on other items can take place. We'll see, though.

But what do you mean about the 11:45 they will vote on different bills?

They actually have some important bills to pass which are also impacted by this fillibuster, so the speaker will withdraw the abortion bill to end the fillibuster and vote on those

Wouldn't trust them though

But what do you mean about the 11:45 they will vote on different bills?

The original sponsor of the bill has the authority to pull the bill from the floor. There are two other items on the agenda that Republicans would like to pass and that Democrats aren't opposed to, but can't be voted on until this bill is resolved one way or the other, so as the clock runs down the pressure is going to increase to pull this bill so they can at least salvage the two uncontroversial ones.
