Ubisoft issues totally convincing response to Assassin's Creed Unity's resolution

Haha oh Ubisoft

Those preorders on PS4 must got a big nose-dive after that PR disaster

Good to see that the 1% of "core" gamers still matters :P

That post is just them dodging the question, nothing more.

The problem isn't that is 900p but that they said it was 900p on both just to avoid discussion. And they did say it so it's hard to say it was misunderstood.

Any other justification would be enough. If the hardware wasn't capable, or they didn't want to spend resources on extra effects for one version. Whatever, something else. Instead they say that it's just to avoid discussion.

Of course that isn't adressed here. It's just PR crap.

My thought process:

* Oh look! New Ubisoft thread!
* Oh! They issued a response!
* Oh! The thread is already 8 pages?

- I read the article

* Oh! They refuted the claim in the first sentence. This is promising!
* Oh! They're still fucking full of complete shit.

My thought process:

Sure am glad they made my purchasing decisions easy this year. I mean I was tempted to grab Far Cry 4, but they sure did a good job of talking me out of it.

I mean let's be honest, Ubisoft is the definition of sequel factory at this point. Assassin's Creed got a reprieve because of Black Flag. It needs to die and I hope this is the first of many nails in its coffin.

We get it Ubisoft, you done goofed. We're past the point of listening to your spin. Go back over into that corner with MS so you can both cry over how everyone is mean and just doesn't understand.

The more Ithink about this the more I am amazed by their failures.

They released this essentially because of"us"' the 0.0005% of people, the most informed, connected and vocal and they legitimately thought a release like this would actually WORK.

It is 2014 you dumb fucks.

Already made my post in the other topic:

Wooooow epic bullshit.

No you fucking didn't. Who do you think you're fooling? Who the hell searches for words to describe an event happening and then falls on "We decided to lock them at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff'?" That's someone describing a precise accounting of internal discussions that went on, and he was not supposed to share that shit out loud so he got caught.

How fucking dumb does Ubisoft think gamers are? Profoundly, apparently. The whole post is them trying to convince us how beautiful the game is (which is not the goddamn point), and then them saying nonsense like this:

No, that is not what gamers were wondering you gargantuan fucking liars.

Boom. This.

Keep digging Ubisoft.

Yeah, it pretty much does. Microsoft paid for the parity and he's unafraid to be brazen about it and put it out there. It's a total debacle.

Yup.

From the other thread. It seems Phil Spenser is super ok with this news. Surprisingly enough.

Edit beaten like this disaster has beaten my interest in supporting this game

If xbone can do 900p, ps4 should be able to do 1080p. Is this not a fair assumption?!

The two main bottlenecks on the Xbone - only 32MB of high bandwidth eSRAM and a GPU that's 500 GFLOPs lower performance then the PS4 - are significant.

If the Xbone can run the game at 900p/30 with solid frame rate and v-sync, then the PS4 should absolutely be able to hit 1080p, with room to spare.

If both console versions do release at 900p/30, the only way Ubisoft can have any shred of integrity to their recent statements is if there are notable differences outside of base resolution and frame rate. If the PS4 version runs smoothly, with good IQ, a solid frame rate and no torn frames, and the Xbone doesn't, there there would be truth to their comments.

Time will tell.

I give up. Even if there is any money involved anywhere in this process it's been catastrophically squandered. There's the marketing deal, yesyes, but this is gone a million miles beyond that.

If you're Ubisoft you'd demand money equal to the theoretical number of fewer PS4 copies they looked to sell, plus now all the copies they won't sell period from cancellations and brand distrust. They'd be betting against themselves and that was even before this week.
If you're Microsoft you have to pay Ubisoft enough to think you'll earn it back via people buying your version of the game based solely on the media descriptions of parity performance and ignoring the actual status of their place in the console market. More specifically they'd like people to buy their hardware instead of a PS4 because of the parity of this one game (otherwise their target is exclusively people with both consoles already, which would be even more stupid).

Neither side can be that stupid, right? Do not actually answer that question.
TLDR; this is all so stupid that if conspiracy theories end up being true that would almost be an even stranger outcome than where we are now.

At first I was really excited for this game but all the lies makes it last a bitter taste in my mouth. Ubi does not deserve my money and thankfully most people here feel the same. Too bad mainstream will still lap it up. They will get away with all their lying. Can't believe that some people here are taking this face value.

Fuck you, Ubisoft. I don't fucking believe you.

This is PR 101 damage control.

Also, fuck everyone involved in these anti-consumer business decisions. I know Microsoft is responsible for this bullshit, so Phil Spencer, a giant fucking fuck you to you as well.

Ubisoft won't see a god damn dime from me, and Microsoft now has two massive strikes against them.

This wouldn't even impact me, as I'd be buying the PC version of the game, which will of course be gimped for its own reasons since they'll hand the port off to a bunch of fucking monkeys as they usually do.

Here's a gif to also visually illustrate how much I would like for you lying corporate shitsacks to go fuck yourselves.

Too late, I don't believe you.

The only way to convince me would be to technically break down the game. The way I see it there is no reason for PS4 version to not have higher resolution than XB1 version, given the notable differences between the GPU.

I accept that the one competent Ubisoft PR manager woke from a depressing bender and saw what he said originally and immediately flipped his shit.

Ubisoft is such a behemoth at this point that all these recent PR blunders must be a result of its inability to coordinate/communicate a focused message. I can't even imagine the bureaucracy involved in that company at this point.

Of course, he's the guy who closed the deal.

Senior AC: Unity dev makes unguarded comments that the PS4 version has been locked to the same specs as the Xbone version to avoid debates about the Xbone performance.

Ubi panic. While what was said was true, it jeopardises both the success of the PS4 version, and their *ahem* relationship with MS. They release a non-statement that says the comments were misinterpreted, but doesn't deny them. They throw out the bone to PS4 owners saying resolutions haven't been set.

Phil picks up the phone to Ubi and questions the last bit.

Ubi then release the latest statement and say in no uncertain terms that both versions are 900p/30.

Phil retweets this, then walks around the office high-fiving everyone.

Reads like they held a gun to the guys head to say the opposite of what he already said. Yeah, i'm not believing it. You don't say you went for parity out of the blue for no reason.

I would rather they knocked down the NPC count. I don't need thousands of NPCs. All they do is get in the way. The only times they are useful is for blending n. You don't need thousands to do that. The only way you've ever "interacted" with NPCs is by bumping into them (oh fun) or killing them. =/

I don't buy any of it (especially the game ***oh ho ho ho ho ho ho***) but if the guy genuinely did acidentally and coincidentally use those particular words in that discussion resulting in all this... that must suck a fair bit, because now it is fairly impossible for people to see things the other way now.

The only way they could turn it round, would be to demonstrate the game on both platforms and show that there is actually a difference between the ps4 and xbox one, because lets face it, there really should be

I would have to see a video of the old build of Watch Dogs running on an actual PS4 dev kit unit to accept that I'm wrong, but until anything close to that point, Ubisoft has been proven to bullshit as a form of PR, so nothing that comes out of their mouth can be stated as fact.

SO basically something that is extremely hard if not impossible to provide in a timely manner. And because of that nothing they ever say ever can ever be considered a fact. Holy shit that logic.

I think this is exactly how it happened.

Well, he goes into more detail, and maybe it was just poor wording after all, but I am still not satisfied with the answer.

He actually speaks about the Playstation 4 specifically, but it is with the same language:

Senior Producer Vincent Pontbriand to suggest we lowered the resolution on the PlayStation 4.

Both of their PR statements used this language. They did not 'lower' the specs or did not 'reduce' the specs. However, he also makes the point further on in the response that the resolution was not set until late in the development cycle. So technically, even if it is true that they intentionally 'locked' the game to the same spec simply to stop the debates, they wouldn't have actually 'lowered' the resolution because it was never 'set' in the first place.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS negotiated for resolution parity but Ubisoft is allowed to offer other less marketable enhancements. 1080p has been a hot debate lately so I could see MS pushing for it.

Preach.

They've already clearly given their reasoning already and are now trying to pretend its all one big misunderstanding. All of this backpedaling is just absurd and honestly insulting theater.

No amount of PR would help Ubisoft in this case. PS4 gamers would still question exactly why this game was 900p in the end on their system. In a way, it is good that this hit ahead of the release so you can make a better decision regarding your money.

Thanks Ubisoft! You schmucks.

“This is something that the new hardware allows us to do,” Pontbriand says about the number of characters on screen. Of course, massive crowds are also part of the story of the French Revolution, so it was essential to the game’s setting.

Seems that while crowds are essential to the game, the French language, or French accents for that matter, are not. Thus, we have Napoleon with a British accent!

It is to me. If there was no internet and people just played their games, shit like pixel wars would be almost non existent.

And if there was no internet and people just played their games companies could just happily screw over their customers without fear of backlash.

The ironic part is Ubisoft seems to forget the internet happened too.

It is to me. If there was no internet and people just played their games, shit like pixel wars would be almost non existent.

"If there was no adequate method for consumers to communicate amongst themselves, said consumers would not debate about such things"

Ubisoft to kill the internet by 2021

Thing is, thats way too particular to have been said by accident. You don't go out of your way to emphasize a certain point 'by acciden'. Nothing he originally said, can mean anything but what he said.

well, this certainly seems to support my "guy that's probably not very PR-friendly made a supremely dumb offhand comment/joke" theory.

something something don't attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence something something

so we can safely deduce that ubi's anvil engine is made with 900p in mind? all of their games are 900p, no?
No because that would most likely mean that the games wouldn't have the option of an increased resolution on pc. Engines aren't that simple.

SO basically something that is extremely hard if not impossible to provide in a timely manner. And because of that nothing they ever say ever can ever be considered a fact. Holy shit that logic.

It'd be nice if they were truthful enough to be trusted at mostly face value, but the focus of this thread proves that's impossible. You're completely bonkers to trust Ubisoft without hard evidence.
