UFC 143 |OT|: Diaz vs Conduit - The Start of the 209 Era

After watching it for a second time, I still think that Diaz won Rds 1 and 2 with more effective strikes and it wasn't until the 3rd and 4th that Carlos began to find his range and neutralize Nick. Rd 5 was close but the TD/back control would give Diaz the edge. 3-2 Diaz

Not gonna complain though as it was a close fight either way

Good thing you're not a judge then. Everyone and their mother can agree that Condit won...except you.

The funny thing is that Diaz is a volume puncher and most of his shots have little power on them and are just meant to either set up normal-power shots or knock the opponent off balance and win by accumulation. Yet Diaz didn't land any shots of significant power and was outstruck by a large margin so didn't get anywhere close to accumulation. And we're supposed to give him rounds . . . because he's Nick Diaz? And oh man if Condit would have just sat there and Cerroned Nick coulda totally landed a real strike!

we're supposed to give him rounds just bc he keeps walking forward all the time

If a wrestler keeps shooting in on someone with a good sprawl and keeps getting stuffed, and while he's hanging on to the double leg he eats some hammerfists to the face or body..who do you score that for? I score it for the guy who successfully defended the technique and landed any sort of attacks. Initiating something is NOT control. Walking forward only to get neutralized with strikes and circled with good footwork is NOT control. The only round i had as a draw was the first one. Im sorry but the fighter who both neutralizes his opponent AND lands shots is winning the criteria of octagon control. Walking forward shouldnt be scored any more than walking backwards if nothing comes out of it.

my post was sarcastic, dude.

Condit fought like a poor man's GSP. He straight-up dismantled Diaz. The only thing GSP would have achieved is make Diaz *actually* cry in frustration during the match.

The only thing remotely interesting about GSP-Condit is that Jackson co-trained GSP for GSP-Shields. He knows Georges's strengths and weaknesses. Condit has a chance because of this, but unfortunately doesn't have the sheer strength required to defend an all out wrestlefuck, which will probably happen.

GSP is the best 170 in the world, and there isn't even a promising rookie who looks like they will one day be able to compete with our King Georges.

Anyone watch the post-fight show on FUEL? Rashad is the most articulate guy they've had on these broadcasts. PLZ, I don't want to see Jone Bones Jones anymore. Koscheck seemed weird not trolling anyone.

Jackson has said he won't be involved in the training of either guy for this fight.

Seems to me that the difference between "running" and "avoiding" is important as is the difference between "controlling the ring" and "chasing".

Condit won it in my book. More effective striking with equal if not more volume.

lmao @ Lauzon wanting to see the Fight Metric.

Hahaha yeah. I can only hope he's in on the joke.

I'm just gonna say that several of those tweets came out of NorCal, and just because you're a fighter doesn't mean you're a qualified judge. I'm surprised this decision is even being debated.

Uncle Dana wants Nick vs. GSP by any means necessary...

Uncle Dana said:
It's crazy, but, I was thinking it after the fight. You know, people are bitching and thinking it was close or whatever, we can do that fight again before GSP comes back. It depends on Carlos too, he's really gotta say, and Nick's gotta say I want to fight him again too.

Built Roy Tough is right. Werdum's stand up was the most shocking part of the whole card. Raphael Cordeiro is a god amongst men.

Dana White is so gross. It's so obvious he desperately wanted Diaz to win leading up to the fight to have him fight GSP, and now he's just making it laughably blatant. So transparent and corrupt.

I love how immediately after the fight it was like "I think Condit won a close decision." The day after it's "Condit beat Nick's ass for at least 4 rounds." In a month it's going to be "Condit TKO'd Nick in R1."

I loved even more how Nick and pro-wrestling fans thought Nick actually outstruck Condit until the fight stats came out. Now you have people arguing that Nick is a power puncher and his 50%-strength pitter-patter punches should count double, which is maybe the funniest thing ever?

You'd have to be a fool if you thought Diaz won that fight.

Carlos had a plan, one that worked, and he stuck to it and won. The Diaz camp should have anticipated something like this. It didn't make for an entertaining fight but he did what he knew would make him win.

But as someone said: If you dont count Condit's kicks NICK WON!!!111!!

And yeah i love me some Nick Diaz but Condit had a point based game plan instead of a 209 based tactic.

I would think the GSP/Diaz idea has lost it's luster anyway. GSP would have employed the same counter striking strategy that Condit did along with mixing in takedowns.

lol @ those tweets

Your goal as an MMA fighter is to neutralize your opponents gameplan/attacks just as much as its your goal to attack the other fighter

Condit was able to neutralize Diaz for most of the fight and Diaz did not adjust enough to overcome Condit's defence while still taking a lot of shots

Edit - Is Gil Melendez the last hope for Cesar Gracie? If he ever gets to the UFC lol

Jake Shields fans had the same attitude going into and after the GSP fight
Shields and his camp and fans kept saying he was going to bring the fight to GSP but when the fight game he didn't seem to have a sense of urgency or willingness to engage GSP more aggressively

It's pretty telling that he's convincing himself people would want to see this fight again. Who in their right mind would want to watch a rematch? It's time to move on, Uncle Dana. Greg Jackson has won.

Between rounds 4 and 5 Nate told Nick he was up 3 rounds to 1. I don't get why corners do this in close fights. Nick said if he knew he was behind he would have attacked more when he had Condit's back.

Never let it go to decision, you'd think Diaz would have kept that in mind even if his corner was telling him that he was winning

Hey I was saying in the chat I think Condit basically schooled his ass as it was going on, so you can't say that for everyone. You could give Rd 2 to Diaz if you thought a meaningless weak body flurry meant something versus Condit controlling the rest of the round. Or you could have gave Diaz Rd 5 if you thought a meaningless weak takedown where Diaz did nothing won him the round versus Condit owning him the rest of it.

You really can tell the MMA amateur hour fans from the ones that have watched it a long time - or at least in combo with other combat arts like boxing.

I think this is where MMA lags behind boxing. Too many fans who got interested in the sport as it got popular just expect drag out brawl fests, and if your strategy is not to get involved in one, then you're running away or something. Yet you see this kind of shit in boxing ALL the time. Styles making fights. All these people bitching that Diaz won, I bet if you gave the tape to guys like Freddie Roach and asked him who won, he would say Condit probably swept the fight.

Nothing about Diaz's gameplan did ANYTHING to Condit. He got countered, he got outstruck, his aggression was used against him, and he lost. If this were the exact same type of fight except these guys were in a ring with boxing gloves on, there's no controversy or discussion whatsoever.
