UFC 148 |OT| Shattering the myth that is Anderson Silva - 7.7.2012

IT's a very risky move. If he's off by a little or Chael happens to duck his head, he nails him right in the chin. If Chael can't recover, that's an L for Anderson.

Look at the placement, even if Chael ducks his head down the knee does not hit his chin, thigh would have. It is a skillful move, not risky. The way Chael has his guard up combined with his posture there was just no way that was going to hit him in the head.

Only way it hits his head is if Chael slides further down on the cage, which makes no sense if he is planning to wall walk. I see the somewhat risk, but it is not really that big of one when compared to finishing the fight.

Now are we talking more free content or content with a price? I understand with this sport there does have to be a limit on the content, unless the content is actual fights. Boxing still has its Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 I think, if the popularity of MMA got to those heights I would not object to it.

Now should ESPN have a daily MMA show, hell no. haha

Totally agree with that, can't stand either of them.

Between Bellator, the occasional Strikeforce, "Legacy Fighting Championship," and the godawful "UFC on FuelTVs," aren't we pretty much at that point?

We are but not to a point of consistent quality is what I am looking for. The more popularity the sport gains the more I hope to see the quality of broadcast go up.

The different leagues and things like that must confuse some viewers out there, granted the ones that watch each are probably knowledgeable of the sport already. In short I don't know what I mean. haha

the point is, that knee was masterful. risky for all fighters except those named anderson silva. it's silly for anyone to try to downplay the knee and compare it to anything anyone in the octagon has done. the margin for error is so slim, yet in anderson silva fashion, he pulls it off.

Exactly. You have to go out of your way to downplay the riskyness of that knee. The odds of Silva smashing Chael's face with that knee were extremely high just by virtue of the positioning of the two. Chael himself probably didn't expect Silva to have the nerve to pull off that move; he probably expected more fist strikes.

I honestly thought he was going to walk back and let him stand. Then the sky came down.

As a spectator, that knee caught me completely off guard and I winced a bit seeing it. I have no idea what Chael had in his head when that happened, being in there first hand and all. I imagine everything after that was nothing short of a literal blur.

I'm not going to attempt to pretend to know what was going through Chael's head when he thought he was a martial arts cyclone, but I'm willing to bet "my wrestling has failed me after these 2 stuffed TDs" was not one of them.
lmao! should be his new nickname.

the moment you realize that you're fucked.

You mean the guy convicted of fraud, the guy who got caught with absurd levels of testosterone in his system, and the guy who has fake tapped and cried foul when he's been beaten in the past?

The "real" Chael isn't the swell guy that he and his PR have tried to establish.

Did they ever publish the ng/dl figure or are you just basing this on a T/E ratio?

Well, Chael made everyone involved in this event a shitload of money, that's for sure.

What's next for Silva? Can't see anyone taking him out. I hope he starts fighting more than once a year though.
Is Lombard any good? Never watched Bellator.

I think I remember FRB saying that Silva would make $7 million for this fight.

Once a year? He's normally fights at least twice in a year.

He will either fight the winner of Munoz vs. Weidman or more likely Lombard (that is if he doesn't get his hype train derailed and/or exposed by Boetsch.)

Is Lombard any good? Never watched Bellator.

The EPA should give him a medal for all the cans he's crushed.

Holy shit! No wonder he wants to keep on fighting for another 5 years.

Once a year? He's normally fights at least twice in a year.

Last time I saw him fight was June last year. So it's been more than a year. Probably injuries though.

Well, the alternatives are Munoz, Weidman or Bisping. So yeah.

Anderson fought last February and August. In both 2010 and 2009 he fought in April and August. There's a good chance he'll fight again this year at UFC 153 which is being held in Rio in October. But no-one should look down on him for taking the rest of the year off and not fighting at least twice in the same year for the first time in his career.

Whilst we're on the subject, there's good potential for UFC 153 to be god tier. JDS vs. Cain 2 was removed from UFC 152 for a reason, maybe it's JDS' demands to fight in Brazil. Jose Aldo should be fit and healthy too. And if Anderson's up for it then it'll just push the entire card over the top.

But it's the UFC we're talking about here, so chances are UFC 153 will be headlined by Little Nog vs. Stanislav Nedkov.

You're right, my math was way off.

Yeah, there's way too many events to really have stacked cards anymore. Plus with all the injuries lately...

But apparently there's another event in two days?!? Look at this lineup:

MAIN CARD (FUEL TV)
Mark Munoz vs. Chris Weidman
Joey Beltran vs. James Te Huna
Kenny Robertson vs. Aaron Simpson
Francis Carmont vs. Karlos Vemola
T.J. Dillashaw vs. Vaughan Lee
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Anthony Njokuani

PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook)
Alex Caceres vs. Damacio Page
Chris Cariaso vs. Josh Ferguson
Andrew Craig vs. Rafael Natal
Marcelo Guimaraes vs. Dan Stittgen
Raphael Assuncao vs. Issei Tamura

On the upside, these unassuming looking cards are usually high on entertaining fights.

He needs another win then he'll get paired up to a guy like Bisping to test if he's ready.
Why not give him Bisping now? Who else would Bisping fight? I know Stann wants Bisping, which could be a good fight I guess, but Stann is always going to be a top-10 gatekeeper in my opinion. Belcher has the skills to be top-5 so why not give him a shot.

I think I remember FRB saying that Silva would make $7 million for this fight.

PVT: You said Sonnen must have made something like $2 mil for this fight. You don't know for sure, but how much do you think Anderson made on this fight?

Vinny Magalhães: There's a rumor here in the States that Anderson made $7 million just to have the fight moved from Brazil to Vegas. And there's that thing, Anderson probably makes 250K just to show, he has his sponsors, and when you go take a look, another 750K just from sponsors, they also say Jon Jones makes about $3 dollars for every PPV buy. Anderson, because he has a more experienced career, I believe is around that ball park as well. Let's say there was 1 million PPV buys and Anderson took about $3 dollars for every PPV buy, so he made $3 million just on the PPV. So he must have made around $10 million just on this fight, so the bullshit Chael said worked out better for Anderson than anybody else.

Source in portuguese

Vinny Magalhaes was the BJJ coach for Chael prior to this fight, it's conjecture and he's guessing, but he's a little in the know to make an educated guess.

He reckons Sonnen made ~2 million and Anderson made ~10 million off this fight.

You need to ease the casuals into that tattoo, bro.

I understand that, I wasn't comparing it. Definitely not to those shitty Rashad knees.

Now thats impressive cos unlike Forrest, Ali's opponent doesnt throw punches with feet stuck in cement!! Griffin has zero athletic ability!! Remember the reaction to the Forrest v Bonner 1st fight. Joe Rogan called it the MMA Hagler v Hearns lol. Bar room brawl at best.

Isnt it the case that Sonnen was basically juiced up to the gills in his 1st fight with Silva which explained his performance. Even he did win that fight he would of been stripped.

Wow, did not know this. Why wasn't he banned either way though?

He got suspended by the commission for 12 months I think which was reduced to 6 months.

The problem is TRT is not illegal. Get a script, clear it with the commission and you are good to go. It's a joke!!!

The way I see it is if you are old and cannot prepare yourself to fight and get in the condition required without TRT then you should not be fighting!!

Apparently Fail Sonnen will try to appeal Anderson's victory

@mmaencyclopedia
I've got big news for @mauroranallo and the MMA Show.

@mmaencyclopedia
Found out @sonnench to file appeal. More with @mauroranallo

Hahahaa wow Anderson should take a picture with the magazine cover. Either just holding it, or go all the way and tape it to a punching bag for Maximum Ether.

Reminds me of

Nice.

I can watch dodging gifs all day. None of them match the Ali gif though. Poor Rich was the first:

Apparently Fail Sonnen will try to appeal Anderson's victory

I read that earlier and I really hope it is internet hype.
Sonnen came off like a man after the fight and the presser, this would really just put him to new levels of idiocy.
Not only that, it would show him to be especially weasely and two faced considering everything that he said after the fight.

EDIt: apparently Sonnen's manager is denying it at the moment, but the coach says he talked to Sonnen already.

What a bunch of horse shit.
