UFC 148 |OT| Shattering the myth that is Anderson Silva - 7.7.2012

In all honestly I would have to knock Anderson below Fedor, GSP and Hendo on the GOAT list when he loses to Chael. It's a glaring hole in his legacy that his often boring fights did not make up for.

Assuming that Chael were to win- you'd seriously knock Anderson below GSP because you feel that Anderson often puts on boring fights? That's a hoot.

As a fellow Fedor fan, I also find it interesting that you're so looking forward to knocking Anderson down several pegs after his first loss in 6+ years should it happen. I remember thinking how completely unfair and short-sighted it was when much of the MMA community did the same thing to Fedor after the Werdum loss.

Seriously, I had a nightmare last night that Chael made Anderson tap to strikes in the first round. You don't know how relieved I was to wake up and look at my calendar and realize it had not happened, because if it did, the world would explode.

Silva's fought pretty poor competition.

You've got Franklin who's a total gatekeeper now. Marquardt got cut from the UFC. Cote got cut. Leites got cut. Lutter is a complete joke. Belfort hasn't done anything but crush cans since he was in PRIDE. Maia is a great stylistic matchup for Silva. All those guys either have 0 wrestling at all or tried to outstrike Silva. Okami's okay, but that's not really an impressive win.

Hendo (who would beat Silva if they fought at 205, IMHO) and the lucky win over Sonnen are Silva's only 2 good wins.

Finally, someone who's seen through the veil of propaganda. Let's not forget about X-Arm competitor James "The Sandman" Irvin, friend.

The fallacy of "there are no easy fights in the UFC" must to come to an end. That legacy is soft.

Instead of addressing that list name by name, let's make this easier.

Tell me who Anderson should have been fighting. Who should he have fought in 2006 other than Rich Franklin, who was the CHAMPION at the time, not the gatekeeper that he is 6 years later? Who should he have fought instead of Marquardt, Cote, Leites, Lutter, Maia, and Belfort when he fought them?

I want names. Who are the people that were in title contention when those fights happened that got passed over? Not now that it's 2012- but who should he have been fighting in 2006, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11? What would have made you happy? 9 fights in a row against Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen?

Hitman's gonna have a hard time defending that house of cards when Anderson Goldberg loses on Saturday.

much like Goldberg, Anderson's only marketable because of his win streak due to clever booking.

What I see from a few posters here is the same thing I saw with Fedor before and right after he lost to Werdum. I see people who disliked either the fighter himself, or were sick of dealing with that fighter's fans.

Same arguments. "Fedor was a Japanese can crusher in Japan." "He fought nothing but has-beens after his PRIDE run." Blah, blah, blah. None of it true.

Then you'd see people going through and discounting Fedor's wins against Big Nog or Mirko that happened in 2004 or 2005 because those guys had faded several years later.

Just admit you don't like the guy, or you don't like his fans, and admit that that's the chief reason why you devalue his career so much. Admit it to yourself at the very least. It's pretty obvious to everyone else already.

thefro's argument has one flaw. I would not consider a 185 lb. Hendo a good win. The man starved himself to make weight. He beat Anderson handily in the first round and in the second round it showed. We all know Hendo does not belong in that weight class at his age. The only thing a win over a Hendo that gassed in 6 minutes proves is that Anderson is on par with Jake Shields.

and with that said, Anderson's only valid win would be over Chael. A very narrow one that will be erased on July 7th with 25 full minutes of truth.

Hey- I like Chael a lot. I wouldn't mind him winning at all. I just don't think it should have some massive bearing on Anderson's career status as a fighter. Most people who aren't blinded by a personal hatred of the guy or his fans agree with me on this one.

Oh, and I still haven't been given any names of fighters that Anderson should have been fighting from 2006-present. Still waiting on that one.

Psst, you're being trolled. They're making these arguments because of what happened to Fedor. Silva jumped over Fedor for GOAT because those same arguments being used against him today were used widespread to discredit Fedor's decade of dominance.

It's all for naught though. We all know Jon Jones will be the GOAT when the dust settles.

Names.

Who should he have fought? Give me top guys from each year 2006-present that he was allowed to avoid in favor of the guys he fought.

Srsly?

Are you f***ers trolling me?

Am I that gullible?

Probably.

Silva's a great fighter, I just don't buy him as the "Greatest of All Time" or the "Greatest Pound for Pound fighter!". I think Jones, GSP, Ben Henderson, JDS, and Aldo would all beat Silva if they were all natural 185 pounders. Anderson's benefited from being in a very weak weight class. I would have liked to see him move up to 205 and challenge himself against bigger fighters like Fedor and Hendo have done.

Like Fedor, he's getting overrated because of his reputation and because of the hype machine.

The jig is up. I would like to thank Latvian Hitman for being the perfect pawn in the great Anderson/Fedor debate of 2012. Replacing "Anderson" with "Fedor" in his posts validate many arguments so very eloquently in this fickle world of MMA unfairly analyzed in the rear view.

In the end the only parallels you will not be able to draw between Anderson and Fedor is the excitement they brought to the table. Name one boring Fedor fight. Now think of all the times Anderson was booed and warned for stalling.

Fedor, the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, as proven on 4th of July weekend by the patriotic hero known as Chael P. "Vai Cavalo" Sonnen.

God bless God.

MMA-GAFer Tim Boetsch stopped Okami in rd 3. Silva did it in rd 2 so I guess he is slightly better than the Barbarian.

Edit: Oh shit the jig is up. Nm.

Edit 2: Oh shit, I used the same phrase as heel even though I hadn't gotten to his post yet. MMA-GAF Hive Mind complete.

Jesus. You guys saw me comin'

I feel so used.

Oh. I see whats happening in here. Carry on.

No kidding- if not for dabig2 giving me the head's up, I'd have been at this all day.

In my defense- I've spent the last decade doing my MMA-talk time on Sherdog, where people post stuff like this and mean it. I just automatically went into Shertard mode without accounting for the higher average IQ here.

Lesson learnt.

How does he have no chance? Did he all of a sudden get worse than last time they fought? Did Silva get better?

The only argument is if you really believe Silva fought with jacked up ribs during the first fight.

One of these fighters is not like the other, one of these fighters does not belong.

First person to identify the champion I am referring to receives the gift of mma friendship.

You've passed the initiation. Welcome to MMA-GAF.

Welcome to the fold, friend. You're a good sport. We only have one Sherdog-minded reject in our ranks, but he promises to leave forever after Anderson loses.

And on record, I really do think Chael will beat Anderson. I also have a well documented history of being wrong.

How dare you break character. I wish i was a mod so i could tag you with 'babyface'. Smh.

Just watched the press conference today. Did Silva have some lame ass crew there to clap after everything he said, that ish was super weak.

Sonnen was hillarious and awesome as usual.

I concur friend. I was ready to go down with the ship in routine. SMH

I had to break kayfabe, friends. Lowering myself to Natch's mentality to prove a point is fruitless labor. Anyone with sound mind between their ears knows the truth behind TGF's reign.

Face is back.

I agree- I've felt for a while that Anderson's style doesn't match up well with his advancing years. This seems to be as good of a spot as any for it to catch up to him.

Yeah, losing to Chael at this point in his career doesn't have a ton of bearing on his legacy. He's just the right guy at the right time. As you said, a purebread wrestler in their prime had never presented themselves in the past as #1 contender.

Some people just need to realize Anderson is a 37 year old MMA fighter who has relied on quickness.

They all lose in the end. Time and tide wait for no man.
