No, but I'm saying if Sonnen is using racically coded language to get title shots, then why hasn't he for Jon Jones, who's also a black man?
Why did they point out him calling Jones a little, entitled, bratty kid and not his praise for him?
The situations leading to the shots are different. When Chael was promoting for Silva he needed something to seperate him from the rest in the public's mind. So not only did he trash talk but he trash talked in a way to garner support. It's a classic heel tactic because no matter what you say, there's going to be contingent that agrees with your bs.
But why go with bottom rung material like that? Stuff that was obviously borderline hatespeech. He's not a stupid man so he knows how that came across. He did it because he thought there was a contingent of fans that would eat it up and he was right. He became a name based on the trash talk alone and his performance in the first fight simply cemented him there.
He doesn't have to do that as much with Jones because he's established his name already. I mean he didn't even have to fight at LHW once to get this fight. No one wanted Jones. So he's got the fight and with the fallback career of announcer in the bag he's set no matter what. All he needs to do now is stoke the coals a bit while distancing himself from his more offensive persona just enough so that when he transfers over to announcer he can transition to the charismatic nice guy persona he's been cultivating ever since he put on the Blazer and sat behind the desk.
It's fine for a fighter to be mean and ornery. But sports analysts need to be charismatic and friendly to last. Look at guys like Lederman and how their popularity has dropped as fans lose respect for them when they're jerks.
