UFC 165 |OT| ABBA a little faith in Gustafsson

Wow fight highlights to begin Sunday morning SportsCenter. They're usually lucky to get a mention at all.

UFC kind of lucked out because all of the college football games yesterday were terrible. It was really the best night to have a fight of the year, in terms of ESPN coverage alone.

People can still refuse fights. Jones refused the Sonnen fight at first which ended up getting an entire PPV cancelled.

Jones refused to fight Sonnen on 8 days notice. Sonnen was also not only not the number 1 contender, he wasn't even a LHW. Refusing to fight a clear number 1 contender (which Gus would be once Glover is out of the way) is a different story.

Personally I hope Jones takes longer to rehab than expected and we end up with Glover/Gus for the interim title. I want there to be Interim champions in every division.

They didn't even have the official rankings at that point in time so the comparison doesn't really apply. The point of the example was just to illustrate that fighters can refuse match ups. In fact, the rankings themselves were probably instituted specifically so the UFC can further leverage fighters but Dana still can't force guys to fight.

Even if it's not official rankings, Bones turning down a Gus rematch would probably end up with him being stripped of the title. Dana and co. knew the Chael fight was a cluster fuck which is why they didn't hold that against him. Different circumstances, especially when Bones ended up fighting Chael anyway, he just wanted proper prep time.

Gus and Jones will both get 6 months suspension.

I like Anderson Silva, GSP, Dominick Cruz, Mayweather. Jones didn't win that fight

Cruz hasn't even fought in two years

wouldn't exactly call him a dominant champion. I wouldn't even call him a champion. It's embarrassing when someone doesn't fight for two years and still holds a belt.

It should result in a title being stripped but in an organization where Cruz still holds the belt despite not fighting for 2 years, who knows what would happen. Cruz had an injury but 2 years is way more time than he should have to rehab it and keep the belt. Jones could easily give an excuse to dodge a rematch and fight someone else.

For what it's worth I don't think he would dodge it completely. He's way too concerned about his reputation and I think that's why he took the Chael fight eventually.

I think Dana and co. are stuck in this "You shouldn't lose your title due to an injury" thing, but Cruz is really testing the limits of it. I don't think they expected a guy with a belt to be out this long. It's become ridiculous but now they have to stick to their guns instead of admitting it was a mistake.

That was a hell of a fight...I would have been satisfied with either outcome in the decision, as it really seemed like that close of a match to me. Had round 1 for Gus for sure, and 4 and 5 for Jones, with 2 and 3 being a tossup--but that seems like the general consensus.

I did have Jones winning rounds 2, 4, and 5, and after re-watching the match I'm happy with that, though I agree a case could be made for either guy winning 2 and 3. I think anybody legitimately claiming this was a robbery has lost touch with what a real decision robbery is like (must not watch much boxing, I guess?), or perhaps they're just so excited about the prospect of the underdog taking out the "untouchable" champion that they can't accept the fact Jones was in a legitimate fight where he took more damage than ever before, and still came out victorious.

It seems when you go so long looking dominant, even the smallest amount of adversity is tantamount to a defeat. Granted, this was a whole lotta adversity. If nothing else, at least we can stop using a failed armbar attempt by Vitor and a single punch by Machida as examples of Jon Jones being tested. This here was legit...

ummmm Bendo/Pettis?

are you comparing a 5 rd war to a quick submission win? apples and oranges bro. if you wanted pettis to win and he won that's great, but it doesn't mean the fight delivered the goods. perhaps you were happy with the outcome, but pettis hendo 1 it was not.

Just because a fight isn't a 5 round war doesn't mean it didn't deliver... IMO the UFC is on a roll with the amount of great main events they've had.

Well obvs you're not gonna get a lot of main events that are FOTY candidates
diaz/daley, maynard/edgar II and III, pettis/hendo 1, shogun/hendo, gsp/condit, these are just quick off the top of my head main event FOTY contenders in the last year or 3.

Despite the shitty outcome, we can all agree that this was the first time in a loooooong time that the main event delivered
The outcome was correct. Is the minimum bar for delivering an all-time scrap? It was the best main event I'd seen since Shogun-Hendo, but that doesn't mean that these two--
First time since UFC 164, and 162.
--didn't deliver as well.

EDIT: If we're talking FOTY quality for a main event, then yeah, this is the first to deliver that in a while.

Yeah but when you look at the high level that they are at, a lot of times the fights will be more tactical and not taking that many risks. The majority of the time the main card fights are more exciting than the main event

I don't think they need an immediate rematch. Jones convincingly won those last 2 rounds. If Gus wants to beat Bones, his stamina needs to match his work rate, he needs more stopping power, and he needs to learn to avoid some spinning elbows/head kicks. The lack of heavy hands really kills Gus I think, its become more and more obvious but we really saw it last night when Bones was basically able to walk forward all night. Even with all the damage that Gus did to Bones's face, it was Gus who usually had to back up or run away. Give Glover his shot, let Gus beat someone, and set up the rematch next year if Jon still has the belt.

I could understand an quick rematch if it was a bad decision, or it had been Gus to get the decision, but with Jones winning and being fairly dominant in the last 2 rounds it doesn't seem necessary outside of potential money.

I think Jones won the fourth but it's not like Alex gassed and Jones overtook him. Jon landed a good shot in the last 30 seconds or so, then tried to pour on the pressure but Gus was able to survive and reset. Until that point Gus had been dominating the round.

If that elbow had happened in the 1st or 2nd round ... I think Jones would have finished Gus. They were both running on fumes at that point.

Obviously earlier on in the fight it would have been much harder to land that elbow I believe.
