UFC 165 |OT| ABBA a little faith in Gustafsson

To clarify: I personally think Davis has enough room for improvement to be a contender. Whether he does or not, time will tell.

He ran a lot early in the fight. He actually hurt his striking as a result, because he didn't cut the ring down on Jones. He was clearly better in boxing, but everytime he ran away, he let Jones get the angle on him. When he stood and boxed, he used his angles well. I don't think the judges had it wrong. It's probably why the judges gave Jones the 1st round. PEACE.

You are not a beast, get over it. BEAST.

nah after his "fight" with machida you could easily see that he doesn't go in with a fighter's mentality, he doesn't go in there to fight, he just goes in to "win".

Who here has had enough of Jones's cheap oblique kicks and sticking his open hand right in his opponent's face repeatedly while putting his fingers dangerously close to their eyes?

oh and M.O.B:

I thought the fight represents the best of UFC and the absolute worst of UFC, those 5 rounds and that judging basically sum up everything that UFC is and has become.

Kudos to the guys for really delivering a fantastic fight, everything else was utter shit. No wonder PPV numbers are done from years ago, people just get burned on these horrible judging calls. Well done to Jones and Gustafsson for a great fight, they did their part, shame everyone else failed at theirs.

In all seriousness Jones deserved the fucking win IMO. I have to watch that 2nd round again but I'm pretty sure Jones won it and the rest of them were pretty clear for one guy or the other.

Had Alex winning rounds 1,2,3. He got robbed.

Ugh, people with their robbery crap. When a fight is insanely close, nobody gets robbed. There is very little disagreement out there that Gus won the first and Bones won the 4th and 5th. The 2nd and 3rd could very easily be called either way. Hell, Fightmetric scored both the 2nd and 3rd rounds 10-10.

I'm Swedish, understand my disappointment.

The only reason jbj won was that Nike and Gatorade money. Young Gus whooped that ass. I'm waiting for his rocky 2 moment.

Jbj was prolly telling him post fight that they won't be no rematch. He wants to go back to fighting past their prime pugs.

vio-friend, did you know that gatorade didn't even give jbj any money for that? they just allowed him to wear the logo. it's like gatorade was feeding his ego, lol

jbj covets those logos like nothing else

srsly. they need to go watch shogun/machida 1 or pacquiao/bradley to see a real robbery..

i did not know that. i read an article earlier in the week on espn that jones had signed on with gatorade. i assumed money had changed hands.

gus did more damage. he won. jbj fans will have to learn how to deal. its pretty obvious he was winning his fights because he had an 8" reach advantage and towered over his opponents. matched up with a dude his own size that could wrestle and strike he had a world of problems.

Nah, more like Rocky 4. Jones will be all but retired. Gus the monster from a european country (looks kinda like lundgren too). Gus will have to beat Greg Jackson to a pulp to draw him back out.

Just saw the fights. I had it 2, 4, 5 Jones. He really stole the 4th, he was getting beat till he landed that elbow and changed the tide. Jones really needs to work on his striking for sure.

Also Wineland v Barao was stopped way too early. Let em fight man! Wineland wasn't doing bad till that terrible stoppage. The kick didn't even land flush ala Rockhold v Belfort, the follow up shot looked like it landed cleaner.

most impressive moment of last night's fight was after Young Mauler got caught with that elbow with 40 seconds remaining in the 4th round, he stuffed 2 takedowns, ate a few knees, and still was on his feet. very impressive. that could have cost him the fight tho, because he was dominating that round up until that point. he landed some really nice strikes throughout that round.

Jones exposed... but only as human. That said, anyone who tries to downplay the importance of his reach from now on is in straight denial. The octagon favours longer, evasive fighters, no corners and plenty of room to move. Gus made that work but his everything was on point as well. I thought he'd tire trying to fight the perfect fight against Jones but Jon only overtook him after that elbow.

there is so much salt everywhere over gus losing

I can see why but still felt that the fight went to jones. People need to remember that jones remained the aggressor for the majority of the fight. Yeah he got caught, especially when he attempted to fleetingly use his reach advantage(which was nonexistent this fight but it was a force of habit). Jones just worked him harder overall despite being outboxed and outwrestled(early on). The game changer was def the leg kicks.

No way. Those were Running Man Condit baby leg kicks for the most part. The game changer was the spinning elbow. Jones doesn't land that, Gus doesn't get rocked, Jones doesn't get that offence off in the clinch and steal the 4th. Gus also isn't then completely rat-arsed going into the 5th. If the fight had kept going as it had through most of the fourth and Jones had still won then that would have been an indisputable robbery. As it was I feel the fifth was damn close.

Have to disagree about Jones working harder too. I thought he may have had more volume, but once again what he was throwing wasn't full bore. When Goldberg mentioned that Gus had more sig. strikes I was surprised but thought that cemented his lead. Then came that elbow. Whole fight turned on a dime.

Who here has had enough of Jones's cheap oblique kicks and sticking his open hand right in his opponent's face repeatedly while putting his fingers dangerously close to their eyes?
Me. I would gladly trade foot stomps and knee kicks for knees to the head of a downed opponent. Ref warned them both for fingers but seemed to be only calling out Jones towards the end. Pretty sure California bans those kicks. Seems to be a Winklejohn special, Machida and Anderson use it a fair bit too.

JBJ looked like a california raisin by the end of the fight.

JBJ top offensive output was
1. lowkicks trying to hyperextend his knee
2. eye pokes
3. hellbow in the 4th round

he was pretty ineffective throughout the fight. that hellbow in the 4th round was like bendo landing that upkick in round 1 of edgar 1.

jones was straight beat up.

Call me crazy, but I don't know how so many people have Jones winning the fourth. He got completely outstruck for the vast vast majority of that round. And say what you like, Gus survived the end of it. Jones won 30 seconds of that round. That's it.

Seems like all the professional MMA analysts scored the fight for Jones while armchair analysts and casual fans scored it for Gus. Not that shocking to be honest.

This was the Rocky 1 fight. I wanna see the Rocky 2 fight now.

Bones doesn't want to be in the cage again against Gus, but I bet Gus will.

indeed. he don't want no rematch.

I gotta rewatch the fight, but I think R1 went to Gus, R4 and 5 went to Jones pretty clearly. R2 and 3 are a little more debatable. During the fight, I scored 3-2 Jones, but I can see people seeing 4-1 Jones and 3-2 Gus.

I almost hope that Bones would have KO'd or subbed Gus. When things go to judges I do not know how someone can be happy. When judges get things right, there would have not been any need for them. I wanna rematch now that they know each other better.

Great fight. Was rooting like mad for my boy Gustavsson, but i don't think he did enough to take the belt. Crazy close fight though. I think that elbow in the fourth won him the fight.

Hopefully this fight can settle the "Jones only destroys guys who are clearly smaller" debate.

Uhm, how would this fight settle that debate?

Bones Jones really does look like a different fighter when he's not carving up aging legends of the Ultimate. Maybe they can feed him Kevin Randleman or Mo Smith next to help rehab his image.

Hear me out friend. Jones fights glower TeX next. After submitting glower, Jones flips of hack and chuck and disrespects the pit. Chuck comes put of retirement to defend his camps honor. Recycling storylines always works. Worked for Tito and Ken (:

This is so good. I can already picture Iceman Chuck hanging over the cage, screaming at Bones Jones.

Solid main card. Main Event is a complete toss up in my opinion, call it a draw for all I care, good fight. A rematch would be great.

Checkin out the prelims now.
