UMVC3: Phoenix Wright and Nova Revealed!

Pretty much none of my MvC2 team (Cyke/Psylocke/Rogue) made it in, and I honestly couldn't be happier about it. I'm glad that more characters with unique movests are getting in rather than the same characters I've been playing as for the past decade.
 
Holy shit this is amazing. The fact that he can call Maya for help is so good fan service. His level 3 is also hilarious.

The evidence stuff does seem gimmicky though.

Is it too early to start complaining that they're taking too long with the Rocket Raccoon reveal?

I have to tell you, though - as a huge Nova fan, I'm happy with how he looks and his move set. I'm also thrilled that he seems to move pretty fast - sudden jets into position have always been his forte in the comics.

This isn't MvC2, though. In 2, Wolverine was LT. Now he's godlike.

Most of Shuma's moves being charging actually makes him really crippled - he doesn't have immediate access to 2 of his 3 specials, which actually are pretty important to him. He suffers a lot from that.

That's a mistranslation. The nerf is only for Zero/Ammy as far as blocking during air dash and the only part of air dash that is nerfed is the down/back. The rest of the changes on air dashes are in fact by a character to character basis.

I don't pretend to theoryfight as well as you but, it seems Nick's stance meter lasts a really long time, much longer than any other character with a metered mode. I suppose that could provide enough time to do some serious damage to the other team if he has the tools.

Yeah but he's not that good without it. It's basically the thing that you are playing for in the game.... getting Wright into god mode so you can control the game. Also it instantly disappears after activating his LVL3. He doesn't have any full screen 50/50 or insane mix up to open opponents up that fast to kill their entire team. So many characters in the game can super jump up, fly and toss fireballs until the meter runs out.

Maybe we'll see. I know next to nothing about Wright and I am very wary about even commenting on him. Like I said the range for his viability is too much for anyone to make a logical guess on it. Nova is more solid and easier to tell where he would be.

And Magneto's LVL3, which has no prerequisite to it kills, Phoenix in 1 shot with his LVL3. And it hits everywhere so Phoenix has to think twice about pressing a button. Hawkeye too his LVL1 hits everywhere and is instant plus can be linked together.

The DP era has pretty much ended or at least she isn't going to be a dominant force in tournament anymore. 90% of the system wide changes in UMVC3 were made to nerf Phoenix. Nerfed X factor scaling/damage, decreased timer on XF, TACs changed up, meter gain reduced, snap back duration increased, raw tag ins no longer hit overhead, Phoenix herself nerfed, characters given meter stealing moves and other stuff.

Well, ideally you hit plain Phoenix with the Objection attack as late as possible to have the full stance ready. It looks like you decide on your own when to trigger the Turnabout. I'll admit, I don't know the range of Gravity Squeeze, is it also full screen?

But yeah, now that you mention it, a lot of the changed things for UMvC3 seem to go against Dark Phoenix, which is not completely uncalled for either. I always hope that fighting game end up with a decent character variety of usable characters, and Dark Phoenix was a bit of an outlier. Fun to play as, mind you, not so much to end up on the bad side of, though. I hope she still sees some use, I'd miss "JEEEEAAANNNN!" just a little, I think.

Also it just hit me (then comboed into a launcher) that of all characters to have a comeback mechanic, Phoenix Wright is the perfect one to have it. Consider his own games, they're all about snatching victory from the jaws of defeat at the very last moment while Cornered blares. So of course he can do this in UMvC3.
 
I still say this game should have 60+ characters.

There is no reason why it shouldn't have all the Marvel 2 characters at some point. The Marvel vs. Capcom series is in the god tier of fan service video games, alongside Smash Bros. Just throw everyone in there for fuck sakes, enough with the politics.

On another note it would be pretty cool to see sigma in the game, it would give zero a rival character as well he could have a crazy ass move set.

All characters could block on a forward airdash from what I can remember. It was only back airdashes and tridashes that were vulnerable. Now it's sounding like you can't block out of ANY airdash for any character.

I block after an airdash all the time with Dante, so it's not just them. I can check them out in training mode real fast and show results.
 
You can't just "throw" in a character... it's not that simple. MVC2 had relevant characters for it's time, a lot of them just aren't relevant anymore or popular or just simply overshadowed by a better character.

Sounds like a universal thing to me.

Not to mention, it was my understanding for MvC2 they just took a ton of pre-existing sprites from other games and beefed them up a bit for the Marvel dynamic. That way they could figuratively just throw characters in.

Except for the fact that there aren't sprites this game can use like MvC2. Not entirely about politics.
 
Blocking DURING an air dash and blocking AFTER an air dash are two completely different things.

Zero and Ammy could block before their air dashes even finished or before they canceled into anything. Other characters have to like cancel out of their dash with a normal and then block. Zero/Ammy could do it whenever. It was sort of balanced in the sense that they had really slow dashes to begin with.

They got to 50 compared to the 56 in MVC2, and without the advantage of copy pasting sprites from other games. I think they did well really.
 
Eidrian can you explain Nova's special moves? Like does he go into a stance before them or can he like charge them or are they just standard specials with an input? Does he have an 8 way air dash?

Also how does his Gravimetric moves work? Is there anything other thing he gains on his moves that take up red health aside from more damage?

Yeah. The VS games were originally enabled by recycling - ironically much as is happening with SFXT. Folks say that Capcom is spending all their cash on that... but would it really be happening if they had to make the 22 Street Fighter characters from scratch?

MVC3 was always going to be a reboot of sorts cuz of the complexity and expense of making all the characters from scratch. For all that folks joke about Mortal Kombat and content vs MVC3, I kind of doubt that any one character in MK, for example, was as complex to design, model, animate, and balance as most MVC3 characters. Guys like Dante alone must have been monumental tasks.

It's something to keep in mind every time someone says "why can't my favorite Darkstalker be in, who transforms into 10 different things and morphs every single other character in the game, along with my wish list of 12 other characters I wanna see?"

Now if you want a game with 86 characters and everybody's favorite, you wait for MVC4 where they can re-use base models and animation data.

I don't think it's that difficult to make some new models. Clearly there's demand for Gambit, Megaman X, and Venom, but it's politics that's keeping them out of the game. Release them as DLC ffs, it's free money.

Nick and Rocket will be the new best bffs, someone should edit that Wolverine pic with Nick and RR.

Depending on how well the bear trap assist works, I can imagine that together with his Maya super he'll have enough time to collect all the evidence he needs if he's lucky enough.

No kidding, all he needs is someone to pelt the enemy at range while he scurries around, then. Hm, Doom? Doom is never a bad choice for assists.
 
What's with all this air dash talk, we already had this discussion back when Jintor was posting changes to the game from the build he has.

First off, more than Zero/Ammy could block during airdash. Spider-Man, I believe Morrigan, and anyone else who had an extended airdash could typically block out of them.

Had Jintor test as many characters as we could think of and none of them could block out of airdash in Ultimate.


And could 8-way airdash characters every block during airdash? They were so fast and usually canceled with an attack. I can't think of any instance of them blocking out of it.

It's not just new models, it's move set planning, animations, hit box programming, balancing, play testing, voice acting and possible rights issues. So many characters get turned down because Marvel just doesn't want them in (like Venom).
