Uncharted 2 vs Mass Effect 2: Which game had the best single player experience?

I agree. People laud ME2's story but I have to ask, what story? It was literally, "The reapers are coming. Go recruit a team and kill the reapers."

Beyond that it was just you recruiting characters for the entire game. I'm not saying Uncharted 2 had some Oscar worthy writing, but it never professed to be that.

Have you ever read a series of short stories? That were all of a really high-quality? And at the end they all tie together in this incredible ending? That's Mass Effect 2.

Except the very very last part sucks but it's still better than the Indiana Jones rip off you watched after.

Tough call for me, they're pretty even. If I have to pick one, I'll go with Uncharted 2 as it's more polished overall. But there are things about ME2's single player that I like more than U2.

Storywise I'd say Mass Effect 2.
Overall... I guess I'd also say ME2 but both were close when considered a complete package. ME2 got me really hooked, I think I invested 80 hours in that game.

"Uncharted 2 obviously"
"Mass Effect 2 of course"
"Uncharted 2, why is this a question?"
"Is this a joke? Mass Effect 2 by far."

I remember when Uncharted 2 was released back in 2009, it still being a relatively new IP, became the PlayStation biggest newest IP. And now the Uncharted IP is one of the biggest PlayStation franchises, perhaps one of the biggest gaming franchises of these times.

I remember back after Uc2 released, a few months later came Me2 and in the words of LP from technobuffalo, "shared Uc2's pedestal." Indeed, they both have a 96 on metacritic.

then Greg Miller comes out with this stupidass article about how Me2's better than Uc2, (not saying Me2 isn't > Uc2, in fact I can't say which one is better, which is why I made this thread, but we'll get to that later) and he says how the one time he felt the suspense in Uc2 "...wasn't until the "grenade scene" near the end of Uncharted 2 that I really had an "OMG, what happens next?!?!" moment. Meanwhile, Mass Effect 2 is filled with those moments."

And je also talks about how you can actually put some input on the campaign while Uncharted doesn't let you meddle with the story at all whatsoever, and that's why ultimately Me2 got a slightly higher score than Uc2. However, the only reason I'm calling him out on all this is because this same fucking guy gives Uc3 a 10/10. Uh, so now it's better than Mass Effect even though you still give no input during the playthrough?

Anyways, for myself, I think both of these games are among the defining games of the 7th generation, and I really can't tell which has the better story. I also had to wait over a year after release to play Me2 since it was a timed 360 exclusive. I admit the replay value of Uc2 mostly came with the multiplayer, and Me2's replay value came with being able to play it differently.

What do you say?

I feel like its an unfair comparison. But I enjoyed both

That's not really fair.

I love reading these responses that are so certain, but no one is taking snipes at the other game.

They are both very different games that appeal to different people. Whether you like one more than the other, I think they're both game of generation contenders so really who cares?

....but Mass Effect 2 is better.

Weird comparison. Action RPG vs TPS, branching vs linear, large cast vs small cast.

Both are pretty outstanding in their genres in my eyes. If I had to choose, I'd say Uncharted 2.

Have you ever read a series of short stories? That were all of a really high-quality? And at the end they all tie together in this incredible ending? That's Mass Effect 2.

Sure bud

i have my problems comparing different games i both love for different things, because they are different.
if i have to chose it would be uncharted. maybe another day it would be mass effect.

Why are you comparing Mass Effect 2 and Uncharted 2 anyway? They're not even remotely the same other than "3rd person shooter" which is a blanket statement.

Mass Effect 2 is great, but I have to give it to Uncharted 2. It's up there for one of the best paced games ever made; the kind where you finish it in one or two sittings because everything flows so well and you never get tired of it.

Uncharted 2, easily. It's just one of those rare experiences to be had each gen. The way it played, it's narrative/cutscenes, and how the action played out in set pieces in gameplay that made it something truly special. ME has nothing really on it. Only game to mention "experience" wise to it would be, TLoU, another Naughty Dog game.

I guess this is a good time for me to ask, why aren't we allowed to make threads with polls? This thread would've been for that.

Now, those of you saying, Me2 is not a shooter, you have to be kidding yourselves. Shepard is holding a fucking gun on the cover. If I brought this game to a friend and said, 'hey you should try this out!' and he's like, 'na I'm kinda tired of shooters altogether.' if I said to him, 'don't worry it's not a shooter.' and he sits down and plays the game, 30 minutes in he's going to say 'I thought you said this isn't a shooter.' 'it's not.' 'well then why is there a gun in my hand and i'm shooting at things?' So yeah. Me2 is a 3rd person shooter, and this is the case whether or not you choose to acknowledge it.

Also, to all of you guys saying things like, this is a weird, unnecessary, unfair, nonsensical comparison... well, that is the point of a comparison. To compare two different things, that may share a similarity or similarities. And the more different (and spectacular) the product, the more interesting the comparison. And this is the ultimate comparison for last generation gaming. Because...

-Both of these games are part of IPs that debuted last generation.
-Both had predecessors that came out in 2007.
-Both of these games were exclusive (Me2 was a 360 console exclusive for a year, like I said I had to wait over a year after release to play it), which added tremendous value to the consoles at the time.
-Both of these games garnered not only GOTY accolades, but GOAT as well.
-Both of these games came out a certain (but close) time frame in the 7th gen. Q4 2009/Q1 2010
-Both of these games have a whopping 96 on metacritic.
-Both of these games feature 3rd person shooting.
-Both of these games have
critically acclaimed
story as a main focus. But last but not least...
-Both of these games have absolutely stellar, single player experiences. That was the title of this thread, and that's why these games are being compared.

Yes, as far as entertainment goes they are different genres (action adventure/sci fi), and even as video games they are as well ( action adventure platformer/action adventure RPG), but the campaigns for both of these games were arguably the best things about it, and at the end of the day, one of them has to be the better product, right?
I don't even know the answer to that.

and I myself have been torn about which game I think is better, because of that. They're both my favorite games ever. I can't figure out for myself which one is #1 and #2. I found that I replayed Me2 many more times because of the player choices, but that did get exhaustive for numerous reasons, some that you guys already mentioned in this thread. And it doesn't mean I wouldn't go back and replay Uc2, but there were things about that game that annoyed me as well, namely how it just turned into waves and waves of enemies at certain parts.

However, while Me2 can be replayed with different choices, Uc2 had multiplayer which to this day might not be as big as it was. I also don't know about this MP patch y'all are mentioning but it sounds pretty bad/took some fun away.

However, looking through the 10 pages of this thread, it is blatantly clear that there is no consensus on this comparison. Me2 had more freedom in playing, but it's writing was most definitely worse than Uc2. Uc2 had better graphics and told its story better, but did get repetitive with the shooting. So I dunno, there did seem to be a fair amount of you who couldn't decide, so... can we agree with Metacritic and just say these games are just equally two of the greatest games of all time?

And I'm proud to be an owner of both of these games.

Dont make me decide youuu !

But i would rather replay ME2 than UC2
Hey man, I couldn't decide either. But yeah I've replayed Me2 way more times than Uc2.
Making me choose between Uncharted and Mass Effect is one of the cruelest things you could ever do to me, OP.
Well, now you know how I feel.
So it's even older than I thought? Wow. So again why are we linking to and discussing such an obscure and poorly written ancient article? What a bizarre way to start a thread.
If you read my entire OP, which it seems like you did at least in part, then you in full why I included the Greg Miller article.

Back in 2009 was when the Ps3 was having its full turnaround in the market, and at the end of the year is when Uc2 dropped. I never played Uc1, knew pretty much nothing about uncharted, and IGN's review sold me on the game and I loved it. A few months later came Me2, which, reception-wise, seemed like Uc2 all over again, only on the 360. And IGN gave the game a measly .1 score higher than Uc2.

And I distinctly remember Greg Miller than coming out with that article about Uc2 and Me2. So there's his reasons for saying Me2 > Uc2, however, then when Uc3 came out and HE reviewed it, I immediately thought of what he said back 2 years prior. If Me2 is > than Uc2 for the reasons he stated, then there's no way Uc3 > Me2, but the mothafucker gives it a perfect fucking score. I was doing it merely to point out how it looks so hypocritical. Yes, it is 5 years old, but the words in the articles and reviews don't change. The games don't change. Our opinions of them, and the games, might.

Love both games, but It's Uncharted 2 for me. I played through it six times and adored the co-op multiplayer.

[edit] Just wanted to add that every time I see these VS style posts I picture the OP as Mr Burns saying, "dance my pretties" :)
Well, to be honest I'm still new to this gaf thing, I hoped the thread would gain some traction, but I'm pleased to see it got 10 pages of votes and discussion. It's pretty awesome.

I'm sure that's accurate. I love it though. I find it strangely enjoyable reading 20 posts alternating between with "It's not even close Uncharted 2!", "It's not even close Mass Effecf 2!".
Which is evidence at least to me, how equally great these two games are. =]

Only on gaf do I see arguments that Mass Effect is a better-controlling TPS than Uncharted. I love this forum. :P
I'm pretty sure gaf is the biggest video gaming forum out there. This is where you'll get most video game opinios on the internet. If it's anywhere online you'll see arguments of ME being a better controlled tps than uncharted, it's here.
well, maybe youtube comments. but that's also fanboy galore

Uncharted 2 executes what it attempts to do much MUCH better than ME2. They are very different games but comparing each in their respective genres and U2 is probably the best or one of the best ever TPS.

ME2 aims higher but its not a great RPG nor is it a great shooter.

No question U2.
I'm sorry I did not realize Me2 was considered to be not a great RPG. What about it makes a bad RPG game?

The Lair of the Shadow Broker is the best dlc I've ever played. Rolling that boss fight as a shotty-wielding Vanguard is glorious and puts to shame the awful bullet sponge of the forever boss at the end of the train level :

Same, was completely worth buying. I was honestly floored the 1st time around. Like damn, this is some great content!

Uncharted 2 was the GOAT game that year..

I still remember when GameSpot gave game of the year to demon souls and I passed at first but that resulted me in basking in the glory that was demon souls and I understood why GA did what they did

To each their own and I only watched UC2 being played, but hot damn if ME2 was not one of the highlights of all my gaming.

ME2 was a game that FORCED me to play to the end. I simply had no choice, I had to see it all. I had to start a second save and play through again. I even started a 3rd and only stopped cuz I changed jobs and had to move during. For me that is as rare as a Unicorn in Harlem. I usually play games until i feel there is nothing 'new' left to experience.

ME2 was in my top 5 from last gen(Wii/PS3/360) without any reservation. The debate would be only if it should be number 1 or not ;)

As someone who has never played an uncharted game I can't particularly pick one over the other out of respect for each franchise. That being said, Mass Effect 2 at the time was awe-inspiring. The series in general was generation-defining for me so I look back it quite fondly.

Finished Uncharted 2 just this moment. My issues with the controls are similar to they ones with Assassin's Creed, in which I'll indicate Nate go one way and hell instead go another. The final boss fight sucked worse than ME2. Tree of Life sucks. I an forced to cover all angles, be sure to cover my ass, shoot some blue shit at just the right times, and keep myself from falling down crevices. Doing that on a controller sucks balls. Generally unenjoyabl ending. Those graphics and environments pretty much are it's saving grace for me.

The plot line and events are completely on a lower level then the character dialogue, but even Drake is a hypocritical bitch. Still, I do like the characters, however flat and predictable they are. They got some charm. Still, plot is far below Mass Effect, with all they inconsistencies and bullshit Drake and other characters suffer me through. "Drake did this even though it's easy to see he he could've done that, butit's to more the plot along." That seems to happen all the time and it's noticeable. Mass Effect 2 has so much substance I can overlook plenty of bull shit.

I'll try the third Uncharted. Right now.

I enjoyed Mass Effect 2 way more than Uncharted 2. I just loved the story and the characters in Mass Effect 2. The universe Bioware created for that game was superb.

I just love sci-fi

ME2 was my favorite RPG last generation.

I've only played UC1, back in 2010-2011, and it was one of the worst games I'd played that gen. From what I'd played of the UC2 demo, it was a lot better. Maybe I would have gotten it, but MvC3 came out and soured all of my feelings for the PS3 and I sold mine soon after. What a stupid mistake that was tho. And it was backwards compatible.

I'm not voting, ofc, but I'd like to throw in that ME2 was probably gotgeneration for me. And maybe it means something, depending on how UC relatively compares to UC2 for you.

Deep down I think it's Mass Effect 2. UC2 was straight greatness at the time, but when I look back on it now my feelings for it are brief. ME2 I still look back very fondly on and remember how I felt at certain parts of the game.

I always felt those two along with AssCreed 2 were the big trifecta of last gen.

ME2 was by far the more enjoyable game for me.

Also, maybe I am in the minority, but I would argue the shooting was superior in ME2 as well... (even with the way to convenient cover system)

This is like comparing a Big Mac with a good steak.

Yeah...the Big Mac is good and tasty....but it's nothing compared to a good steak with fried chips.

Bic Mac is Uncharted 2. The Steak is Mass Effect 2. Both are good and both have 10/10 taste in your mouth....but if somebody asks you for the quality you have no doubt.

pd: NOW I'M FUCKING HUNGRY DAMMIT.
