Uncharted 4: A Thief's End |OT| You're gonna miss this ass

Apart from the character story. I really loved the overall treasure hunt plot.

In previous Uncharteds I kinda just accepted the fact that they were taking me to whatever was next. But here I totally understood everything. And it really made sense the way we were following the path laid out 300 years before.

I was curious what a more 'light hearted, action oriented, death defying, set piece' type ND game would be like after TLOU and they pulled it off more perfectly than I could have ever imagined.

At this point the pressure must be overwhelming. Imagine being expected to deliver to this degree every time? Naughty Gods indeed.

I'm really hoping ND is working on some sort of science fiction IP, would love to see what they do with the genre.

Imagine what they could do with a Blade Runner-esque world.

Is it normal to be 7 chapters in and kinda.. bored?

the game plays itself too much. my presence is an inconvenience to the designers.

the presentation is nice but doesn't seem leaps and bounds ahead of TLOURM. It's easily identifiabl as a PS4 game. It stands out for the sheer elbow grease that went into detailed animations and so forth, but anyone who has said this is the best looking game ever made is crazy

I think I'm about 2/3's done with the game on Hard, it's been a great ride and crazy experience so far. I'm just pissed that I'm going to be traveling for work over the next few weeks and won't be able play :(

Uncharted 1 had zombies.
Uncharted 2 had Yetis/Blue wtf is this tanky spongy shit.
Uncharted 3 had spirits.

I'll pick Skeletons, it's cliche, but this is a pirate theme after all.

Pirate skeletons.

Thank god they didn't do anything like that though tbh.

The render modes and add-on features you can use post game are fucking unbelievable.

Much better than some other new game plus modes.

- Bullet Time
- Cell Shading
- Infinite Ammo
- Thief Mode (Detective Vision)
- Slow motion. I played during the truck dragging scene. Completely different experience.

Sooo much fun post game bonuses. And I haven't even touch multiplayer yet.

Got damn Naughty Dog. Got damn.

Finished chapter 16 and now to sleep and then work... :(

I already have a Top 10 of spectacular sequences.

My biggest complain is one that I think nobody has made yet:
They teased an erupting volcano in Madagascar but it never happened... Missed opportunity. -_-

Same exact feeling here.

Almost wrapped up Uncharted 3 again. After running through 1, 2, and 3.... man...4 just hits all the right notes for me. Pirate theme, overall tone of story, the new mechanics, more adventure and refined shooting. It's hard going back to the old ones after having a taste.

Now that I finished the game... Playing other story driven games feels weird..

In a way it kinda happen when TLOU came out. Right after I finished that game, I couldn't play other single player games for awhile lol.

After Chapter 5 of this game, there's nothing I want more from Naughty Dog than a cold blooded gunporn crime/heist shooter. Just that vibe for 10 hours.

I can reduce most of the game so far as.. cutscenes.. walk to place... interact with things... vague platforming/climbing where I'm constantly having my attention directed by the camera and my jumps steered by magical forces... occasional dull cover shootout... some braindead fistfights where I mash buttons and can't lose

the frequent jumps in locations also makes the game feel much less grounded than TLOU, which featured a mostly continuous experience.

I loved TLOU, and I think the ND formula of story driven third person action game works much better when it's more core and reigned in. All of the ridiculous platforming and jumps in locations and silly scenarios are just completely boring. My brain has disassociated itself from the game

Stop now. Lol

The game isn't for you.

, but anyone who has said this is the best looking game ever made is crazy

Yeah I think it is, and lots of people need to be called crazy.

There is an actual difference between just pumping frame rate, resolution and anti-aliasing vs the kind of "looking" displayed in UC4.

1080 and 30fps means it can never be the most impressive in horse power. To be just technically impressive you just need a high frame rate, higher resolution, more super-sampling. These are all fairly dumb things you just move a slider to do. But I think its pretty clearly the best looking game when you consider the overall impact of the geometry, lighting, animations, movement and little touches.

If that stuff isn't there to begin with it doesn't matter how high-res the screen is, it doesn't matter how much anti-aliasing or FPS there is, the lack of the accompanying amped up animations, physics, geometry and so on start to look more and more obvious. You show a 4k game, you need increases in everything else, and they don't increase. Even having mega texture packs aren't impressive, at least to me. Its more about material shaders lighting physics animation and how realistic and nuanced the people in the game are.

Turning (say) Witcher 3 up to warp speed on a 4k monitor just doesn't help when you notice how its world is put together.

Aside from the character faces and expressions I'm very underwhelmed with the graphics.

The story seemed disjointed at first but I'm around chapter 5 I think and it feels like it's just found its feed and is ready to tell me the story proper now

You're trying too hard. Also, just got to
Chapter 12. The whole ending of Chapter 11 with Elena busting Nate had me genuinely feeling sorry for everyone involved. Nate wants to save his brother, but Elena wants the man she loves to give us his adventurous life before it ends up taking his life.
This is a very mature story and you can see the influences TLOU has had on the production of UC4.

This game was a master piece. I felt it rounded up nicely all previous adventures in the franchise. Good intro, very nice ending. Great gameplay. Graphics were just plainly awesome, (I really wonder how they pulled that off on such hardware).

Now I moved unto the multiplayer and it's fun + 60 fps is great, might be a bit jarring to go back to the SP after that.

Wonder what they got planned for single player DLC.

I understand, but definitely push forward. You really haven't seen what the game has to offer in terms of gameplay yet. The opening few chapters are very cutscene heavy.

Also, the frequent jumps in location stop once you reach Madagascar.

Think I hit the perfect balance with aim assist at 3 and aiming sensitivity at 0.

Man this has been really good so far I think I am on chapter 8.

I agree that there is a ND touch when it comes to the extra elbow grease put into certain things, especially animations -- but there are also times when the game looks flatly dull. It's an inconsistent experience (though that can be said of most games).

I'm not saying it doesn't have an exceptional presentation, but saying it's the best ever is lunacy. ROTTR is another imperfect game and imperfect in its visuals, but at its best (on PC) it impressed me more than UC4 in the visuals department. I understand my PC is far more powerful than my PS4, but the only point I'm making is that UC4 is absolutely not the best looking game ever. Maybe if it were on PC it would be -- I don't know, but we'll never have that answer

Welp, Charted. 13 hours on Hard, 60 deaths, 657 kills.

Everything from ch.17 onward is fantastic and well worth the build-up and contrivances it took to get there. Final boss is like (RE4/UC4 spoiler)
Krauser Knife Fight taken to the next level
, so dope. Ending is just about perfect, obviously indulgent but this is the last time we're seeing these dudes like Return of the King so I'll allow it.

Still preferred TLOU for a variety of reasons, but clearly the best Uncharted and a GOTY contender, no doubt. Will have longer impressions/discussion tomorrow, but for now...sleep.

Played through the first 5 chapters tonight and love it so far. The graphics are incredible.

Got to the start of Chapter 11 when I called it for the night...until I decided to do the MP Trials and got hooked on that...and stuck.

Anyways I'm surprised how well I'm doing with the puzzles. I struggled with them in UC3 but I've breezed through them so far.

That Avery had somehow become immortal or a ghost or something and was guarding the treasure. For the whole fight with Rafe, you think his body is just laying there, but once Rafe is killed he rises to fight you.

OOOOOOOH, SPOOPY.

Is there a spoiler thread? I wanna talk about how many Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade references there are in this thing. Cuz they're everywhere.

Just beat the game on crushing, those last few chapters were brutal.

Those enemy encounters were pretty awful on crushing. I was actually dreading them by the end just hoping there would be no more. The last one took me about an hour to figure out and I got pretty lucky. Crushing was perfect though up until the island and all the armored assholes, I wanted to punch my monitor. There is a serious lack of ammo on crushing for the amount of enemies that get thrown at you. Stealth is basically useless unless you use it to cheese. Too many guys, if I did anything I would immediately get spotted and start the huge gunfight.

Perhaps I have lofty expectations due in no small part to everyone's hyperbole in regards to the graphics.

Yes they're very good considering the hardware, but best ever ?? I don't understand that personally

You haven't seen anything yet. The game opens up a lot more very soon. You've essentially just played through the introduction/tutorial.

I always hated the armored guys. In every Uncharted barring 1 since that didn't have any. I find it ridiculous that they could tank an explosion head on. I think that should be enough to kill.

These guys thought of everything.. Driving in the Jeep, they are chit chatting when a scripted moment happens. After the interrupted speech. Drake says "what were you saying Sully" and he picks up where he left off... That's genius.

Is Elena anyone elses favorite character in this game? I just finished chapter 12 and every scene with Elena and Nathan has been a highlight for me. Their scenes reay bring out the emotion!

I never understood why the twists were 'dumb' it was completely in line with the type of material these games were based on.

I missed them not doing anything supernatural at the end.

Uncharted 3 didn't have spirits. Nate was high on drugs. Technically there was no supernatural element in 3.

(enemy and location spoilers, mostly a rant about encounters near the end lol)

By the end I hated running into a big room because I knew I was about to be attacked by 100 dudes with half of them wearing armor. Honestly the enemies were perfect before the endgame. They died in one shot if I got a head shot and could tank a few bullets otherwise. If I miss played I would still die due to the damage but I could kill them quickly. Then they introduce the head armor people and now it takes 2 head shots (or a grenade) to kill them. At the end basically every enemy has armor and they all drop different guns with less than 1 clip of ammo. Grenades get spammed so you don't sit in cover and slowly take out enemies. On the ships at the end all the cover is destructible so a single miss step instantly kills you. They also have "waves" of enemies like a horde mode. There are usually 2 waves per encounter and checkpoint, meaning if you fuck up the second wave of a huge encounter then you have to redo the first wave. These waves and deaths led to me having to memorize enemy spawn locations so I didn't get flanked and killed. I loved the game but the end drove me nuts with the reliance on shooting dudes and tough combat encounters. It fucked with the pacing and reminded me of the first uncharted. I didn't even mention the dudes that have full body armor and their sole purpose is to rush you and put you in a headlock. Those guys sucked so much and killed me probably about 30 times because they pull you out of cover and you get shot to death.

That sums it up pretty well.

I honestly think that if you want a pure shooter, just go play something else.

It's wasting ND's talents to drown their story an exploration with waves of shitty enemies over and over.

To me, UC4 is almost perfect, I can't praise the pacing enough. It tried to serve the narration as best as it could, feeling like one hell of an adventure. And not "go forward until next waves of enemies".

I'm sorry you guys didn't enjoy as much as I did, cause it was everything I hoped it could be.

One of the best games I've played in recent years. Period, even.

I totally disagree with that Twitter. One could say that of many games that get a lot of shit... Including The Order, Resi 6 and others...

Game was fantastic as an Uncharted game. However, I cant I help but feel that I was left generally disengaged in the moment-to-moment gameplay, with the cutscenes being the most exciting parts of the game. TLOU for me was just much more engaging all throughout, with its environment storytelling and crafting/limited-ammo system that left me wanting to explore everything, which hasn't really been the emphasis in uncharted. Glad they decided to wrap up the series, hopefully their next game takes the direction of TLOU (which really felt like a next-gen experience at the time).
