So sad, I hate the games they play to try to get their ways. Stuff like making long speeches about how they learned to talk to their dog as a person just to waste time. When I first learned about it it sounded so childish, and look at how things are now. They are ruining a lot.

Sorry might be a stupid question but is there a good reason why the US always votes on a tuesday aka a work day? I am used to vote on sundays and think that is the better alternative instead of rushing before/after work to the ballots. I know tuesday has some historic reason behind it but I am still puzzled why it has not been changed.

It's plain childish, instead of working together for the American people they bicker and fight like yard fights in elementary school.

No it's not, some research says one candidate one would win if the recount parameters were set one way or another, but you can't say it's a fact that an unknown future would have played out in any certain way.

Al Gore, not George Bush, should be sitting in the White House today as the newly elected president of the United States, two new independent probes of the disputed Florida election contest have confirmed.
The first survey, conducted on behalf of the Washington Post, shows that Mr Gore had a nearly three-to-one majority among 56,000 Florida voters whose November 7 ballot papers were discounted because they contained more than one punched hole.

It could have been contested but Gore rolled over

Fuck. Now I know why I have that feeling that Biff travelled back in time and irrevocably altered the course of history.

In the other time line, Gore didn't pussy out over such a dumb goddamn thing; he fought tooth and nail until florida had to recast votes. Because the presidency goddamn matters. If we got Gore instead of Bush, we wouldn't have Bush tax cuts... duh. We wouldn't have had the Iraqi war. Maybe even not the Afghani one.

Universal health care would've already have been pushed through, and America would've become a world leader in sustainable energy movement, instead of dragging its feet.

Fuckin' ridiculous how much shit has happened just because Gore thought he was doing the 'right and honourable' thing at the time.

Honestly though, Bush didn't seem near that horrible at the time. Bush seemed much more moderate than he turned out to be.

He should have contested on the basis that the Supreme court should not decide who won but the actual full recount of the ballots aka we the people. The media was making it seem like a more urgent decision process than it needed to be, but if I was Gore and spent all that time and money, I would have stood up on the basis that if the courts get it wrong, that would be more harmful to our democracy than if the counting delayed the outcome.

Bush/Gore was when I first started getting into politics. I was 15 at the time and watching election night live (on CNN) was pretty amazing. And the process afterwards.

just looked up the ballot in my local area to make sure of no slip ups

I should do this as well. Outside of the key races, I have no idea what else is on the ballot.

I've got two hours to figure it out before the polls open.

Edit:

I'm definitely voting against this "Prohibits creation of a health insurance exchange unless created by legislature or initiative." but I'm at a loss when it comes to this "Requires that all municipal police forces or departments be controlled by the local governing body." and this "Grants Governor the power to appoint four members to the Appellate Judicial Commission".

The first one...what is this I don't even. The second one sounds like they're trying to make judge appointments political, which I'm against.

The Washington Post has a list of the predictors and the electoral totals they project for each candidate. Most are predicting Obama wins. Some pick Romney.

Dean Chambers, UnskewedPolls.com: Romney 311, Obama 227. “Many others in the media project very favorable maps and projections for Obama but those doing so fail to realize or accept how heavily-skewed polls distort any average or analysis that relies on them.”

Dick Morris, FoxNews: Romney 325, Obama 213. ”It will be the biggest surprise in recent American political history,” Morris said. “It will rekindle the whole question on why the media played this race as a nailbiter where in fact Romney’s going to win by quite a bit.”

James Pethokoukis: Romney 301, Obama 227. “Many pollsters are not catching the stratospheric GOP enthusiasm, particularly among voters of faith, in voting for Romney and Paul Ryan — not just against Obama and Joe Biden. In this way, the Bush-Kerry parallel from 2004 does not hold up”

Ben Domenech, The Transom: Romney 278, Obama 260. “In sum, I see the bottom slipping out from under Obama’s feet, and a campaign hoping to hold on just long enough to salvage a slim victory, one where he is almost certain to lose the popular vote. He is underperforming among whites and independents, and particularly among those likeliest to vote. I have never believed in running the prevent defense, and Obama has been running it for months.”

Michael Barone, The Examiner: Romney 315, Obama 223. “Both national and target state polls show that independents, voters who don’t identify themselves as Democrats or Republicans, break for Romney.”

Karl Rove: Romney 285, Obama 253. He’s got Romney winning Ohio, Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, and Florida.

I am rooting for Obama.
Hell, this will be a long day.
I have a feeling it will be 4-5 AM tomorrow if not later before the networks declare a winner.

So...I know the polls and the electoral college all seem to point to an Obama victory today but im still totally freaking out and am in total doom and gloom mode. Why? Shenanigans. With all the voter supression, voter id crap, purging voter rolls, etc. Ive had a growing feeling that Mitt is gonna win, polls be damned, because of some shady ass shit.

Is it stupid/childish of me to feel this way? Anyone else having similar thoughts?

Florida will probably be a problem in counting results with the heavy turnout and using paper ballots in the last few days at some places. Hopefully, Obama can be declared without Florida's results.

I heard on the Dutch news they only expect ~50% of the people to vote, is that true?
If so, why on earth is nobody trying to fix that?
Sorry if this has been discussed to death, i don't step into US politics threads that much.

63% was the highest since 1960 and that was in 1960.
How do you fix people not voting? You can't make them vote, you can only urge them to vote. Lot's of time and money spent trying to change it.

Blame the electoral vote system. If you're not in a swing state your vote doesn't really matter (as much as it would if not all electoral votes went to the candidate with the majority).

The more people vote, the more Democrats have a chance of winning. It explains why Republican state legislatures have cut early voting times and passed voter ID laws.

Right wing nuts are still living in a fantasy land. If Romney loses it will be because of a conspiracy. At least they won't blame the jews.

I feel you. Yea they are desperate to get "that one" out of the chair. They will do anything to win including cheat because in their little pea sized logic lobe, they think they are "saving the country". Giant eyeroll.

Make it easier to vote? The fact that you have to register to vote first sounds like a pain in the ass. For comparison: turnout on our last election was 73,8%, and that was the lowest in 10 years.

My HOR is in Georgia so even though there is usually no point in me voting(which is mostly democratic) I usually do it. This time im overseas and really haven't had the time to get my absent tee in .

I think there are 1000s of reasons why people don't vote generally.

Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, the more you try to disenfranchise voters the more likely they'll want to vote for the other guy. I consider myself somewhere between a libertarian and a conservative but this is bullshit.

Voter engagement is depressingly low in the US, especially among young people.

I think that it may come down to the courts again if Ohio or Florida is the deciding state. I'm pretty much hoping that it won't come down to either, but I'm ready to spend all day and most of the night worrying.

If you read American history, lots of election fraud took place. That's the main reason they decided to make people register.
I do think having voting on one day only for 12 hours is not enough. And have some sort of ATM voting machines spread out. Maybe if we had a national ID with a barcode and be able to drive-through vote, it would raise turnout. .
