- EW: 'Game of Thrones' IMAX ticket sales surprisingly strong
Though box office numbers are not yet available, we’re told some of the 200 theaters that have booked Thrones have sold out screenings, particularly theaters in larger cities. After an initial burst of fan interest, IMAX insiders expected sales to “hit the wall” and decline—instead, interest has been accelerating. Sources say an average weekend take for an IMAX theater is $4000-$5000 per screen, but Thrones is tracking like it’s going to easily exceed that—which is rather impressive for a screening that’s essentially a TV show’s repeats on Super Bowl weekend.

The numbers are nowhere near the enormous per-screen average of an blockbuster new release like Interstellar, of course, but they eclipse the pre-sales of nearly all of IMAX’s previous non-new-release special event screenings.

IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster tells EW he booked Thrones—the first TV show to ever receive a showcase in the format — to help fill a gap during what is traditionally a very slow time of year at the box office. Foster said he had an instinct the acclaimed fantasy hit would perform well. “We announced this and our website crashed,” Foster said. “As soon as that happened, my instinct didn’t matter; [the interest] became empirical. Then a week later, we announced we were moving the date to accommodate more theaters, and the website crashed again—twice. So that was a pretty good indication.”

I guess I have to defend Penny again huh.

I liked Penny, mainly due to the role she plays. She exists to pull Tyrion back from the brink and helps him regain his humanity. Often she becomes a mirror for Tyrion, exposing his hypocrisy on dwarfs/self hate. Tyrion's ADWD chapters are pretty bleak, and Penny ends up being one of the only positive things in his life - and the only positive, innocent/naive person he's around.

Having served her literary point (restoring Tyrion) she's going to die a horrible death in TWOW.

My only issue with her is that she tries pushing Tyrion to just accept that he's small and he's going to be laughed at so he should be their jingle jangle little elf. That he wasn't made for anything better than that. She begs him to just not try and act the lord when he's in fact an intelligent, fierce man. You'll never take that out of him.

Interesting that the "film" has been rated R. Of course it deserves that rating, but I didn't even consider that it would have to be rated for theatrical presentation. I also wonder how it's going to be cut together, if they are literally just going to play the two episodes complete with opening title sequence twice and end credits, or if they are going to actually cut it into one two hour thing, seamlessly going from Jon leaving the wall at the end of episode 9 to the beginning of the next episode.

I never thought of this, but it could actually be pretty cool.

RL is frequently used as an abbreviation for Ralph Lauren, if that helps the (not so great) joke make a bit more sense.

I know but no matter how you frame it, it isn't a joke and it doesn't make any sense. Ralph + Lauren = Polo??

Rhaegar + Lyanna = Country Club Squares?

Jon is going to invent polo? Pioneer a new technique that revolutionizes combat in the Seven Kingdoms: cavalry armed with hammers and silly hats?

The Others are actually like the aliens in Space Jam, except instead of being here to challenge Earth in basketball, they're all about polo.

It would be awesome if they did they Imax thing for season 5. If prices were reasonable, I would be super down to see Game of Thrones on the big screen every week. It's one of those shows that's more fun to watch with a big crowd.

It's just a personal quirk of mine but I despise seeing shows and movies that I love in a crowd. Reactions and sounds external to what I'm watching completely ruin the immersion for me. I wouldn't be able to stand seeing GoT in a public setting.

Listening to ADWD audio book. The race for who makes worse decisions? Cersi or Kelly C is tense!

The most disappointing thing is Dolorous Edd not saying "eh" as often :(

You know my biggest disappointment about how long GRRM takes to write these is that Roy Dotrice will almost certainly be dead before he's done.

Agreed.

His muddling of Baelish's, Cersei's and Dany's accents in the last two books, while understandable is unfortunate. How he pronounced Gilly in AFFC is also jarring. I went to the audio books after my second read through and enjoyed them mostly. However I think maybe a new narrator would be best, or a least a better director/editor.

What is Sansa's controversial thing?

There's a ~maybe, maybe not~ controversial Sansa chapter in Book 6, and [spoilers for S5 just in case]
Sophie said in an interview a month or so back that she filmed a "traumatic" scene that was "horrible" for everyone on set to watch, and people predict this may be the so called controversial chapter.

What is Sansa's controversial thing?

She might be thinking of Daznak's Pit too.

It's from a GRRM interview awhile ago
Martin later sent him the Manuscript in the Box, asking him to fact-check it for him — because a slip like a change in eye color will make fans salivate with imposter theories, when sometimes it's just a mistake. Garcia now performs this function for all the books, but it's completely unofficial: "It's not like I'm paid or anything." And yes, that means he's read parts of book six, The Winds of Winter — including a Sansa chapter that is sure to be controversial.
http://www.vulture.com/2013/04/george-rr-martin-fans-have-three-meals-and-drinks.html

A later clarification from Ran (Elio) suggested that he meant the chapter introduces a character that will be controversial amongst fans. Probably Harry The Heir, who I can't imagine being in the show since Sansa's identity isn't hidden in the show. We'll see.

Something like Daznak's or the walk of shame will be big events but they won't be the type to garner reaction videos. The only things that really got videos were Ned's death, Joffrey's death and the red wedding. I can't remember if the black water explosion got reaction videos or not.

I disagree about Daznak, it'll definitely garner major reactions. It's the first time Dany rides her dragon. And I'd imagine the S5 finale won't end on a blue balls cliff hanger: if Dany meets some Dothraki she's going to burn the shit out of them.

Or she'll just literally shit on them.

I hope they show Dany getting burned, that'll confuse the shit out of show watchers who think Targaryens, especially "Khaleesi" are immune to fire.

Oh man, that trailers got my hyped. I need a detailed break down STAT.

So unless it's a misdirect it looks like Varys
is straight up backing Dany. I've been hoping Aegon will happen, seeing as how he seems to be becoming a major player in the books, but I dunno man. I'm having some doubts but we'll see.
