*UNMARKED SPOILERS ALL BOOKS* Game of Thrones |OT| - Season 5 Offseason Thread

It was crazy to think that to begin with.
Sansa is one of the safest characters there are, her slow buildup wasn't going to just suddenly end.

I think entertaining the thought that one of the core major characters is going to die this season that still lives in the books is quite the stretch. Characters like Grey Worm or Bronn getting the axe is more realistic.

I think most people freaked out after the contents of that outline thing were released.
Now everyone who wasn't one of GRRM's original 5 main characters is under suspicion for not being important to the endgame of the story lol

I probably wouldn't go higher than 20% at this point. It's just been too long. I don't think the twist would even work anymore. They haven't foreshadowed it nearly enough for it to seem reasonable to viewers. I can see delaying her from season 4 to 5, but only if they spend season 4 dropping hints that something out of the ordinary was up with the Brotherhood. Since they didn't do that at all, I think she's just gone.

Who knows at this point. I mean, some foreshadowing has been done in the form of Berick's resurrections, so it wouldn't be completely out of the blue. I assume at least some viewers must be wondering what happened to 'that immortal zombie guy who keeps coming back to life?'

On the other hand, the rather strained visit that Melisandre paid to the brotherhood was probably just to relay the whole resurrection thing back to the wall in preparation for Jon's inevitable rebirth.

When this is all done, people are going to be able to make a fortune hawking covers on eBay to cover people who missed one, lol. I know if I end up with a duplicate by the end I wouldn't be able to talk myself out of spending an inordinate amount of money to fix it. :(

Yup, and this is all my fault for not paying attention in the first place and getting a preorder in for it back when they were announced. I just kinda forgot, really bummed the in store options were pure repeates though. I picked up Majora's Mask on vacation and totally would have grabbed the GoT Blu Ray too but left disappointed :(

If they don't do a reprint I'll just stop buying the box sets and wait for the series to be over to get the complete thing.

Yeah, I'm putting like zero stock in that outline, just because so much has changed. I am sure there are characters outside of the original five who have evolved to more prominent roles, and he's at least considered at this point that maybe some of the original five are more suited to a tragic end now, given how far they've evolved from their original concept.

Yeah, I've gotten ok with the idea of seeing the ending in the show first, but I'm also only someone who read the books after seeing the first season. I can totally understand not wanting it that way though, especially people who have been reading the books for years before the show was even conceived, and it's going to be a rough couple of years/decades for people who try to abstain from the show until the books wrap up. Those last two season are going to seep into pop culture, and spending years dodging spoilers that could really crop up anywhere is going to really suck. I'm honesty not sure how many are going to actually be able to get those books completely unspoiled, but godspeed to those who try.

Yeah, I didn't start the books until after season three started so I'm not yet in the boat of being one who has waited at least five plus years for TWoW since ADWD. The further the show gets away from the books the better, even if some major events get spoiled I found reading the books more enjoyable after AGoT because so much was either altered or cut in the show in season two and beyond. Actually having caught up with the books before season four started only left me with some disappointments in what the show didn't do aside from the stupid shit. Aside from not having much in the way of attachment to most stuff in AFfC and ADWD I'm looking forward to seeing how season five's alterations play out as long as they're not poorly written anyway.

I won't be able to escape spoilers at work. And while the books will have the true ending, I expect the show to spoil multiple big things. I'm not going to blame show viewers, I'll blame Martin. If he had simply bunkered down in 2012 we wouldn't be in this position.

Absolutely GRRM's fault, for someone who worked in TV and already knew they planned seven seasons he thought that his writing in books four and five were so dense and great and wonderful that there was no way they wouldn't want to milk it for three seasons. I said a while ago that I've developed the impression that George has a higher opinion of his own writing than even some of the biggest fanboys/girls and after seeing the whole thing with his editor and his mostly ignoring her it's kind of cemented my opinion in that.

Speaking of the outline, did you guys see Reddit trying to decipher the blacked out text?

That's actually a pretty disappointing translation! The summary basically reads like a recap of where we are at the end of ASoS. The Lannisters secure on the throne (with Jaime in this version instead of Cersei), Jon as their enemy and Lord Commander (Some of Jon's role seems to have passed on to Stannis here, with regard to being the Lannister's primary enemy) and Dany gathering strength for her invasion (the early draft doesn't include the Slavers' Bay arc, so it has her with the Dothraki, but that's pretty much where the end of Dance ends up putting her. She was just slowed down a bit) The only real mystery is what it's saying about Bran.

How did no one discover that tweet for 5 months?

Looks like no one had any particular reason to be following that makeup artist? Though I guess it's suprising no one ever caught it on a Twitter search for GoT or something. I'll await confirmation that the makeup artistic legit and really worked on the show, but I dont see any reason she would've faked it in such a quiet way that no one noticed for months.

Yeah I feel like someone would have caught that in a search on GoT at some point.

Either way, great news if it turns out to be legit.

Greatjon's not captive in show-canon, though. Writers confirmed that in their version he was not at the Red Wedding to be captured. He would most likely be taking over Manderly's role from the book.

Oh don't you go starting any rumors!
Fuck yes if true! Clive was pretty damn charismatic during the few scenes he had in Season 1 and if he's gonna be the face of the Northern Rebellion I totally see the fans getting behind him.

I guess it would be to much to ask for to give him Manderly's monologue but as along as he gives some variation of "The North Remembers" I'll be satisfied.

This bugs me because he was Robb's biggest supporter and then just straight up disappeared in s3. Which was whatever, but now if this is true he just randomly wasn't with Robb at the RW and during the war.

I'm gonna assume it's real since they did send Rickon there.

The north Remembers saw the tag line for last season right? Sure didn't mean much lol. I feel like the north is forgotten in the show, but Greatjon serving a pie would make me forgive it all.

Also worth noting that in the show, last we knew Rickon was headed to The Last Hearth.
Ah yes that's right, we might actually be getting a Rickon/Osha scene which would be nice since Bran won't be in this one.

The tag line for Season 4 was "All men must die". And the North is definitely not forgotten the entire Bolton plot line in Season 4 was a testament to that.

The season 2 Blu-Ray features say that Robb gave him an independent command in the gap between season 1 and 2 and he was tasked with cleaning up remaining Lannister forces in the Riverlands while Robb attacked the West, but there's been no update after that about where he went from there or how he (apparently) made it back north, so there will have to be some quick boring dialogue explaining it all. I know the actor had his ear bitten off in a bar fight, so I kind of hope they incorporate that into his war story, lol.

That's a pretty easy write-in. He actually lead a separate force in the Westerlands in the books as well.

I'd like to believe the Umber sigil hints at the future of the Greatjon, at least in the books. The idea of him being freed from his chains and absolutely wrecking Freys brings a smile to my face.

Really? Neat. Missed that while watching the Blu Ray I guess.

They need to bring back the Blackfish too.
He's still a factor in the show. Edmure is also living but MIA since the Red Wedding. Curious to see if or how the Riverlands situation is going with Jamie going to Dorne instead and if LSH or Beric and friends won't be showing up. Brienne and Pod might end up in the mix, maybe.

From everything I've seen, it looks like Season 5 is just fast tracking all the storylines found in AFFC/ADWD. The only arc we have to be leery about is Sansa's. I do expect a few surprises like Ice Mordor last season, but I don't think it will be an out and out spoilerfest on TWOW.

GRRM better have it done by early next year though.

What's the difference when TWOW comes out, the show will move on, besides, I bet it won't end with book 7 either. We're at book 5 and there's no endgame in sight, not even remotely.

It's buried really deep in the interactive map thing explaining the war of the five kings. I think it's something they just whipped up to cover their asses when scheduling conflicts kept Umber from returning in season 2.

They need to bring back the Blackfish too.

My bet is on Blackfish hooking up with the Brotherhood at some point in both the books and the show. If that's what he's going to do after escaping from Riverrun in the books, it'd be easy enough to just have it happen a bit early and have him be there when they capture Brienne.

I've accepted the show finishing ahead of the books. I'm banking on them basically using the Winds material to form the ending GRRM told them instead of dipping too much into Dream. That said, George did reiterate recently that the plan is still 7 books. Either that means he's made good progress and knows enough about where he's going, or he hasn't done shit and is still in the same mindset WRT the amount of books as he was 4 years ago.

Yea, but nothing has shown that Clive Russell is in S5. It would be really weird for them to just completely drop it too.

And where's my new trailer HBO. I need moar.

Same here. I picked up the Tyrell one this time, but they'd better play it smart and keep new options open for every season. I don't want a repeat cover.

I don't think we will see Cat as Lady Stoneheart. But there is still a chance for Talisa I'd say. It could make for an interesting character arc in her going from being a compassionate healer, who even helped enemy soldiers, into a bloodthirsty maniac out for revenge.

Stage four: bargaining

This makes sense to me. No show-watcher knows who Manderly is, but how could anyone ever forget the Greatjon?

Guys, Mantle isn't back.

If you even scrolled down a few tweets to look at the replies, she confirms that she didn't do his make up for GoT. It's very badly worded, but what she really meant was "Clive Mantle of GoT fame".

nah that's why they had the dialogue with arya and dondarrion in the show

don't really understand why book readers say LSH won't be in the show.
I spoiled myself on Wikipedia and never read the books but, show wise:
- they made a huge deal with Dondarrion coming back to life.
- the Brotherhood was tracking Arya the last time we saw any hint of them, chances are they were lead to the Twins and found Caitlin's body.
- the show hasn't been shy on showing the smashed, butchered, maimed dead corpses of main characters. We haven't seen much about Caitlin. Granted even Robb's wife wasn't shown being thrown in the river, but the fact the show runners have been cagey about the fate of the Blackfish and Edmure is weird.
- she is a very powerful character, connected directly with many key characters. Lots of plot knots could be unravelled by a character like her, and lots of twist could be pulled because of her.
- with Arya becoming blind and LSH not "sounding" the way she did before dying, plus the hatred of Arya for the Brotherhood and the hatred of Caitlin for Jon Snow (basically the only living son she has left, since in the show she thinks all her children are either dead or lost to her), there are quite a few strings that can be pulled to make the story as heart-wrenching as ever.

no one says it's impossible.
but at that point, it's unlikely, she is simply overdue
plus, at least one important character who is about to meet her in the books gets a completely new and different storyline in season 5
(jaime)

so chances are they changed everything to work out witthout her.
however, I'd place myself in the camp that still believes she might appear.

Ok, so after doing some digging... it turns out that Clive Mantle COULD be in Season 5.

Sorry for jumping in and denying it earlier biosnake.

The make up artist seems to be attempting to cover her tracks. If the tweet mysteriously disappears, then the odds of him being in are probably increased.

didnt we expect him to reappear again? why would they change rickons destination if not to meet an established northerner?
