Man, it's going to be quite the clusterfuck of epic proportions when two different timelines (show and books) form. Everyone's going to be fighting with each other and throwing fireballs arguing the book ending is canon and vice versa. Confusing times ahead!

The books are the definitive version of the story.

I'm actually looking forward to it. Should be fun.

Some people will no doubt prefer the ending of the show (with buzzwords like "streamlined" or "cut the fat" or "satisfying") but there really is no question of the show being "canon" over the books. It simply isn't true.

Both endings will be canon and they're going to be pretty similar, GRRM knows how the story is ending and he has told the writers of the show.
He doesn't know all the details of how he's getting there but that doesn't really matter, even if the books were finished right now the show would simplify GRRM's long winded writing, 100 sub plots and 500 characters anyway because they don't do 40 episode seasons. So him giving the showrunners a few markers and points they have to hit before the ending is more than enough.

Pretty much.

I'll take the long winded version over whatever the show dishes out, no matter how similar or different they ultimately end up being.

Huh. The Wars to Come is interesting, but there was no way to predict that one. I imagine naming the premiers is always hard, since they tend to just focus on catching up with all the characters, and don't usually include many iconic events.

House of Black and White and High Sparrow are both a bit more prosaic than I expected, but at least they give us good indication of what those eps will be covering.

If "The Wars to Come" is an episode title, that's either about something Melisandre talks about (regarding both the war over Westeros and Azor Ahai's war against the Others) or it's about Littlefinger discussing the upcoming War of Three Queens.

Should I quit watching the show then?

if you only watched it to enjoy the story for a second time and not because of all the great stuff it brings to the table like the great actors, the landscapes, costumes etc. you probably should not have watched it in the first place.

personally, I welcome it very much that we'll get two versions.

They are really hyping this season up. My Unsullied friend was saying how that it's going to worse than the red wedding and even book readers are going to be surprised and in the dark for most of the season. I was like "dude, there is literally only one character whose story is ahead of the books, and that's Sansa, otherwise they pretty much have to follow what's happening to some extent." He also belives one of Danaerys dragons are going to be killed due to the internet, which I pretty much lied and said "damn it, you weren't supposed to know that."

What I am trying to say is...The Wars to Come is an intresting episode title.

Is this just based on the opinion of your Unsullied friend? Their promotion this year has honestly been more delayed and sub-par compared to years previous. At least from personal experience, the level of hype doesn't even seem close to the same.

Yeah. I just realized it was from that friend only lol. It does seem odd that they haven't started promoting it more. I mean it probably won't be as good as last season because that's the finale of part one of the books, but still they could do better.

memles with an appearance on WiCnet this week:

- Critics on the Throne episode 3: Myles McNutt
Welcome to the third episode of “Critics on the Throne”! This time I interview Game of Thrones expert Myles McNutt of the Cultural Learnings blog, and one of my comrades at The A.V. Club.

In this episode we’re mostly focused on the recent marketing for Season 5–both the recent poster reveal and the trailer. What do these things mean for the show, and what messages are they sending to readers and Unsullied about Season 5?

I think I posted it back when it came out, but I found the first Critics on the Throne episode with Todd VanDerWerff to be an interesting listen.

Looking forward to this one.

Yeah I think they've realized the show has reached that level of ~it's going to be watched by millions no matter what~ and so just aren't putting much effort into promotion anymore.

Yeah, I'm hoping they've just shifted strategies to really push things in the final couple of weeks, because it's a bit slow right now. I need a few more trailers, dammit.

Man, these are like the least surprising episode titles ever. They may as well be "Premier", "The One Where Stuff Happens to Arya", "The One Where Stuff Happens In Kings Landing", etc.

Why should episode titles be surprising, especially to people who have read the work they are adapting?

Eh I do feel like these latest crop of episode titles are a bit less creative than usual but to a non-book reader these episode titles wouldn't mean jack shit.

Well, they shouldn't. That doesn't mean I don't want them to be! The episodes should totally be titled after the major plots, which are going to be fairly predictable, but as someone who knows all that, I'm biased and want titles about whatever crazy change they're making that we don't know about already.

The book ending will be the one that's canon. There's just no debating that, it's the source material directly from the creator itself.

People will be perfectly just in taking the TV ending as "official" at least for the TV show but the true ending and story will be the books

It's two separate continuities, both are "canon."

Noice. So I'm guessing Arya doesn't get into the HoBaW until episode 2?
Well the show lately has been focusing on only certain episodes focusing on certain characters. She didn't get an introudction in season 3 till the second episode as well.

Huh you're right. And she didn't show up in S2E1 until the last few seconds. That may be what's happening here. Maybe she shows up to the House at the very end of E1.
