*UNMARKED SPOILERS ALL BOOKS* Game of Thrones |OT| - Season 5 Offseason Thread

Ian McElhinney was at a recent convention in Sweden and supposedly he did a Q&A there. Here is some of what he had to say(allegedly):

Hi, everybody! I just left a fan convention in Sweden where Ian McElhinney attended to answer fan questions and figured I'd share some small tidbits the fanbase might want regarding the fifth season.

- Ser Barristan will have a "great" fight scene in Season 5. McElhinney was aware of the tell-don't-show-part of his character up till this point and is happy the character finally gets to show off some of his abilities.
- There will be a significant death in "virtually every episode".
- More confirmation that some storylines will surpass the books this season. His wording would also suggest all storylines will have at least caught up by the end of the season.
- He believes Barristan's story has remained mostly faithful to the books up till this point. It's unclear whether he meant in regard to what has been aired or what has been shown, so The Battle of Mereen is still up in the air.

BIGGER SPOILERS BELOW. Leave, ye rare Unsullied.

- Just something I found a bit funny. I asked him what the transtition from working with one part of the cast to a whole different one had been like, and while he was answering (this is one wordy man), he got to mention how some fans would ask him back in the beginning what it was like to work with Peter Dinklage, after which he preceeded all on his own to deny, three times, that he had yet not worked with Peter, but hoped to have the honor sometime.

Sounds like bullshit.
Lets see:

Goodbye Loras, Bronn, Kevan, Pycell, Robin, Mance, Tormund, Aemon, Myrcella, Greyworm, Brienne, Jon....Okay... maybe it is possible.

Man, it's going to be quite the clusterfuck of epic proportions when two different timelines (show and books) form. Everyone's going to be fighting with each other and throwing fireballs arguing the book ending is canon and vice versa. Confusing times ahead!

It's just like my japanese anime!

The book ending will be the one that's canon. There's just no debating that, it's the source material directly from the creator itself.

People will be perfectly just in taking the TV ending as "official" at least for the TV show but the true ending and story will be the books

Why do things like what's canon or not even matter?

They are two canons; book canon and show canon. They are separate things, each has their own canon, and neither is less legitimate.

The TV show is already its own separate continuity due to the changes that have been made so far. There might be disagreement about which ending is better (a la Fullmetal Alchemist) but in terms of canon I think it should be fairly clear cut.

Why do things like what's canon or not even matter?

They don't, but people in lots of different fandoms love to argue about canonicity.

The books is to Star Wars films what the show is to Star Wars books. Though GoT isn't the EU, it's more the CU... Constrained Universe. Each their own canon but the original source is the prime canon.

How is the show not less legitimate than the books? The books are the official story, the show is the show.

we will have that discussion for eternity, especially after the books are out and differ greatly from the show. luckily I don't care at all about which is more or less legitimate.

The books are the original and the show is an adaptation, but they're both "official" within their own separate spheres. I've liked the books better so far, but the show is it's own thing and I see no need to denigrate it even if I don't like all the choices they made in adapting it. I don't like all the choices GRRM made in writing the books either and I think there is potentially room for improvement.

The show has its own canon. It's different. Book canon is as irrelevant towards show canon as show canon is towards the books, except where they overlap.

If the show is not legit, then the Wizard of Oz movie isn't either.

The WoO took massive changes to the book, from adding the farm hands, Ms. Gulch, and Professor Marvel, to the Toto in trouble/running away subplot, to taking out huge parts of the book like Chinatown and the river and the field mice rescuing them from the flowers. The Witch of the West wasn't green, she was a one-eyed, crumpled up hag. And yet it's one of the most beloved films of all time.

It's just an adaptation. There have been several other adaptations and each stood on their own. Same goes for Sherlock Holmes and the same will go for Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter when they eventually re-boot those series.

We had a website like that for Dragons.

I guess they took it down, but it was isdancewithdragonsoutyet.com and until release it was just a white page with big black "NO" on it.

Episode 2:
Stannis' offer of Winterfell to Jon is happening! Also, no idea what the temptation of Dany is? Maybe Daario wanting to execute one of the Sons and Barristan convincing her to spare him?

Episode 3:
Already creeped out by Margaery enjoying Tommen.

On another note, HBO is released the next installment of the "Catch the Throne" free mixtape series. Apparently, this second version will feature Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Yandel, and include a couple of metal mixes from Anthrax and Killswitch Engage. They just released a preview with Talib Kweli's "Lord of Light:"

Also, here's a link to the first mixtape, I think the best song is "Arya's Prayer:"

You can definitely tell which artists are true fans of the show or books.

I think I posted it back when it came out, but I found the first Critics on the Throne episode with Todd VanDerWerff to be an interesting listen.

Looking forward to this one.

Let me know—it's not a particularly substantive discussion, but if you want analysis of key art, THIS IS THE PODCAST FOR YOU.

Tyrion already in Volantis is interesting. It strongly suggests Faegon's been totally cut, for one thing. Also makes me wonder how long the slave arc is gonna last before he ends up in Dany's court.

Tommen is a teen in the show now, though.

It also confirms that
Varys will be with him, probably up until he's kidnapped. Love it, love me some Varys.

More leaks:

Episode 505: Fat Pink Mast
Episode 506: Myrish Swamp
Episode 507: A Maiden of Three and Ten
Episode 508: Cockles
Episode 509: Jon Snow Dies
Episode 510: The Return of Jon Snow

I'm going to be super disappointed if the second half of the season doesn't have 'Wherever Whores Go' as the subtitle for each of the episodes.

Currently rereading the series and I got to ADWD yesterday, the most traumatic writing of the series and it's before the prologue:

Next up, The Winds of Winter. Wherein, I hope, everybody will be shivering together once again... -George R.R. Martin, April 2011.

I particularly enjoyed the author's note at the end of AFFC dated June 2005 where GRRM states DWD would be released the year after. It came out six years after.

I remember reading that on my first read through of the series, which ended up being about a year or two before DWD came out, thinking to myself, "Heh, glad I won't have to suffer through a wait like that!"

Oh how foolish I was.

This was pretty jarring to me after reading the whole series for the first time last year. Like, first AFFC ends with a goddamn apology which was hilarious. But, then he says "don't worry I was trying to make one big book and thus decided to just cut it in half to get it out quicker, the remaining half will be out next year." Then I crack open ADWD and see that it's dated 2011...

Dude, took six years to write what he proclaimed was just the other parts of AFFC that he had to cut out for times sake. AFFC and ADWD are one book as we all know so how could it possibly have it taking so long for ADWD? This is why I'm skeptical about getting TWOW anytime soon, especially since he said he cut a lot of parts out of ADWD to put in TWOW. I've heard that before.

Amazing. I knew Kweli was a huge nerd.

This is all I can think about after listening to Lord of Light:

You guys are whining when you actually read AFFC and ADWD back to back?

I read A Storm of Swords in 2000. I waited five years for Feast. And then six more years for Dance.

I've basically been waiting 15 years now for Tyrion to meet Dany, and it still hasn't happened. :(

Yeah, every time I see strictly show watchers bemoan about the nine month gap between season I feel the need to remind them about how long book readers have had to wait. If I really want to get a rude reply back I suggest they actually read the books.

I'm going to be super disappointed if the second half of the season doesn't have 'Wherever Whores Go' as the subtitle for each of the episodes.
Heh, too bad they didn't use the line in the show... <.< >.>

I feel bad for people that are going to stop watching because they'll probably get spoiled anyway.
Pretty much, the show is huge. They may be able to escape smaller spoilers but if something big happens it will be everywhere. Let's say Tyrion hets eaten by a dragon, the internet will explode immediately.
