It's two separate continuities, both are "canon."
The TV show will be about as canon as fan fiction, personally.
Obviously more weighty, but still fan fiction

Not fan fiction but irrelevant. The books are the main story, period. The show might as well be an alternate reality.
Hi, everybody! I just left a fan convention in Sweden where Ian McElhinney attended to answer fan questions and figured I'd share some small tidbits the fanbase might want regarding the fifth season.
- Ser Barristan will have a "great" fight scene in Season 5. McElhinney was aware of the tell-don't-show-part of his character up till this point and is happy the character finally gets to show off some of his abilities.
- There will be a significant death in "virtually every episode".
- More confirmation that some storylines will surpass the books this season. His wording would also suggest all storylines will have at least caught up by the end of the season.
- He believes Barristan's story has remained mostly faithful to the books up till this point. It's unclear whether he meant in regard to what has been aired or what has been shown, so The Battle of Mereen is still up in the air.
BIGGER SPOILERS BELOW. Leave, ye rare Unsullied.
- Just something I found a bit funny. I asked him what the transtition from working with one part of the cast to a whole different one had been like, and while he was answering (this is one wordy man), he got to mention how some fans would ask him back in the beginning what it was like to work with Peter Dinklage, after which he preceeded all on his own to deny, three times, that he had yet not worked with Peter, but hoped to have the honor sometime.
Sounds like bullshit. There will be a significant death in "virtually every episode".
Man, it's going to be quite the clusterfuck of epic proportions when two different timelines (show and books) form. Everyone's going to be fighting with each other and throwing fireballs arguing the book ending is canon and vice versa. Confusing times ahead!
The book ending will be the one that's canon. There's just no debating that, it's the source material directly from the creator itself.
People will be perfectly just in taking the TV ending as "official" at least for the TV show but the true ending and story will be the books

Why do things like what's canon or not even matter?
How is the show not less legitimate than the books? The books are the official story, the show is the show. They are two canons; book canon and show canon. They are separate things, each has their own canon, and neither is less legitimate.

The show has its own canon. It's different. Book canon is as irrelevant towards show canon as show canon is towards the books, except where they overlap. How is the show not less legitimate than the books? The books are the official story, the show is the show.

I think I posted it back when it came out, but I found the first Critics on the Throne episode with Todd VanDerWerff to be an interesting listen.
Looking forward to this one.
On another note, HBO is released the next installment of the "Catch the Throne" free mixtape series. Apparently, this second version will feature Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Yandel, and include a couple of metal mixes from Anthrax and Killswitch Engage. They just released a preview with Talib Kweli's "Lord of Light:"

Also, here's a link to the first mixtape, I think the best song is "Arya's Prayer:"

You can definitely tell which artists are true fans of the show or books.

Episode 2:Stannis' offer of Winterfell to Jon is happening! Also, no idea what the temptation of Dany is? Maybe Daario wanting to execute one of the Sons and Barristan convincing her to spare him?
Episode 3:Already creeped out by Margaery enjoying Tommen.
Tyrion already in Volantis is interesting. It strongly suggests Faegon's been totally cut, for one thing. Also makes me wonder how long the slave arc is gonna last before he ends up in Dany's court.
More leaks:
Episode 505: Fat Pink Mast
Episode 506: Myrish Swamp

Next up, The Winds of Winter. Wherein, I hope, everybody will be shivering together once again... -George R.R. Martin, April 2011.
Currently rereading the series and I got to ADWD yesterday, the most traumatic writing of the series and it's before the prologue:

I particularly enjoyed the author's note at the end of AFFC dated June 2005 where GRRM states DWD would be released the year after. It came out six years after.

Amazing. I knew Kweli was a huge nerd.
Heh, too bad they didn't use the line in the show... <.< >.>I'm going to be super disappointed if the second half of the season doesn't have 'Wherever Whores Go' as the subtitle for each of the episodes.
You guys are whining when you actually read AFFC and ADWD back to back?
I read A Storm of Swords in 2000. I waited five years for Feast. And then six more years for Dance.
I've basically been waiting 15 years now for Tyrion to meet Dany, and it still hasn't happened.![]()
Nah, not watching S5.You'll see it in the show in a few months

Isn't that spoilerish as fuck?
This is not the books you won't have to wait that long.Nah, not watching S55.
Nah, not watching S55.
Oops lolThis is not the books you won't have to wait that long.
I'm not on social media, so my chances are not too bad I think. Are you going offline as well? Cause you're going to get spoiled no matter what.
I wish you the best of luck Morrigan! These threads were made brighter by your presence.Oops lol

Pretty much, the show is huge. They may be able to escape smaller spoilers but if something big happens it will be everywhere. Let's say Tyrion hets eaten by a dragon, the internet will explode immediately.I feel bad for people that are going to stop watching because they'll probably get spoiled anyway.
"The TV thread sends its regards"I feel bad for people that are going to stop watching because they'll probably get spoiled anyway.
Nah, not watching S5.
Aw, that's a pity
I find the show very fun if you just see it as a "what if" of sorts.
What If George finished the books.
Going media blackout on GoT...I can see future threads being very problematic for you, good luck!Nah, not watching S5.
