From USA Today:
The fantasy series marks the network's first to run six years while consistently building its audience, HBO says, citing Nielsen and streaming data provided exclusively to USA TODAY. Through June 17, the series has averaged 23.3 million viewers across all platforms, up 15% from last year.

In all seriousness:

What the fuck is HBO gonna do once this goes off the air?

I foresee them going through dozens of shows based on Sci-Fi/Fantasy books that only last for a season or two as they scramble to find "The next Game of Thrones."

Find new showrunners, start over, stick closer to the books, and maybe by the time Season 6 Dos comes around, TWOW will be out.

Steel swords have quite a lot of flex. Looks a little silly but it might actually still be steel in that sheath.

Edit: Nah probably not but you don't want to risk falling down from a horse with four feet of steel strapped to you.

As someone who knows nothing about the source material, the recent Westworld trailer was very promising. But if it's anything less than great, HBO could be in a troubling place.

I was so sad about HBO Now on Sunday. I couldn't watch for almost an hour because the service died at 9pm on the dot.

HBO GO was a stuttery mess through the 9-10 EST hour last week. Ended up like 10:15-10:20 before I actually finished the episode.

I don't think it matters even if it amazing. The question is can it last for even five years?

Insane that they cancel vinyl when it and got are all they really had going imo.

Showtime is way better right now with penny dreadful, Ray Donovan, millions, shameless, etc.

with this absurd sucess, I'd bet a lot that HBO will not drop the Game of thrones franchise after season 8

we will see roberts rebellion or the conquest of the targaryens or something entirely new within 2 years and with new showrunners, D&D are obviously even more tired of ASOIAF than GRRM

I wonder if they'll ever bother to do a prequel series on Robert's Rebellion. Can reuse a lot of the same locations and there would be far less CG to worry about since no dragons, direwolves, giants, etc. You can stretch that story out to 2 or 3 seasons if you wanted if you include Tourney of Harenhall or even just start the story from Rhaegar's birth at Summerhall and timeskip when needed.

I'd love a Dance of the Dragons adaptation as well, though that one would be pretty expensive due to all the cool ass dragon shenanigans going down. But it's the perfect story for the whole "everyone is gray, anti-hero/villain, and GANGSTA BADASS" thing they love so much.

Or they could adapt The First Law by Joe Abercrombie instead :)

I'd love a TV adaptation, his writing prose seems like it would be so easy to adapt to screen as well. Or The Witcher...

I just finished reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as well and it really contrasts against the poor dialogue on the show.. It would be slower paced, not as much happening, but there's some interesting enough characters and intrigue in there. There's enough backstory to that world that you can expand it out through other TV/film properties and still tell interesting stories.

The only GoT prequel I'd like to see would be one dealing with the Long Night or Age of Heroes. Everything else about the Conquest or Robert's Rebellion has already been divulged enough that there would be no surprises. On the other hand, the only things we know about the Age of Heroes are vague and contradictory legends which GRRM has already confirmed are either partially or completely fabricated/merged from several different events/people, so it would be cool to see what really happens, provided ADoS doesn't tell us.

Dunk and Egg isnt eventful enough for a series. And there isnt enough written material for Roberts Rebellion. Unless they want to do something thats 99% original they can only do the Dance of the Dragons. Which is fine by me. Its the Romanovs on steroids.

Anyway, these 'me too' things never work out. I seriously doubt any fanatasy series will be as successful for a very long time even if they try.

even though I rank adwd quite low it's more for what's missing and how it's put together rather the actual content. I don't really dislike any part of the books that much, other than some hilarious grrm sex scenes and darkstar

Those viewing numbers don't count the fact that I have like 8 people over every Sunday that don't have HBO right? Or is there something built in to predict that?

The recent books have been bad due to Martin getting lost in his own world and forgetting to tell an actual narrative.

He totally should have done the time skip.

Frey will have a party with the Lannisters, then he introduces one of his girls as a Marriage Offering. The Girl turns out to be Arya (who previously killed Frey daugther and took her face) - then she kills Walder Frey

let this happen HBO - i want revenge

I disagree because I don't mind getting lost in that world too, this is assuming he actually finished the story though

HBO should do Gene Wolfe's Solar Cycle. All the books, one season each. Would be amazing. New Sun, Urth, Long Sun, Short Sun.
I wish so much for this to happen. They would need to some talented writers to translate them to TV though. Short Sun would be especially difficult to adapt.

Doesn't even have to be a marriage offering, but yea, let this happen.

If Arya teleports to Westeros in this next episode I'll be pretty annoyed.
There's no definition of how long Arya has been in Braavos compared to the other character's arcs. Her appearing in Westeros on Sunday wouldn't be teleporting lol. I'd rather her just be in Westeros than see meaningless screen time of her sailing on a ship.

Definitely, yes. Let's leave this whole assassin arc behind her as quickly as possible and let her new story arc begin as soon as possible.
