Until Dawn was the top trending game on YouTube last month

Hell yessssss loved it, GOTY for me, well deserved, etc.

Played through twice, once on my own and once with three others and splitting the characters two a piece. Wondering if I should play a third time :)

....

considering it is a game it literally isn't a movie

literally

A narrative-driven game then, which you can fully experience watching it on Youtube. It's gameplay consists of QTEs.

It's not, because movies have one path. There are thousands of way this game can play out.

'Thousands'? You do realise every possible death has been posted on Youtube already?

they saw a playthrough where the youtuber choose A instead of their preferred B option, so they go out and buy the game themselves so they can make their own choices.

From what I've seen on a playthrough, those choices don't really matter anyway as they end up in the same place.

Just a bought a PS4. Really looking forward to playing this later in the year. Is it casual gamer friendly (simple controls)? My girlfriend might want to play this too.

Loved it, debating on when to play it again. My GOTY so far as well.

It's not my GOTY, but besides MGSV, its the only game I beat in 2 play sessions in 2015. Really enjoyed it. Rami Malek being in it at the same time of the Mr. Robot finale was a great coincidence too.

I haven't played the game myself, but the choices affect who lives or dies in the end isn't it. the differences become obvious in the later half of the game. a lot of the first half is taking it's time and make you care about the characters until later when they start the killing.

I'm sure there's a trade-off and some people won't buy it. But many more see a game they can play with there SO or friends. It's great exposure for a game that wasn't heavily advertised.

I believe it, it's an eminently watchable game. But no, watching it is not the same as actually playing it yourself. That's ridiculous.

I just wanted to watch this movie.

Well, it looks like a game you can watch instead of play and still get the majority of the enjoyment.

Nobody is going to buy it if they watched the playthrough. It's literally a movie.

The game literally doesn't work unless you play it so these posts don't make sense. Same goes for games like Heavy Rain.

Laughably bad, old, unfunny joke posts.

Game fell apart after the
momsters
were introduced imo.

But it wasn't bad enough where I wouldn't give a sequel a chance of it didn't have that kind of stuff, just didn't belong

I did. Your post is still nonsense.

Excellent rebuttal, great job. You sure showed me.

There seems to be only one choice that affects the actual ending of the game, everything is just depends on your treatement and decisions within your group, like Ashley and Chris, Mike and Jessica etc etc, and liek I said that can all be gleamed from youtube videos.

What? Heavy Rain is the best example of my point, these posts without any sort of counter-argument are getting tiresome. Also yeah, I would assume it wouldn't work if someone played it, not sure what point you are trying to bring up here. Thank goodness for people who post videos for monetary gain I guess.

It is probably selling very well too. Many friends of mine are talking about it on Facebook. I have never seen a game been mentioned so many times on it outside of the usual suspects (Minecraft and CIA).

OK this thread made me order a copy. Maybe Sony could actually advertise the game or something, because I had no idea about it until a couple weeks ago.

Yeah I was surprised to hear that some of my non-gaming friends were into it. Everyone lauded its story. Kinda funny for me as a gamer this wasn't on my radar at all but all my non-gamer friends raved about it. Of course they just watched it on YouTube as they don't own consoles or anything.

I don't know about that, everyone I have heard talking about it (like you mentioned, in a non-gaming environment) just watched it on YouTube.

I like how you're ignoring the rebuttals, actually. Do you control the outcome of the movies you watch? What kinds of movies are these? Do you control the characters in these movies? Do you literally hold their lives in your hands? I really can't even tell if you're being serious tbh, since you can't just watch Until Dawn. Sure you could go on YouTube and watch a playthrough, but that logic, every playthrough of a game is a movie, making the game a movie.

Why do you keep bringing up that movie point, I clarified like 5 posts ago. My point is there is literally nothing gained from purchasing the game after watching the let's play Every death scene can be watched, every decision like go left or straight ahead leads to the same destination and there is only one decision which affects the ending. Or at least shows the secret ending.

That's pretty much what I did; no intention of actually buying it.

How can you have any intention of buying the game when you need a PS4 to play it? I guess you do like to exaggerate

From a locked thread:

If there is one thing I've learned from reading gaf, it's that there is a massive difference between 720p and 1080p... unless it's an Xbox One game, in which case is just a slight upgrade.

I don't know about that, everyone I have heard talking about it (like you mentioned, in a non-gaming environment) just watched it on YouTube.

Well I dont know if they just watched it on Youtube, but yeah, it is mainly non-gamers, which is the reason I was most surprised. The reception seems to be great with everyone too. I just hope it reflects in sales. The game deserves it. I am waiting everyday for that magic "1 million copies sold" announcement by Sony :)

Gee, I don't know, probably because you said Until Dawn is literally a movie, when it's clearly a game? Watching a PLAYTHROUGH of it on YouTube doesn't suddenly make it a movie. Even after your "clarification", I agree with Jigorath, it's nonsense. No further rebuttal necessary, you're factually wrong.

Uh-huh, again you're not actually debating the points I just made but trying to discredit a mistake made ages ago, carry on buster.

I watched about 80% of this movie on YouTube until I got bored of it.

No shit, you weren't invested in the choices someone else is making.

I've been in the threads recently complaining about Youtubers, but what worries me far more than kids being entertained by them is people on GAF deciding they can just watch the movie and not buy the game.

Guess I'm one of those crazy people who thinks you shouldn't be allowed to put the whole game on YouTube. Sure it's publicity, but the same people could play it for a hour on YouTube and then the whole thing wouldn't be there for the people who enjoy the content without paying for it. I'm worried about what it's going to do to games sales.

Edit: was responding to the only discussion happening in here. Not much to latch onto with the OP. Good news I guess? I hope the game is successful.

Because not everyone is a passive sheep like you and they like to have a hand in making that decision themselves? While you play, the likelihood of you fucking up and not getting what you want is also high. Also, it's fun seeing the reaction of your friends (assuming you have one) while playing the game.

As someone who has posted diatribe after diatribe about these minimally interactive, predominantly narrative only style adventure games, I think this is one of the few I've personally found entertaining just because of the quality of the writing and presentation. It's cheese, but it's self aware cheese, and does a good job being true to its inspiration.

Also I'll reiterate that as a shared experience, it's a lot of fun, probably a great party game except for maybe the length. I can totally see why people would enjoy watching it on Youtube.

These are the only factors I can figure are the reason I find this at least entertaining to watch, whereas Heavy Rain bored me to the point physical discomfort.

That's awesome to hear, the word of mouth form LPers really pushed the game.

And playing and watching the game are totally different experiences, watching is quite enjoyable, but no way near the same level as actually playing it.

I think it's just a difference in mindset, I know some people who just like watching games like this. While i'm the opposite. Games are an inheriently superior medium to me. Personally, until dawn beats out any other horror movie i've seen because of the interactive factor. It makes you more attached because of the weight of your actions.

Imagine the devs tackling a heist movie (oceans eleven, inception), or something like alien. There's just so many possiblities

But a large percentage won't be doing that, which was my point entirely. It's not like MGSV if you decided to watch the cutscenes, which would be disjointed as fuck since most of the background stuff is in the tapes, not to mention it's gameplay. If you decided to pay full price despite watching the entirety of it on Youtube then fair enough, your money but I can tell you right now that the majority won't. I also hope that friend comment wasn't a jab because not cool man.

And you know this how? Did you survey every single person who watch the LP? I watched so many LPs after I played the game and never at any point I got bored. Because comparing their play style with mine is fun. Again, you keep saying "I can tell you" as if you can read minds when you have no proof of this.

The friend comment is a reality whether you like it or not. Without friends, this kind of game is fun. But with friends, it's even more fun because then you have different sets of reactions and the way the game is played becomes different as well.

Good for them, word of mouth is going to be huge for this kind of game. Definitely a sleeper hit, hopefully Sony will get some press and media out there once October hits.

Getting great YouTube coverage is a massive seller for a lot of games because people will go out and buy them to play with their friends or make their own videos. Is there a segment of the population who will watch a game and then never play it? Sure, but every metric otherwise has indicated that YouTube sells games like hotcakes - it's a massive reason why Amnesia got the kind of success that it did.
