Upcoming Perfect Dark is possibly a Remake (from linkedin profile of Principle Technical Animator at The Initiative)

Getting a remake out before the new one is wise. Remind people why the original was liked so much. It also means that the artists and engineers can be productive while they are figuring out the new game.

How many Xbox gamers were even alive when Perfect Dark came out?

I'm amazed there is this much nostalgia for it.
The game launched in 2000. The first Xbox was 2001. So I'm not sure what the age of the Xbox brand would really have to do with the nostalgia. The more time that passes the more nostalgia there will be, it's only 3 years older than Goldeneye and was pretty popular as a late-gen n64 game, since it had so few shooters and people loved the 4 player co-op of the n64.

Tens of millions of players from the 2000 era are still active players, no doubt about it. Albeit now probably many with wife/husband and kids.

I don't think the platform it launched on is really that important, as far as the audience for the reboot/ remake. Clearly the interest and the audience is there, or they wouldn't have bothered with wasting time and money developing an expensive game.

Wait, he's working on three unreleased AAA games at once? Is that normal, because it seems like overkill. Unless this the sort of work that can be completed well before a game releases, so maybe he's already finished his work on at least one of those titles.

Also, I guess this confirms you can pet a dog in Perfect Dark, Dragon Age 4, and Bioshock 4.

The magazine is not wrong, it is a better game than Goldeneye.
i dont know... i liked it, but it kind of felt like a goldeneye skin that went a little further than the n64 hardware could handle.

maybe it just came out too late in the n64's life... like 1.5 years before the gamecube's release.

a full blown remake would be cool.

And this is part of my issue with how Goldeneye fans viewed PD over the years. If this were called Goldeneye 2, no one would be having a take like this. The same developer wanted to make a sequel to arguably one of their greatest games of all time, and in any other scenario it would be celebrated like a great sequel that took everything great about the first game and made it way more fun. Think of multiple examples like Timesplitters 2, or SSX Tricky, Mario Galaxy 2, or God of War 2(PS2).

Instead, because it doesn't have the 007 brand, it is sometimes looked at like a lesser title, a wannabe game, an expansion pack, etc. or as you've said 'a goldeneye skin'. It just doesn't make sense though because it's the same developer and a fully featured sequel that expanded upon most of their ideas from Goldeneye.

Reboot, remake, reimagining, remaster, rerelease... All these terms are thrown around interchangeably these days and have largely lost their meaning.

This is exactly what I was thinking more than ever reading this thread! I feel like "remaster" has a different definition every time it gets used!

I am not holding out for this game anymore (and The Initiative). They made such a huge deal out of building this amazing new team, The Initiative. That team has posted on their Twitter account:

2022: 1 time
2021: 2 times
2020: 1 time

No Google News results, except for 3 days ago from GamesRadar (just a Perfect Dark "what we know so far" article).

They opened in 2018. And that is all we get for 5 years besides their game announcement and Crystal Dynamic's involvement.

I wouldn't be surprised if they kill it.

Hopefully they show something this weekend otherwise I'm thinking you are probably right.

It's not dead. We have a huge news this year.
It's going to be a 2025 title.

I love that 360 Remaster/Remake - it plays perfect, it's awesome.

yup. one of the best remasters ever made. it has all new textures, weapon models, character models, skyboxes etc. but at first glance, if you haven't played the original in a long time, you will think that's how the game always looked like.
it basically is like your rosetinted nostalgia goggles version of Perfect Dark became reality

It would make sense and a smart move to start off with a remake, so that you understand the fundamentals of the game and what made it so great.

That's kinda what Nintendo did with Retro, since not all the team knew Metroid Prime they remade it and got the essence.
