Is NISA ever doing another visual novel?

yes.

visual novels take a lot more time than other kinds of games, and they're also not very profitable. it's a double-whammy, but there are some exceptions, like when there's a strong brand already associated with it like science adventure, zero escape, or an anime title.

They did Psycho Pass less than a year ago.

UtaPri!

Whatever they do, I hope it's something good.

i actually think this is a case of bad luck. as this series was taking off, the psp tanked in the us and disgaea infinite didn't light the sales charts on fire. then the vita game comes out as vita-only games are pretty hard. a switch/steam combo would make sense.

i wonder why it never comes up though. the series is pretty popular and nis works on it in japan.

I find NISA to be the most puzzling of the publishers with a JP parent company. I can understand why XSEED and even Altus would skip certain titles, but I'm not sure how NISA picks which ones to skip.

I assume the license is pretty expensive and that Broccoli had no interest in the western market, but it seems that we are at least getting the upcoming mobile game and at least NISA went from an outright no to a maybe on licensing the VNs.

I think the Switch ports make sense, but some games being skipped, like Coven and Hero Must Die, are real headscratchers. Perhaps a Switch port could happen for those games, even if Vita isn't possible? Hero Must Die is a pretty nice looking 3D game, for example.

Sup guys. Before I click the buy button - how's the Atelier Arland Trilogy on Vita. Performance? Gameplay? Is it fun? It's also 70% off so its AU$25.

I really want to try an Atelier game, and was waiting on Ayesha and Escha and Logy to go on sale because I have Shallie, but I suppose Arland will do. I heard Totori was good (or was that Meruru?)

Very fun games. Performance-wise, there is a lot of framerate drops, but they're bearable. I didn't feel it took the fun out of the game (it's not like New Little King's Story where it was bad to that point).

Totori is the best one, imo, but honestly, there really is no consensus. You'll find just as many fans of Meruru and Rorona as you will Totori. Same goes for the other Atelier games. Having said that, those heathens are all wrong. Totori is truly 100% the best.

Yay! Guess I'm getting it then! Kinda wanted to double check performance wasn't as bad as Firis because I heard that wasn't great on the Vita.

Just went to Kresinik's blog and he has Meruru and Totori in his Vita Top 10, so that's two votes to buy it then.

And just for the record how's Sophie's performance on the Vita, I can also get it on Steam so its a matter of performance or portability really.

Yay, you used my blog! Thank you :)

I haven't written more detailed reviews for them yet because I wanna replay them first, but Totori and Meruru are two of my favourite Vita games. Rorona is also excellent, but a tier below those two.

First off, they're much better JRPG's than you'd think. Combat is fun; imo, but the real kicker is the world-exploration. They're generally massive games with loads of places to explore, and there's a real sense of adventure in doing so. Alchemy systems are competent, not my favourite part of the games but they're there.

It's the stories that blew me away though. Particularly Totori. They're worlds apart from your average JRPG in that they're not all about 'save-the-world', but normally one goal which each alchemist is trying to achieve. Totori is to find her lost mother. Meruru is to rebuild her kingdom. They focus much more heavily on character interaction and relationship-building but they're so much better for that, it really makes them feel special.

Side note, I'd say Meruru is slightly better simply because the kingdom-building is a fantastic meta-game (you craft items and collect gold to rebuild parts of the kingdom - for example, you might find an old plot of land and slowly turn it into a farm over the course of three years); plus, it's nice to see the endings of the storyline of all the characters from the previous games. There's a lot more bonus content which is very difficult but fun too.

The Dusk games are still great, but not quite as good.

In terms of performance... they're not fantastic. Meruru in particular has loads of pop-in, but none of them are unplayable (especially considering they're all turn-based JRPGs).

I'm told Sophie is the best Atelier port on Vita of all, but I haven't played it myself to confirm.

Btw, for anyone interested in the sale - don't sleep on Ar no Surge Plus. Oddly epic space-opera game with a fun storyline and combat system.

Thanks for the write up! I vaguely remembered there were Atelier games in your Top 50 so I went to check. I'm pretty excited to finally play them. It's weird they are such fan favourites because I remember back in the day, most of the bigger websites like IGN didn't think much of them. Rorona got a 5/10 from IGN according to Wikiepdia.

I'm still a few weeks from getting to it, I'm still playing Steins;Gate 0 and then Utawarerumono after that, but I'll report back when I do.

That's for the PS3 version. It's like looking at the original Neptunia game reviews.

Purchases:

Atelier Sophie; Entwined; Front Mission 3; Flow; Garou; Persona 1; Silent Hill; Tactics Ogre.

Very happy. £35 for the lot of them.

I bought Growlanser IV. Will probably buy Yomawari, Ar no Surge+ and Digimon Next Order (ps4) as well. Although, Tactics Ogre is tempting. Square should remaster that game and War of the Lions.

Good shout on Ar no Surge!

It's a very good price for both Growlanser and Gungnir, but I passed on both for now. May pick them up later in the month.

Has anyone played Stranger in Sword City? I'm going to play the demo after I get off work, but wanted to know if the story was good or not. Though that probably won't matter much to me because the art in this game is amazing!!! I could use more games that look like this.

Growlanser is awesome, but man is it long. I have to pick it up again, not even sure how close I am to the end. The battle system took awhile for me to get used to. There were loads of times where I wanted to throw my vita against the wall. That's only because I was being a perfectionist and wanted the best ranks.

It's a DRPG. There's not much to the story.

Just the three Atelier Arland Games, Dariusburst (cause I skipped the LRG version) and Everybody's Golf for me. The Big in Japan sale is easily the best sale every year.

I wanted to get Odin Sphere, Disgaea 4, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 but my wallet said no.

I also wanted to get Soul Calibur V and Tekken Tag 2 on the PS3 but I'd probably never play them. The PS3 is like the most amazing machine for fighters ever. It has slmost everything!

The PSN sale is amazing, but sadly no Dusk Atelier games. Still miss those on my EU account.

Time to finally grab Ar no Surge!

Yeah, I was hoping to grab Atelier Ayesha and it's literally like everything BUT Atelier Ayesha lol.

I know this will sadly likely end up being off-topic, but I'm really excited to see what those three new Aquaplus games are.

I mean, Aquaplus haven't been burnt by Vita fans yet - Utawarerumono sold very well and Dungeon Travelers 2-2 did too. I'm hopeful the spring 2018 game might still hit the console (although whether it comes west is another story).

I've finished SoSC and absolutely loved it. Best dungeon crawl on the Vita as far as I'm concerned. Story is at least fairly original for a Swords and sorcery game, the 'strangers' are humans from our world stuck in their world, and the story concerns their quest to get home.

One game is 100% more than I expected. Two is overkill.

Math post: 1 is not 100% more than zero.

So just to recap, North American announcements coming out of Anime Expo '17:

  • Demon Gaze II
  • Penny-Pinching Princess
  • Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly
  • Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk
  • 7’scarlet
  • Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]
  • Drive Girls
  • Coven Labyrinth of Refrain

Can someone in the know list these with genre [drpg, vn, etc] and maybe even a super short description?

Demon Gaze 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean I've played a bunch of DRPG's with varying amounts of story. Some that make it the core, and others that stick to mainly dungeon crawling. I'm guesses that this is story light then.

You're sucked into a world of dungeons and butterflies with great art. Go!

Regarding the EU sale, I'd have jumped on Senran Kagura Bon Appétit! so many times already if they ever reduced the DLC pack too (Gessen X Hebijo). Realistically is there anyone we can poke anywhere to ask why that never seems to get any discount love? I'm sure I can't be the only one put off jumping in for this reason

Demon Gaze II - DRPG where demons are your party members, now with added touching "maintenance" and fatter elves.
Penny-Punching Princess - ARPG where you fight using money, and get money instead of experience. I think there's a base building part too? You can play as the zombie girl as well.
Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly - VN about armed amnesiacs stuck in a mansion with each other. Betrayal and butterfly hunts ensue.
(There's, erm, a bit more to it than that, admittedly).
Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk - VN, and standalone sequel to Black Butterfly. In a town where feuding clans vie for power and spring never comes, Jed has spent her life in hiding, pretending to be a boy to avoid accusations of witchcraft. In the run-up to a town celebration she's tasked with finding an artifact... and then the shit starts to hit the fan.
7'scarlet - VN. Ichiko's brother went missing in the isolated mountain town of Okunezato, but the town is known for far more than missing people - it's host to myths and legends galore. Upon discovering that an online Occult Club is planning a visit her friend suggests they go with them and use the opportunity to investigate his disappearance.
Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] - Fighting Game. An updated version of Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late which has a thread over here. I'm... not good with fighting game stuff.
Drive Girls - Action game where Car Girls fight mechanical bugs. It's already out in the UK but I didn't pick it up yet. The picture of the commander they stuck on Amazon probably says more than the screenshots I picked but putting it up here seems like it would be a bad plan.

(The screenshots are shamelessly borrowed from all over the place).

Shush!

Time to import Collar x Malice since it's not getting a physical EU release.

Damn it, Aksys.

Err, what?

Glad I didn't get in a flap about getting Period Cube EU version then. It'll sit with my NA copy of Code Realize then, I guess.

(The screenshots are shamelessly borrowed from all over the place).

Nice post! Cannot begin to say how excited I am for Demon Gaze II and Psychedelica.

Need suggestions for an RPG from the recent EU Japan Vita sale... I want something similar to a top down zelda. Considering the Suikoden games but don't really want anything that is grind heavy.... I have Ys Celceta and found that combat a tad mashy for me and I didn't like traversing the massive maze maps...

Dragon Quest builders?

What do you all think?

Dragon Quest Builders is amazing. Definitely in my top 5 for Vita games.

i wonder if Aksys really have given up on EU physicals does that mean no Nonary Games for Vita? maybe they just need to use someone like pqube to release their games here because honestly 1 retailer getting their games and another third party on amazon grossly overpricing them is really annoying

Vita save management is dumb. I installed a 2GB DLC and now I can't delete the DLC without also losing my save files. Even if I manually delete the DLC files, my saves won't load anyway because the DLC isn't installed (and I haven't even touched the DLC).

Also I accidentally deleted my Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth save without backing it up first

None of this would be a problem if memory cards weren't so stupidly expensive :(
