A look at the output of Sony Interactive Entertainment for 2025

Remakes can't be counted as truly new games, unless it's something like RE where they had to make entire thing from scratch (or even FFVIII Remake). The Last of Us Part 1 remake is a revision of TLOU1, not total game changer. Demon's Souls is just graphics/performance update. Horizon is a total joke...

People that still have PS4 - what is the reason for them to upgrade when half of games are were released on PS4 anyway?

I don't need to include remakes to have a strong list of games.

The same reason people upgrade from a PS4, people upgrade their PCs - to play the games at a higher visual or performance level.

I don't see this strong lineup. More like wet fart after 4 years.

And 2025 list outside of DS2 and (potentially) GoY looks weak as well.

Previous gens had much better lineup from Sony. Let's agree to disagree here.

Demons Souls
Spider-Man Miles Morales
Returnal
Ratchet
God of War Ragnarok
Gran Turismo 7
Horizon Forbidden West
Spider-Man 2
Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy Rebirth
Helldivers 2
Rise of the Ronin
Stellar Blade
AstroBot

I'm sorry, that's not a weak lineup in 4 years.

PS3 had basically Killzone 2, Uncharted 1/2, Demons Souls, and some smaller titles of course. PS4 had bloodborne and uncharted 4.

PS3 had MGS4 out in year two, which was arguably a much bigger deal than any one of those games. 🤷‍♂️

That’s the best route to take with Lost guy. Whatever the current gen is, he will say that is the best gen of Sony games. You’re talking to a dude who made pages of posts defending games like Concord and criticizing “woke” hate on Intergalactic while he himself will bitch any time a game has a female character.

You are absolutely correct that PS3 was much better and it was better because Sony was facing strong competition from Nintendo and Xbox. They had to dig deep and what we got were amazing new first party franchises.

Now Sony doesn’t really need to try. Just look at that list of games Lost guy posted. It’s almost entirely remakes, cross gen sequels, and third party games. Dude listed Final Fantasy XVI. Pathetic list compared to past generations. We’re four years in.

Not based on any objective metric like sales or quality. MGS4 was derided as the worst in the series.

Derided much after the fact but that doesn't change the impact it had at launch.

Besides maybe Spider Man 2, none of those games matches MGS4s initial sales, and games like Rebirth and Rebirth disappointed per Square's president so some examples are immediately invalid.

And it has the same meta as Astro, so it's better in terms of 'quality' than all but one in that list. Games like Rise of Ronin shouldn't be there when you're talking about this kind of quality.

but so far Sony output is weak (and it doesn't look much better in the future).
I think sony will end the gen strong. SSM, ND, GG, Insomniac, Bend, Bluepoint, MM, Sucker Punch and housemarque are all due for games in between 2025-2027. they will average 3 AAA games a year which is roughly what they did last gen from 2015 to 2020 with 2019 being the sole exception with just 2 big AAA games.

The biggest problem is last gen they worked with these major studios to do first party games like Detroit, Spiderman, SOTC remake, and Until Dawn. This gen, those dollars have gone to trash like Concord, Fair Games, and 3-4 different cancelled GaaS shooters. Rise of Ronin was no Bloodborne, and Supermassive and Quantic Dream parternships were not replaced either.

At least they bought BP and Housemarque. That will materialize in the second half of this generation.

2025
Death Stranding 2
Ghost of Tsushima 2

2026
Wolverine
Intergellactic
Housemarque's new game
Bluepoint's new game?

2027
Horizon 3
SSM's new game
Bend's new game
MM's new game

I am not counting GaaS trash like Fair Games, Marathon and whatever else they will waste their money on, because they will suck just like Concord. There is no way they can make hero and extraction shooters fun. Even if they pay you to play them.

I just hope in terms of third party, they stop funding C tier games like Rise of Ronin, Stellar Blade and half of the chinese/south korean ripoffs in the OP and put that money back into the talented first party studios. Quality over quantity and all the quality is at those first party studios. not in fucking south korea or china. Kill the square enix deals too. Between FF16, Forspoken and FF7 rebirth, i dont think ive been more disappointed by a japanese developer this gen. it was admirable but time to move on from that dying publisher.

Helldivers 2, Horizon: FW, Ragnarok, Miles Morales, and SM2 all outsold MGS4. GT7 may have outsold it as well.

I never said *ALL* those games beat MGS4, but many of them did and it's just one game.

I'm gonna guess it's a fair bet Sony has already paid them buckets of money for the third FFVII game to be timed exclusive to PS5/6 for a bit.

For reference, this was SIE's (retail) output for PS4 in 2018:
-The Inpatient (XDEV Studio Europe, January 24, 2018) PSVR
-Shadow of the Colossus (Japan Studio, February 8, 2018)
-Bravo Team (XDEV Studio Europe, March 7, 2018) PSVR
-MLB The Show 18 (San Diego Studio, March 27, 2018)
-God of War (Santa Monica Studio, April 20, 2018)
-Detroit: Become Human (XDEV Studio Europe, May 25, 2018)
-Track Lab (XDEV Studio Europe, August 22, 2018) PSVR
-Firewall: Zero Hour (San Mateo Studio, August 28, 2018) PSVR
-Marvel's Spider-Man (San Mateo Studio, September 7, 2018)
-Astro Bot Rescue Mission (Japan Studio, October 4, 2018) PSVR
-Déraciné (Japan Studio, November 8, 2018) PSVR
-Chimparty (XDEV Studio Europe November 14, 2018)
-Frantics (XDEV Studio Europe, November 14, 2018)
-Knowledge is Power: Decades (XDEV Studio Europe, November 14, 2018)
14 games, only 4 internally-developed ones (SOTC, MLB, GOW and Astro), and about half of them required a PSVR headset.
Only two big heavy hitters (God of War and the externally-developed Spider-Man, notice something there?), and four of those 2018 games were announced within the same year of release (all the ones from the fall except for Frantics).

It was so weak that I started digging into PS4 store yesterday, to find games to buy on the PS5. Already have almost all of PS5 games on PC

Sony could be saving GT 8 for ps6, Horizon 3 will be a good game, we’re going to get Ghost of Tshuma 2, another super hero game, don’t know about Intergalatic, Ratchet, they say last of us 3 that journey with Ellie and Abby continues.

I hope Guerilla is done with Horizon after 3. The Lego game showed there isn't a wider audience for that world, so even though Horizon games sell well, they run the risk of milking that series dry soon.

This is exactly why I've moved on from PS for the most part. I know that list appeals to many people but I'm not one of them. People have different preferences.
