Upgrade to Windows 10?

It seems games perform worse on the whole and InputMapper doesn't work properly. I don't see why I would upgrade straight away on a pure gaming machine.

Evidence?

I've not noticed any game running worse myself and I've seen multiple people saying that games are running better.

What isn't working with the input mapper? I've used an Xbox One controller, a PS4 controller with a xinput wrapper and the traditional Keyboard/Mouse on several games and had no issues.

Anyone running W10 run into any compability issues with older games on Steam or anything like that? (Question goes for up to now and from tomorrow, obviously).

I will wait for some reviews and gaming-related GAF impressions of the final version tomorrow before jumping in myself.

KOTOR 2 runs great, I haven't tried the latest update.

Garrysmod and older valve titles run good.

I'm upgrading regardless as I can't stand the win8.1 start menu. What a dumb idea.

Why do people need the start menu will always be beyond me. There's nothing I can't access from shortcuts or typing in the search.

And then there's the taskbar.

It's good though that it's officially coming back.

From what I can tell, if it worked on Win8/8.1, it will work the same on Win10 since it's practically a third edition/service pack release of Win8. I haven't had any problems running newer games so far, so if you're asking, you should list what you're specifically interested in so, at least, someone can go and test if they have it.

Dualshock 4 doesnt work properly at the moment. Talk is that it may not do so for a while. So if you are gaming with a sony controller I'd hold off.

Sorry to harp on the same thing, but does anyone really know exactly how the windows 10 license works when you use it as an upgrade from Windows 7? We have been told by Microsoft representatives that it is possible to clean install windows 7 after upgrading from Windows 7 or 8. But do we know how that works yet? I know we can only put it on the same device we upgraded our old OS on, but I'm still not clear how it lets us do a clean installation after the upgrade like we've been told we are able to do.

Hit Reset PC and do a clean install.

I've been running Windows 10 for a while, and the only game I've had real trouble with is Ryse. It had some very noticable stutter no matter what I did. I have a 5820K and a Titan X, so I was pretty sure it wasn't my hardware. Booted up Windows 7 instead, and it ran flawlessly.

Also some trouble with my Xbox One controller in The Swindle and Not a Hero.

That's a neat feature! But how does that work if you want to slap the OS onto a different hard drive in your machine? Does it work from there? Or if you install a different OS and want to come back to 10 after the free upgrade year is over? Is there any sort of proof of ownership you get like a key that will let you do this?

I'm pretty sure that if you use the clean install option it will give you a choice on what drive to install it on.

Okay cool. But after I do the upgrade, have they said anything about wiping 10 and then coming back to it later? Do we know anything? I don't want to lose any flexibility of installation and reinstallation I have with 7 just because I accepted the free offer, or is that just how it's probably gonna be?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't replace your Windows 7 key and that Windows 7 key will continue to work if you want to use it.

Upgrading to Windows 10 ASAP is an easy decision.

Nearly all people who have used the preview are saying this is another winner like Windows 7.

Ever since upgrading to Win 8.1 I've been missing pretty much everything about Windows 7, especially Aero and the UI. Windows 10 by the looks of it is half a step forward, but also two steps backwards. If I wouldn't have missed some key kernel improvements in Windows 8.1 I would have been using Windows 7 on all my PCs for the foreseeable future (just as I kept using Windows 2000 through Windows XP and Vista). For now it seems I'll stick to using Win8.1+Classic Shell.

So for those who have used windows 10 so far hows the overall gaming performance compared to 8.1 in recent games. (dragon age inquisition, witcher 3, ect)

My gaming PC is getting the Upgrade. I am not so sure about my Ultrabook atm.

Did anyone try Win 10 on their Ultrabook / Notebook ? I am running an Intel Core i5 4200U, 1,6GHz, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel HD 4400 on Win 8.1 Pro (Sony Vaio).

Does it run good? Is Battery life effected? How are the Drivers? Does the Vaio Software work on win10?

I am running this on my WinBook TW801 and have seen improved performance. Your netbook is a lot more powerful so you should have no performance hit.

I can't answer for the Viao software, unfortunately. If it involves driver support specifically from that software, I'd hold off from upgrading until you can verify that it works.

From what I've read it does NOT give you the option to choose the drive to install on. I hope someone can confirm this either way because come tomorrow, I am planning to upgrade but only if I can afterwards re-install Windows 10 on my newer SSD which I've been planning to do for months now.

There was an Intel bug that was cutting battery by about 10% on some laptops/ultrabooks that Microsoft and Intel were addressing. I'm not sure if a fix has been pushed yet though. Other than that it's been pretty good on my laptop.

Yeah I've been using the Preview since the Spring and at no time have I wanted to switch to an older Windows. Its like its what they envisioned Win 8 to be, but GOOD this time.

I'm still on Windows 7, skipped 8 and 8.1. I don't actually have a specific game in mind... just wary of first launch versions in general and wanted to hear if someone already did some testing with older games (like, say, the Commando games and other such legacy titles).

But maybe this isn't actually something to be worried about anymore, I don't know. The last time I got burned upgrading an OS was when I couldn't get Silver to run on Windows XP. :lol

Yeah it's Sony and as they sold their Vaio brand and the staff has been greatly reduced by the new owners I doubt they are going to do anything soon...

Thanks for the informations. In these case I'll just wait for a couple of weeks. It is not like the offer is going to end soon.

One worry i have is that some games i play need the DEP exception to work (Tomb Raider anniversary and Dark Souls with 60fps fix, to mention two) how does that work on 10?

I really don't understand people who "upgrade" straight away.

But thank you for beta testing it for me.

The answer is: DX12

That is all
If that's your whole reasoning, which games use DX12?

Followup: which game will be the first one where DX12 makes an appreciable difference? Which game will be the first one that requires DX12? Those dates will be key. I think DX12 is a valid reason to upgrade, but it's not a reason that pushes people to update tomorrow.

That said, all I need to hear is that it's free and that it won't be worse than 7, which is what's currently happening. After observing the canaries for a couple days, I'll be ready to do the upgrade myself.

Will that even make a big difference, if you don't have a 6cores processor?

Of course singlethread performance, core clock speed and number of cores will still be very important with DX 12.
But with DX11 everything had to go through one core (core 0). So the load wasn't leveld because everything that core 1,2,3 etc. did had to go through core 0 to the gpu.
As fas as I understand it, dx 12 changes that and allows every cpu core to directly communicate with your gpu instead of just core "0".
And that is the big game changer here as it allows you to level the CPU load very consistent between cores. So even a 2 cores CPU should profit from this.
I even expect my i5 3570k to last one or two years longer because of this.

Please keep in mind this is a very simple explanation. It even might be wrong as I am just a PC hobbyist.

This is something I need to know too, since I'm in the same exact situation as you.

I dunno, maybe they'll add Win 10 to Dreamspark soon so I can just get the license/iso from there.

If you upgrade the OS I don't think it does but I'm not a 100% sure. If you make a boot USB of Winodws 10 then you can (you could use the technical preview or at worse another copy of Windows 7/8 then upgrade from that)!

Hmm, it looks like Dreamspark has the 10 insider preview (ver. 10074) for students, that one upgrades to full Win 10 Pro for free tomorrow (or this week), right? Maybe the easiest way for me to go would be to install the preview version on the new SSD and just keep updating from there.

I'm a bit fuzzy on the preview stuff and if all the preview version's upgrade to full version, since it seems that anyone can just go and grab the preview

Anyone try CS:GO on W10 yet? That takes up so much of my PC time that if that runs better I'll upgrade asap without giving a shit about the negatives.

Going to be going from W8.1 to W10.

Will be doing it as a clean install as I tend to do a full clean install of windows every 18 months or so.

I used to hate the idea that I had to type in what I wanted, but now it is second nature. Although Windows 10 looks to show you your most recently used apps on the new start menu? I think that sounds like a nice feature too.

I'll be upgrading and doing a clean install if possible. Been waiting for 10 to come out before buying an SSD.

Will they let me download an .ISO and give me a key or do I gotta do the clean install through Windows?

Hopefully they get their shit together fast. Tons of people have been having issues with the new update feature that also allows Windows to update your GPU drivers. Twice now I've booted up with old GPU drivers because Windows was automatically updating to the latest non-beta drivers, whereas Nvidia's only Windows 10 drivers were in beta up until yesterday. I don't like the idea of Windows updating my GPU drivers without my knowledge, especially if it's going to interfere with the ability to use beta drivers. Seems like a simple fix, but I don't know if it's actually been fixed yet.

They also desperately need to clean up the Windows App Store if they plan on utilizing it at all this time around. Thing's a bigger disaster than the Google Play Store.

And the Xbox streaming feature has actually gotten worse with the updates. Now it has this feature that automatically turns off streaming if you tab out of the program when it's in fullscreen, and there's no borderless windowed option. There's also three quality settings, and only low and medium do anything. The high setting doesn't seem to do anything at all, making the quality difference between the stream and the original Xbox One footage very noticeable.

And finally, a small issue that I don't understand the existence of. That option that's supposed to change your color scheme based on your wallpaper doesn't work if it's a slideshow. This wasn't an issue in Windows 8.

Edit: Not sure why you would bother with a clean install. You haven't come up with a better solution to something than the people who created that OS. Just install like normal, and delete windows.old
