The United States and Russia have reached agreement on a cease-fire in southwest Syria, three U.S. officials said Friday as President Donald Trump held his first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The deal marks a new level of involvement for the U.S. in trying to resolve Syria's civil war. Although details about the agreement and how it will be implemented weren't immediately available, the cease-fire is set to take effect Sunday at noon Damascus time, said the officials, who weren't authorized to discuss the cease-fire publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Jordan and Israel also are part of the agreement, one of the officials said. The two U.S. allies both share a border with the southern part of Syria and have been concerned about violence from Syria's civil war spilling over the border.

Unclear what if anything was negotiated, terms haven't been released.

all sanctions stand, and pass the senate advanced sanctions bill.
we keep the compounds and auction them off.

nothing to russia or putin.

If they want cease fire then they'll have a ceasefire and thats it.

Worth noting that Russia doesn't want to be in Syria forever and would probably be looking for an exit no matter what the US does.

Trump making Syria great again

I wonder if the rebels would participate in a cease fire, and if Assad is cool with just letting them be. Seems highly unlikely.

They worked with Assad to help him gas his own people, created a lot of refugees for other countries to take in, increasing tensions and enabling far right wing parties they fund.

Now they can pull out of a scenario they helped create in return for removing sanctions and god knows what else.

Basically. Assad is also in a much better position than he was when Russia entered the war, if they can get a nice reward from Trump at this point I wouldn't be shocked if they took it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Congress pass a bill that basically removes Trump the right to lift sanctions on Russia?

I do agree that the only reason Russia would back out of Syria is if it benefits them, otherwise, whats the point?

Russia uses Syria for military bases. I assure you they want to be there for a very long time.

It's their answer to the US having bases and flight permission in Turkey.

Even John Kerry and Obama never had ceasefires*. Where's your messiah now, libtards?

*they did. I hope this holds. Don't care who called for it.

Passed the Senate, but it's still being held up in the House because they're completely complicit.

That bill hasn't passed the House. Trump can currently lift some sanctions but not all of them. He will certainly attempt the stop the Congressional bill from being approved.

Ah, thanks. Its tough to keep up w/ everything going on w/ this Presidency.

So yeah....he'll lift some sanction I'm sure. Probably why their meeting went so long today.

Takes a while to list all that top-secret intel.

Hopefully, Congress can pass its own sanctions if possible, but the current bill is having trouble in the House.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/07/06/russia-sanctions-problems-house-240275

"House Republicans are prepared to send the Iran-Russia sanctions bill papers back, which will allow the Senate to automatically resend us a fixed bill, but House Democrats are blocking that and demanding their own changes to the bill," AshLee Strong, spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan, wrote in an email.

Two House Democratic aides told POLITICO that Thursday's hurdle arose because the agreed-upon fix would weaken a key provision in the sanctions bill — empowering Congress to block Trump from ending or easing sanctions against Moscow. The proposed fix, according to the Democratic aides, would make it harder for the House minority to force a vote blocking Trump's sanctions policy by no longer treating any disapproval measure as a privileged resolution.
Fucking hell.

This forum is getting so exhausting to read. Doesnt matter matter what thread or subject it is, always Trump Trump Trump, Putin Putin putin.

How do you suggest that the US handled Syria? Should they support Kurds and Sunni militias in a war against goverment forces? What good would that bring?

I agree that a ceasefire with russia might not be worth a lot, but is there really an preferable option?

I agree. I can't stand Trump, but I hardly see this reported ceasefire as a bad thing.

I think a lot of people forget that it's okay to once in a while give credit to their political opposition.

i think nobody here has a problem with simply a ceasefire happening. What the problem is they are looking what could come next, like lifting sanctions or Russia being forgiven in some way for the election fuckery.

"forgiveness" wouldn't be acceptable for saving thousands of lives in Syria? Bc to me it is.

You can always add sanctions no?

No forgiveness wouldnt be acceptable since Russia started all their shit to begin with. They have done a bunch of unprovoked shit and definitely do not earn any good points for walking them back,e specially after the shit they have pulled lately.

Except that literally thousands of lives would be saved in Syria?

Unless al Assad's military is part of this cease-fire, it IS meaningless.

Al Assad has mostly been attacking non-ISIS, anti-regime rebels. The US supports regime change, or at least it did before Trump took over.

Now, al Assad may have a green light to bomb them all into oblivion. Civilians be damned.

No one has explained why this one is different from the other ones. The forces doing the fighting don't all answer to Russia or the US as we've seen with prior ceasefires.

There's also still fighting going on in Ukraine despite similar arrangements.

I'm having a hard time understanding how a US/Russian ceasefire is going to save thousands of lives in the Syrian Civil War. I'm sure there's some nuance I'm missing, but this just comes off like some blatantly telegraphed political theater.

"See, this Putin guy isn't so bad after all!"

Trump & Puty <3 Syrians

Agreed. But same time, trump is the leader of the only remaining superpower and he is truly fucking many things up.

It won't. It's just either misunderstanding or a will full misrepresentation of the conflict.

Will have to see what the details are to determine if this is positive or not. How long will this cease-fire last? Has Assad agreed to it? What is the US and allies giving to Russia to make this work?

As it stands, I could totally see the cease fire starting, Trump takes sanctions off of Russia, Russia goes back in immediately knowing that due to partisan gridlock the US will never be able to enforce new sanctions, and we end up with the same amount of conflict with fewer sanctions on one of our number one enemies. I have no faith in the Trump admin's diplomacy and I sincerely hope that this doesn't come back to bite us

In what world would you possibly be optimistic that Assad Putin and Trump would come to a deal that was good for civilians in Syria?
