I've reached Chapter 10 now, and the main mission there is the first one that felt really long to me. But after trying it a few times and attempting to perfect it, I was able to clear it with an A rank, getting what I think are all the elites on the map.

One problem. I lost Wendy to a lancer, after a grenade and focused close-range fire failed to take him down. The lancer claimed her body immediately after, and, well, that was that.

It's a very long mission, but I could have done a little better. I brought in some new shocktroopers for the mission(Wendy among them), but I forgot to give them the better guns that some of my other troopers had equipped. Those more accurate, more powerful weapons would have helped a great deal in minimizing damage and casualties. But... it's a lot of time to commit to doing it again.

What should I do?

Game FINALLY came today. Can't wait to get this started. Will be a nice break from all the action games I have been playing.

Now that it's been established that KO'd troops return in the 'new game +' I'd take the A rank and move on.

And chp.14,
holy crap at Alicia awakening and kicking Selvaria's arse, Super-Bitch deserved it. Although saying that, she wasn't nearly as terrifying in chp13 as she was in chp.7.

Chp.13 question.
How quickly can Selvaria get to your base after she appears? Also Verrot said something about using tank guns to slow her down, will anti-tank rounds affect her this time. I rushed taking down the mortar base on the 2nd turn and only had a couple of CP left, and the eidelweiss got hit by a gatling bunker. I think I'll take it a bit slower, take out both gatling bunkers, and try to conserve CP for when she shows up.

I started the level just like you did, i took the mortar base in the second turn. After that i used Alicia, Rosie, Largo (and the mortar order once) to clean out the objective. Rosie and Largo went in the front while i took Alicia round the back afair. If you took the mortar base by round 2 you should be able to win the scenario in round 4 = A/S rank (as far as i remember=) (

I managed an 'A', but in 5 turns.

Chp.13 spoilers.

I placed a sniper and 3 scouts in the left base, and Rosie and Largo in the right base. I took my sniper up to the tower near the right base and cleared out some of the soldiers in the open. I sent two of the scouts to the right base with the gatling bunker, using splash damage from a grenade to knock the trooper out and hit the fuel cell thing. I sent another scout to the left of the map and used a grenade on the fuel cell next to the other gatling gun. I called a lancer from the right base I'd captured, then used my scouts to clear out the right side, and a combination of the other scout and sniper to clear out the right.

Then I went to the centre base, used a grenade from the tower nearby to bring the two trooper guarding it out of cover, then finished them off. This was the 4th turn and I had about 11 CP left. So instead of taking the base I ended my turn. Started the 5th turn with 20CP. Took the base so Selvaria arrived. Then used my scouts to grenade the guys around the enemy base camp, before bringing my lancer to take out the tank, finished up the rest of the enemies and took the camp. I reckon if I was a bit more efficient in the early stages I could get it down to 4 turns, but an As and A.

How does one get the thrid (and final?) entry in the recruits' biographies? At first I thought that you needed to have that unit in the last fight but then I remembered that I had one with me while fighting the last boss and the bio didn't get updated.

Also, in N+ you don't get your full roster right off the bat. I'm assuming that they'll arrive later on which means I'll have to kill off Oscar once again to get Emile -__-

EDIT: Scratch the last part. You don't have to kill off Oscar permamently to get Emile.

I had wondered about that, because I know you can rescue
Karl
and still get the extra recruit.

It'd be a bit of a bastard move for them to make you kill characters to get other characters.

God, I wish there was an easy way to get back to book mode. I really messed up the Chp.14 battle and I want to restart again, knowing better what will happen. Now usually I keep a pre-battle book mode save to get around it but I accidentally saved over it with a mid-battle save. Now I have to get myself killed in order to get back to the battle setup.

Ok I need some tips for chapter 15b,
Selveria is raping any scouts I use to dash up the stairs on the left. I can destroy the tank on the right with largo and the turret on the left with ease, it's getting my team close enough and safe enough that's the problem.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
Goddammit (end of Chapter 15 spoilers)

I said it before that I do like the character of Selvaria (which is why she is my avatar), but I hate her treatment in the game. Throughout the entire game she was a one sided character who did it for maximillian, she showed ZERO development. Even in the end when she got captured by that reprehensible general, she showed a kind side to Alicia, but she was still a one sided character.

She was developed extremely poorly, I was hoping that she would be far more development in terms of storyline, and in terms of the grand picture. Unfortunately they just relegated her to buxom eye candy instead of making her a great villain

The game is amazing, but if I do have anything to complain about, it is on Selvaria's character development.

The great villan always was and always will be Maximillian. Think it was pretty from the PVs and from relatively early on in the story that
Selvaria was just a puppet, no more, no less...
Not that that makes it right, but yeah...I can see where you're coming from. TBH, I think even Edy had a little bit more to her than Selvaria has had overall...then again, she's been the most popular character from the game in Japan from the get-go.

Note that Edy "runs" the JPN Valkyria blog too :p

I wonder if that has anything with her being a tsundere character. I noticed this when I swapped her out of my squad.

What makes Edy so popular? I've never thought of her as anything other than a generic trooper. Who I don't use. Ain't no room for Rosie-haters in Squad 7 as long as I'm in charge.

To any Canadians in this thread:

Did you get a manual with this game? I just picked it up from EB an hour ago and my copy didn't come with a manual; not even a French one! I went back to EB to ask about it, but they couldn't check another copy because the only copies they had were for other preorders. The game was shrink-wrapped, but that's really not a guarantee of anything.

I haven't opened my copy yet, but I looked through the top and I can see the manual. I would return your copy and get your money back and go pick it up somewhere else, it sounds like that one has been tampered with.

Yeah, normally I would do that, but the only reason I got the game at EB was because I was able to use the November trade 2 deal that's going on right now. I'm actually not sure what kind of credit they would give me in this case.

Oh well, I already spoke to one of the employees there and the manager is supposed to get back to me.

yeah instead they tried to capture the context of original script and turn it into Western-styled dialogues.

It's uncomfortable at first but then I got used to it.

I do agree with you about maximillian, just look at post number 1902 where I say.....

I do agree with you that in the videogame medium of storytelling, having a sympathetic villain many not be the best. After all, why spend 10-60 hours in a game to find out that the villain you hated the entire time was actually not a bad person. One of the best examples of it is Tales of the Abyss that came out a while back, the villains are not necessarily evil. They are after the same ultimate goal as the protagonists, but they have a different interpretation on how they should reach this goal. It is quite disheartening to know that your cast of protagonists could easily have been the antagonists.

In a game, people like the idea of black and white characters. While I still stand by my assertion that there are shades of grey for the Triumviri (Not so evil - Gen. Jaeger, Evil with some humanity - Gen. Gregor, Absolutely evil that can garner some sympathy - Gen. Selvaria), but there is a character that is absolutely evil in Valkyria, and that is Maximillian. He is the classic videogame supervillian who has no redeeming qualities.

The Galcian/Ramirez relationship is eerily similar to the Selvaria/Maximillian relationship. Hell, it is the same thing but with a man and a woman. I guess the Skies of Arcadia team likes to keep this villain dynamic.

I made that assertion about Maximillian 5 chapters ago and it holds more true even now

Ironically enough
my assertion about Selvaria has changed a bit, instead of her being a character who is absolutely evil, she is more of a devoted character to the end. She is like a dog who loyally serves their master until death. It just so happens that the person that saved her from her personal hell was an evil man. Had someone like Welkin's father saved her, she probably would have been an exceedingly good person, like Isara. So you can argue this dynamic of Isara/Selvaria in that they both were ostracized, but one had a good caretaker, while the other didn't.

With that said, I still hate how they treated the character. Hopefully if there is a Valkyria Chronicles 2 that they will treat the buxom villain far better.

So this game is amazing, easily my GOTY. Man it just came out of nowhere to revolutionize the genre, and with such polish and in such a classy way, it's just so enjoyable.

And as an aside, Chapter 3 "Summons, part 4" had some... interesting and subtle undertones for an RPG...
Alicia makes a comment about remembering how she was "busting her buns" in reference to the bakery and wants to get back to the ovens, then Welkin says he'd be first in line to "get some of that bread", and then she says she'll have it "ready and waiting" for him? That's like a James Bond conversation. :lol

Yep. Normally I don't break to the cutesy stuff, but there are times when I just have to give in. :lol

Anyway, I just beat Chapter 10 and I almost have 30 hours clocked in. I swear, I'm probably the only person on earth who won't be beating this game until I've gotten at least 40 hours worth of gameplay in. It isn't deliberate, either. I'm just taking my time.

I wish this game would last forever, though. :(

So far, this is my definite game of the year. More people need to buy this fucking game. If I don't get a sequel, simply because there weren't enough sales, I'm going to be livid.

I'm not quite as extreme, but I still have over 30 hours clocked in at the start of chapter 15. I'm also not particularly trying to prolong it, but I take my time and do all the side stuff.

o_0 What?! I finished the first mission of chapter 10 and I'm over17 hours. If I take the second mission into consideration, I might finish it in 18 hours. What have you been doing? Because I did the skirmish missions at least once and read all the glossary too.

I agree about the second part. It's my GOTY too and so far my favourite next gen game overall. We need more of these kind of games.

Curiously, I just received email from amazon.ca, saying that Valkyria Chronicles has been delayed, and that they now estimate that it won't ship until... December 15.

*sigh*

Edit: But local Future Shops claim to have stock. Time to get in the car and cancel my preorder with Amazon, I think.

Yeah, I had to switch to the dub because it bothers me. I was paying more attention to the translation than the story.

Finished the US version the first time, clocked 40 hours, haven't played the game from scratch for quite a while, haven't A ranked a couple of missions, though. Ha ha !

My first play through was solely with English VA, not bad.

Got my 4th delay e-mail and my UK version might get shipped on Nov/17, hah ! Whatever.

edit: And there is one thing the US version has but the Japanese don't, in-game XMB support, but not very useful for this game anyway.
