You're not wrong. Biggest issue with VR right now is just getting good content. There are a very small handful of AAA VR titles. Mods open up the playing field substantially, but they can be hit and miss.

Though, same can be said for AAA gaming as a whole, even sony is only committing to releasing one a year

The sales of VR headsets are still in the millions, probably on par with something like steam deck. Valve sells at a profit - so they dont have to hit a huge market to make a product worthwhile.

Because this headset isn't only about VR, but also flat gaming with special enhancements

Pretty much you will be able to use it as a steam deck on your face with a movie theater screen with special effects and very good audio with its speakers for flat games, but also for VR games

It will be a 10X better experience than playing on Steam deck

Because Valve prints money and can afford to have some fun with a niche product.

They might not make money on the hardware at all but will, as always, do well from attached software. The side benefits of building steam integration with ARM etc will make it mostly worth it.

In the meantime they are privately held, can experiment how they please and will continue to be the market dominator in the PC space. Nice situation to be in overall I'd say.

Yep no one ever expects headsets to sell as much as a console, steam already makes them the money they need, they don't need to sell hardware to make money or to make steam successful, so they make it for fun for experimenting and use what they learn from it to add to other things

Same for steam deck selling 4 million, no console maker like Nintendo or Sony could survive on only selling 4 million units, valve can though

Hopefully someone will make a more desirable headset and it becomes less of a niche. Maybe valve is that company. I'll take any VR experiences I can until that day comes.

VR really needs software to sell the system rather than better and better systems (though smaller systems would be welcome as it's hard convincing people to strap an entire apparatus to their face). What that would be I have no clue. I remember people buying entire PCs just to play Everquest in the 90s. VR needs that kind of moment. I think once the tech hits glasses sized it will be more popular with the masses too.

I think the rumor is that the 2D games on a big screen will actually have 3D depth like those expensive 3D monitors do.

Taking a page on how acer did it for their monitor with spatial labs or how Samsung is also about to do it with their new monitor

Yeah, it seems pretty clear this isn't just "another vr headset for vr games". All mentions steam vr overlays are being renamed to frames. This will probably be a "Apple Vision Pro for gamers" type pitch.

Honestly, that would be fucking amazing. I haven't been following the tech so I had no idea this was even in the rumors, but I'd bite at the right price.

Yea being able to play actual vr software on it could just be a bonus for some people not the main point

I kinda feel the biggest issue with VR right now is the form factor is of a bulky headset that creates motion sickness in people or is just too much to use in hotter climates.
 
Can they get me a VR goggle that doens't cost $1,000 and have a huge wire harness?

Actually, I'd pay $1,000 if it didn't have any other required gizmos to get room scale.

Just put the GPU into the slot/multiple slots next to CPU and memory with a giant heat sink on top.
No more of this Slot nonsense needing special power connectors. Get the power right from the board like it should have been all along.
Want to upgrade your GPU? Remove the heatsink, Fill the empty socket with a 2nd GPU.
Hey look at that, I don't need to wait for a higher memory card anymore.

Or am I talking crazy here?

I agree on the software, VR needs that EverQuest moment. The price is also an important factor and it may never reach a price range to hit mass market and also deliver a great experience, the quest is a good price but the tech does fall a little short. There are some great games on psvr2 but the cost of entry is too high and it doesn't have the convenience of a meta headset. I personally have no problem with psvr2 with regard to comfort and the often derided cable. Would I like it wireless and a little more comfortable, sure I would, but it doesn't detract from my enjoyment and wireless would drive the cost up even more. That being said I can understand why other people feel differently.

What I would like from valve is a standalone to take on meta, that is also really comfortable and can deliver visuals in line with what we get in psvr2. I think a hip mounted small form factor console linked to a lightweight pair of glasses would work, but how far away are we from that being delivered at a reasonable cost?

Some of the meta concepts look really cool as far as AR is concerned, but I think we're at least 5-10 years away from delivering even a current Quest capabilities in a glasses sized setup. I think I'd rather deal with a small cable and a hip sized computer to get there faster if I had my way.

Well then, A mod scene that keeps up with VR conversions like how Unreal Engine is capable of converting many games to VR but it takes a bit of work getting Weapons in the game as well as eye height/placement.
Maybe Steam could do that sort of thing for me just like how they currently put together Shader Compilations.

Not sure if you saw the Reddit poster who made a thread about the "Steam Frame" before the trademark was found. They described something almost exactly like this if you dig into their post history.

It would be cool if it's a wireless VR headset that competes with the Quest line. Hopefully has some way to input video from other devices, like portable gaming systems or phones, either wirelessly or through USB C.

I really hope it isn't another VR headset.

I was an early Kickstarter of Oculus from back in the CV1 days, and I've owned several VR headsets, including the Valve Index, and after a few weeks, all of them are just put back in their packaging to collect dust.
With the exception of the Meta Quest 3 all of them are cumbersome, and all of them (including the Quest 3) are a pain to use for long periods of time, and the games just aren't compelling. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I were into sim racing or flight sims.

What I'd really like is a full release of SteamOS that will work on Desktops (similar to Bazzite) with full NVIDIA support. A new Steam Controller would be cool too. Even cloud-streaming of your Steam Game collection to your Steam Deck (allowing it to play games that can't run on the deck) would be cool.

Really, I'd be cool with anything but another VR headset.

but I'd also assume Samsung would sue the fuck out of them if that was the case

Yes keep improving headsets/vr, it's the only thing different in gaming today after releasing the same type of games for 20 years

Even if the Steam Frame isn't a VR headset, they ARE working on a VR headset and controllers (What until now has been known as Valve Deckard) so you'll see a new headset from Valve regardless.

Best guess is that this will be a framework used for third party venders to develop their own Steam console's and handheld units.

I could see no videos happening if its an invite to valve HQ or something, but not even being able to talk about what its like seems unlikely
