Blazing fast LTE speeds!*

*Until you've downloaded your 2GB for the month /failhorn

Edit: Oh wait I just checked and it's 4GB! HOLY SHIT double the downloads and all for the same amazing price! Fuck real internet, give me shit that I can play Angry Birds on.

whats the contention likely to be for LTE vs fios or ADSL? When we had 3G rollouts the theoretical speeds were never hit as the bandwidth got chopped up between so many users. Maybe this time they're rolling LTE out with the intent to use it to replace home broadband, so they'll have factored in enough capacity?

$60/mo for 10GB, $120/mo for 30GB, $10 every additional GB. $200 installation. Speeds are 5-12Mbps down, 2-5Mbps up.

Damn, that really sucks for new customers.

in this thread, people bitch at companies for not spending enough money to give them free internet access.

you guys make it seem like Verizon can do the rollout for free. if there's a reason they stop, it's that it's no longer commercially viable

The big issue with the internet in the US is the simply economics of population density.

The big issue is that you are being shafted by your telecoms with a government that won't do anything about it. Investing heavily in the internet infrastructure would have been a kick ass stimulus package last year, one that both the government and all of her citizens could have profited immensly from.

But that would "steal" those profits from the telecoms leaving you with shit internet with bw caps at a premium cost.

Australia's investing 38 billion in fibre optics to reach 93% of the population by 2021.*^#

*not including massive cost blow outs
^not including massive delays
# not including the facts that the conservatives will radically scale this back.

wait. what? What do you want the gov to do to get the telecom company to roll out the fiber optics? hold a gun to your head?

or do you want our inefficient government to roll it out themselves? (when they have no knowledge, or equipments, or people for doing so)

Fios is viable, its just not as lucrative as charging people 30 dollars a month for 5 gigs.

Yes, government owned cables letting private ISP's pay to use them is a good idea, and is probably the main reason Swedish internet kicks ass compared to US internet, despite a much lower population density. The government only holds like a 30% stake these days though, but the foundation was laid some 15 years ago.

We did not go that way when it was time to invest in mobile broadband and that's probably the a big reason they are comparatively shitty, capped and expensive in Sweden.

It's not capitalism. Capitalism implies that there is COMPETITION

The end result of capitalism is competition to the point of economic extinction. We had a regulated industry which had monitored competition and then we deregulated and Verizon and AT&T consumed the smaller companies. They now sit and enjoy the profits of being competitive and guess who suffers?

You want no government oversight of necessary infrastructure? Do governments hold guns at companies heads when they want to build a new bridge?

lol those poor poor telecoms just can't make it anymore on their 100% profit margins. How can they be expected to provide the services the government paid them for?!? How can they compete on such meager sums gained through local monopolies!?

You know, the Government rolling out a national open-access, wholesale network can be a good thing.

I don't hold much hope for the June 2021 end date considering the scale of the project, but I'd wager the Telstra deal (the biggest items being that NBN Co can utilise existing ducts/conduits and exchanges) will do a lot to keep the delays relatively minimal and the cost in check. Come to think of it, the revised Corporate Plan -- not updated since 2010 -- is due soon (next month, I think?), which should be interesting. As for your third point, it seems you're already convinced of Labor losing the next election. :p

With the spectrum crunch Verizon may be forced to go back to fios as it doens't seem the FCC is going to let them get anymore space.

Wired to the homes is really important and its a shame the goverment has let this bs go on for as long as it has. They need to start requiring fiber run strait to the home and a revamp of all providers services. Time warner and cable vision are a joke and Fios isn't avalible every where in jersey yet.

500/100 speeds should be the minimum.

Because of the reasons data caps exist now? The networks aren't robust enough to handle a lot of traffic. I'm not cynical about this so I imagine them gradually getting lifted as time goes on and the networks get better. I'm not talking about 6 months or a year from now, but I think by the end of the decade this won't be an issue.

LOL! Ahh, but be young and naive.
