VGX 'Most Anticipated 2014 Game' nominees

list is incomplete:

I want to play this game.

I don't think I'll be able to.

I loved how the South Park complaining basically amounts to "waah wahh my console wars ammo and ultimately mediocre game wasn't on the list".

Nah man, I see it this way. This award should be for games that have a realistic chance of being in GOTY discussions next year. Maybe it is just me but I doubt South Park will be in those talks much.

That leaked gameplay demo was all I needed to see to be convinced it's just going to be Infamous 3 after all, and I despise that series' combat and how it's basically just a 3rd person shooter covered up with superhero elements. I was hoping with a new console with a massive amount of power over PS3 they'd try new things with the gameplay instead of just making a good looking game but that's my fault when I've been so heavily invested in this industry for decades and still expect companies to try new things over playing it safe and sticking to their poor gameplay.

To each their own I guess, I've always felt the games were more than just a simple TPS with 2 being a strong iteration over 1 and I expect that same jump up coming into 3. I'm also not quite sure why you expected them to shake up the forumla just because it's on PS4 instead of PS3. The games are pretty well liked and have their own strong identity. As long as they improve what they already have then they are doing just fine.

Wut?

Here's a better list, just from the top of my head:

MGS V
Thief
Castlevania 2
The Evil Within
Dark Souls II

What about Persona 5, FFX/X-2 HD, Infamous SS, MGSV: Ground Zeroes, and The Last Guardian?

One of those games isn't releasing in english next year. One is a remake of an ok final fantasy and a very shoddy final fantasy, and one probably still won't be seeing the light of day anytime soon.

Edit: Post above me makes me hope that thief turns out ok :/

It's their opinions. I don't think it's going to change shooters but it is a interesting looking game.

It's just that I'll be really disappointed if the game that defines this generation in the eyes of the public is one that is so similar to the biggest seller of the last gen. :\

South Park? Nope. Watch Dogs is an alright choice. The Witcher 3? Good entry. Destiny? Another good entry. Titanfall? Good too.
I think Destiny will end up winning.

Super Smash Bros. And Infamous should've been in there.

Personally I can't wait for Infamous.

My top 5 in no specific order:
Infamous
Destiny
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Kart
The Order (isn't RAD targeting a late 2014 release?)

How the hell did you come to that conclusion? The player just spammed the projectile in that gameplay demo so you're saying that's all the game is? Are you the kind of person who would claim that a fighting game has no depth because someone is mindlessly tossing out projectiles or grabs?

I don't think it will unless they have something else up their sleeve. It will be something else that we don't know about yet.

Game with long dev time written by Academy award winners (who love Earthbound) along with the makers of some of the best RPGs whose quality has remained consistently great through the years while managing to keeps thing fresh?

That sounds like Goty material to me and deserves that place as much as the others. More than repurposed Assassin's Creed at the very least.

I want to play this game.

I don't think I'll be able to.

I'm in the same predicament - I have a hard time dealing with games that are too adept at being scary. As much as I was enjoying Project Zero, I had to give up on it halfway through because it just got too much for me. The Evil Within looks similarly intense, despite its more action-orientated gameplay.

After seeing Assassin's Creed 4, Watch_Dogs is without a doubt the game I am most looking forward to next year.

Not my most anticipated but I do agree after playing black flag I have much higher hopes for it. For me, though, infamous, Destiny and the Division are leaders of the pack.

where are PS4 and XBO games on their awards voted on by critics. Can't say it's too recent KI and F5 are nominated for their genres.

But nothing for best XBOX or PS games weird.

As I said earlier, the gameplay itself is just paper mario in a different skin. Just because obsidian is at the helm doesn't mean the formula is going to be much better (and from the gameplay we've seen they didn't tweak the formula much). As for the story, sure the south park writers are great, I love south park, but we need to be honest with ourselves, there is an obvious trap here for this to turn into an episode that goes on for way to long and their call backs to the best parts of the series will be fun but without fresh jokes, the hum-drum can draw in rather quickly. As for the bolded above, let's not be silly here, long dev times are usually a sign of bad things to come instead of good things to come these days.

That being said, I hope the game does extremely well but I would be willing to bet anything that this won't be GOTY material.

Might as well rename it VGX 'Best Marketed 2014 Game'. It's odd that they would have such an "award" given that the whole point of the show is to announce new games, some of which might swiftly take the place of "most anticipated game" from the prize winner.

This year sounds to be a bit different from previous years. I think this will be a brief 2013 game awards presented to the studios with "a look ahead" at 2014s largest titles including unannounced games. They said they will have enlxtended demos and we know Reggie will be doing something so hopefully its a good 2014 preview. Hopefully since its a internet streamed show on Saturday means limited advertising bullshit.

Second Son is currently my most anticipated game of 2014, mainly because I try not to get too anticipated for games too far in the future, I only care about those released in Q1 and Q2.

The Witcher 3 might be my most anticipated game of all time.......

Starving for those giant open world rpgs. Incredibly tired of shooters. Its not you shooters.....its me.

None of those interest me. I might play South Park, Witcher or Watch Dogs once they have been released and look promising. Titanfall and Destiny are no-gos, I don't like FPSes.

Second Son is the game I am looking forward to. That will be the trigger for me to jump onto the PS4.

Other than that 2014 currently looks a little bit boring.

None of the games I'm anticipating were listed. Instead, I voted for what I found the most interesting on that list.... Destiny.

I've read through this entire thread and find it funny how people are eager to either defend and bash South Park for being on the list.

However, there is one very major problem with it being on the list.

If a game is going to be "the most anticipated game of (insert year)" that means its being anticipated by the most amount of gamers. The main reason it SHOULD NOT be on the list is that it's target audience is just too small.

Destiny
- Shooter and loot hound crowds will eat this up.
Witcher - Action adventure fans and RPG lovers
Titanfall - COD CROWD - shooter fans
Watch Dogs - Action Adventure and 3rd person action fans
South Park - Fans of South Park who also like video games and RPG's. Some general RPG fans.

Do you see the problem now? Its not that it will be a BAD game. Most anticipated means the MOST PEOPLE are anticipating it. South Park the show's video game playing, RPG loving crowd is just not big enough to warrant it being on a most anticipated list.

is this a meme now?

No, unfortunately, there are people that actually believe there is no legitimate reason to be excited for Titanfall, other than that Microsoft is pushing it as the system seller of their new console.

Fuckin' sad. It's easily my most anticipated game of 2014 and I'll be playing it on the PC that I already have.

This was my initial problem with it. It just seems like too narrow of a market to have a huge anticipation.
