VICE: This Wind Chime Is Tearing a Brooklyn Neighborhood Apart

Isn't the one who put up the wind chime the one who's forcing people to change?
Because people are too self absorbed, especially people who move into places like Greenpoint lately. A detached sense of entitlement. The wind chime owner had good intentions but did not think it through. More to the point this isn't a tree on her property as far as I can tell.

I don't get what the problem with the note is? They've asked the person to take it down as it is noisy. If they were being shitty about it, they would have just taken the chime down themselves

It's also very politely written. Surely these adults can come up with a solution together

Why is the neighbor being ridiculous? They respectfully requested the owner move it. Outside of talking to the owner in person, that note couldn't have been more respectful and less demanding.

And judging by the owners response, I doubt talking to them in person would help.

Because it's a wind chime? People hang them from windows and stuff all the time.

Again, though, I'm on the neighbor's side. It isn't Christine's tree. And btw, yes, the owner's response was ridiculous.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I appreciate the whole 'shrine to mother' thing but this ..

"The wind chime is in memory for my mom," she wrote. "Get over it, you live in NYC!"

is bullshit.. wind chimes can be annoying as hell and I can completely see how they can be a huge nuisance especially at night when someone's trying to sleep.

That being said, the annoyed neighbor should just go and fucking talk to the wind chime owner directly instead of leaving these notes.

its weird because while it is true that you should talk with people face to face when there is a problem, i almost feel like aggression emanates from the chime person asking the note-leaver to meet face to face

just because i personally, if i can get away with not talking to someone face to face i absolutely will every time. and making me do so feels like it is calling me out or something. isnt social awkwardness funny, it sure is hard to function sometimes

"I like this sound so I'm going to make everyone hear it" is essentially the stance of people that put out windchimes in a dense housing situation, as well as people playing loud music.

You have a responsibility to live in your space in a way that's respectful to others that also live there- even new tenants. Just because you've been doing it for a while doesn't mean new people just have to deal with it either.

I'm also surprised, as others mentioned, that the chimes are still there considering they're unprotected and on a public tree. If it were Houston Texas that thing would have been tossed in a dumpster after the owners first reply.

I honestly thought this was going to be about my block because we have a wind chime as well. Except I don't think anyone has ever complained about it. The woman's got a point: it's NYC and there can be sounds at any given moment. If it's not a wind chime then it's going to be the garbagemen kicking around garbage cans at 3am in the morning, sirens trying to reach the next emergency, etc. Like.. if you have issues sleeping because of a fucking WIND CHIME then I have to wonder how you've managed to live anywhere in NYC up until this point.

Haha this is around the corner from my apartment. The drama seems pretty confined to the 50 ft radius around those chimes.

I dont get how 20-somethings can afford brooklyn.

That's honestly the weird part of the story to me.

Well someone with the last name of Walczak was probably born in the house they currently live in and enjoy considerably cheaper rent than most.

Also, jobs provide paychecks which enable you to pay rent. :)

Pretty much or left a nasiter tone in the letter. I did find the letter respectful. The reply back was the problem and didn't help the situation.

When I first bought my condo in Los Angeles, my very first interaction with a neighbor was them asking if I were going to take down the wind chimes that the previously owners had up. I was still in the process of moving in.

I took the big one down, left a smaller one in place.

There couldn't be a more docile/pleasant sound than what a wind chime makes, and it's keeping people up? Get some earmuffs if it's that unbearable.

It's random shitty racket.

I installed DirecTV at a house with a crazy old lady and like 50 fucking wind chimes. I thought I was going insane.

Now this is a brand of passive aggressiveness I can get behind.

The note the wind chime owner wrote back was much ruder than the original note.

If it's not a tree on her property then she should take it off.

Not sure why you think NYC has noise blaring outside Manhattan and even then in the major areas at any given second. More to the point, just because there is noise doesn't mean people are cool to deal with more of it.

Things like this get annoying. It is always there, you start focusing on it and anticipating the sounds leading to trouble getting to sleep, leading to more frustration and even more stress about it. I can totally understand the neighbor about this.

lol Greenpoint. I like the part of the article that says "because Brooklynites care about weird stuff" - no, more like "recently transplanted to Brooklyn hipster types care about weird stuff."

I love seeing the change in Brooklyn, as I've been here my entire life. 20-25 years ago, that chime would have been ripped down at the very least, and after that "get over it!" letter, a rock likely would have been thrown through the lady's window at a minimum (not condoning it at all, but it's true). Now, passive aggressive letters are left on trees, with full back-and-forth dialogue occurring. LOL

Are the people who are seemingly OK with public wind chimes also the same people who are OK with people playing music on their phone in public?

That's not quite the same, as I'm pretty sure the latter is literally a war crime, as defined by the Geneva Convention.

They're both noise that you're forcing upon people around you in public.

I think it's something I personally could get used to and just zone out, but I totally get why it would bother people.

Hah:
Then the tree itself found it had a supporter on the street. On Monday, Heather Letzkus tore all the signs from its bole, worried the pins keeping them up might be causing it harm. In place of what she called "a wall of passive aggression," she taped a copy of a city ordinance calling attention to the fact that it's illegal to stick anything on a city tree.

How has someone not knocked that shit down yet? I don't even mean one of the people angry about it, necessarily. But, like, my ass hole kid self would have taken a baseball bat to something like that just hanging out in public.

If its bothering people, then take it down. There are ways to honor your deceased relatives that don't involve a constant noise-maker.

Yeah I would be annoyed too. Wind chimes are not what I call pleasant to hear.
Though I am surprised that it hasn't been stolen yet.

My grandparents had a wine chime on their farm in the country. I couldn't stand it if it was someone else's but 15 feet from my window.

Because of the increased likelihood of occasional random noise, I should be allowed to install a device which promulgates frequent, repeated noise? You live next to the freeway, so surely you'll have no problem with me installing a foghorn that sounds every 30 minutes. Noise is noise!

I mean, maybe the solution to living in a noisy place is not to intentionally add more of it, especially if you know that it is making your neighbors uncomfortable. If part of living in a society is compromising on some things, I would think the person making the noise should be more responsible for compromise than the person who doesn't want to hear it in the middle of the night. That's just good manners.

If something is annoying you it's obnoxious to kindly request they move the source of annoyance? Okay, dude.

Tell the city councillor and ask them to have the city remove it. No way a councillor wants to open the can of worms that lets people hang stuff on trees.

A rope or string rubbing on a tree can strip its bark, too.
